You can download Lavasoft Ad-aware, and run the program to get rid of all spyware.

Next, download the dummy cd_clint.dll file and extract the DLL file to your System folder.

If you click on 'tools', then 'options' in your Kazaa browser, you'll see a tab named 'filters'. I would STRONGLY advise you make sure all 3 boxes under 'miscellaneous' are checked, and in the 'blocklist' window, along with 'full-downloader, full-installer', add these, at least [.exe, .vbs, .js, .hta] - everything between the brackets, just as you see it here. And ALWAYS scan files before playing, just to be safe.

The default folder for downloads may not be the best choice - and NEVER use C:/My Music ... that's a root directory and should probably be avoided for increased security. I would suggest making your own folder, maybe something like this : go to My Computer, C (or whatever your drive letter is), Program files - then on top left, click on file, select 'new folder', and name it 'Songs', or 'Tunes', or 'Waldo' (whatever) ... use that as your default directory, and point kazaa to that folder for up/downloads (in kazaa, go to 'Tools', 'Options', 'Traffic', and drop-down to your new folder. Many users unintentionally share a LOT more than they plan by using the default locations, and it never hurts to be a bit more careful. You can then point your player to this folder, or drag files from it, as before.

In the Search pane:

click the drop-down box. Select "Purge Searches", then click "Yes" in the dialogue box, and it's done:

Sig2Dat is a small program that will help you find the files you want easier and help you share files that you have verified as good.
Creator of Sig2Dat: http://www.geocities.com/vlaibb/

The sig2dat program was created by IndianaJonesAIBB. Also, it creates startfiles, but the true benefit of the program is that it gives a unique signature hash (like a fingerprint) that no other file has. This way all you have to do is report the hash information on forums and other users can create startfiles.

Users don't even have to do a search. When you open your FastTrack client (KaZaA/Grokster/kazaalite, etc.) the startfile will automatically show up in their traffic section. They should also automatically start searching and downloading but sometimes you might have to help them along by clicking on "find more sources".

A new feature that was added to the sig2dat program was something called quicklinks. This allowed users to create links like the ones you see on webpages and some forums. Once a quicklink was created users only had to click on it to automatically create a startfile. Before this feature users had to manually copy and paste the hash information into sig2dat.

1) Download Sig2Dat from: here or: here
(it's also bundled with the latest version of kazaalite v2.0)
2) Click on the link of the file or files you want. They look like this:
Charmed 3x18 Sin Francisco.wmv
3) You will see a window open that says Sig2Dat in the top left corner then it will automatically close.
4) If you have Kazaa Lite open, or which ever program you are using, close that program.
5) Open Kazaa Lite, or which ever program you are using.
6) You should now see the file or files you clicked on in your download list. Sometimes it will start downloading right away, sometimes it takes a day or two.

First of all it depends whether it's an *.avi or *.mpg file...

If it's an *avi use the AVI Preview tool, a program which is capable of playing partially downloaded AVI movies.
It's now bundled with KaZaA Lite (v2.0 Build 2)
or available from: www.avipreview.com

You just drag-n-drop your dat file into "AVIPreview" and watch the movie! And you do not have to close KaZaA.
Key Benefits:
Preview AVI files without interruption of the download process
Uses standard DirectX framework - no additional software needed
Very simple interface
Does not change the original video file in any way
It is Free!

It is very compact and not overloaded with bunch of functions. It does not claim to be the best (most advanced) player around. It does that it claims, give you an ability to preview the content of the avi file.

For *mpg's copy the file that is downloading and paste the partial file you copied somewhere else... so, if you have a .dat file that will become an .mpg you can often times preview some of it by renaming the pasted file to .dat.mpg (or whatever with the *.mpg extension).

In the event that doesn't work, you can also try opening the pasted file with virtualdub and click the play button.

Virtualdub available from:
www.virtualdub.org OR www.vcdhelp.com

FastTrack Accelerator (also known as Speed Up) starts up
KaZaA (if not started yet) and connects to it. Then it will continiously try to "find more sources" for your download list, thus increasing your download speeds and helping you "beat" the queue.

When you right-click on an item in the download screen of KaZaA,
you can 'search for more sources'. KaZaA will then search for more users
from which it can download that file. This usually speeds up your downloads.

The FTA tool automates that for you by running alongside your FastTrack client and every few minutes it automatically searches for more sources.

FTA can be of the most benefit for those times when you are away from your computer, so KaZaA/kazaalite etc., will always be on the lookout for alternative sources.

The current version is 1.3.1 (10/21/02).
A prior version is also bundled with kazaalite v2.0
or can be downloaded separately at:
speedup.tk

Is the answer to all the following questions is yes, you can install it.
Did you download it off KaZaA?
Did it have the yellow "Altnet" symbol? ()
Does it say the artist is Sharman Networks?
If so, you can be 99% sure it is safe.
If not, use it at your own risk.

DO NOT INSTALL A SKIN CALLED MAGIC EIGHTBALL
It is a Trojan Horse.
See this and this for more details about the trojan horse.

The Icon mean that the file is on the KaZaA network through Altnet. Most files on Altnet are demos or trials. The files on Altnet are legal.
