Earthlink is in the process of testing new usenet hardware and software. To simplify the process, they decided to do this testing outside of the two production farms. Once the testing is complete, they will install new hardware and software into the two production farms that will replace the current hardware. Once that process is underway, newstest2 will be removed.

The test server is usually much faster then the production servers. In may also provide more groups then are available on some of the production servers. It may also provide better completion then some of the production servers. It may also offer better retention than some of the production servers.

The test server has different password requirements then the rest of earthlink. Most passwords will work, but some short ones will not. If you get this error, try changing your password.
Otherwise, write down the error, or get a screenshot, and post it in the forums for assistance.

Most likely you have reached the monthly cap on the test server of 20GB. This cap is a rolling cap over the last 30 days. The cap includes all data transferred and that means it includes headers.

The simple answer os to not use newstest2 for a few days. That should cause your total downloaded to drop under the 20GB in 30 days limit. The reason that the cap can stay in effect forever is that at 8KB with the cap, it is possible to download more then 750MB per day. (Can someone provide the exact number?) (Is the cap total bytes or per connection?)

Since this is a test server, the support people really don't know much about the server. The only support available is in the newsgroup earthlink.support.usenet.newstest2 which is on the production and test servers.

It is a test server so changes and fixes are being made to the hardware and software on a rate that is more frequent then then production servers. Also, there is no backup hardware so the only machines available are the ones being changed.
When this moves into production, there will be multiple machines. At that time, most changes will be done by taking down only one machine at a time. Since all services will be available from other servers, users should not see an impact other then possibly speed. There are likely to be some changes that may require all of the machines to be turned off to make some changes. However, the service should be almost always available.
