7. WinMX

·What is OpenNap?
·Where do I get a list of OpenNap servers?
·What is the difference between a primary connection and a secondary connection?
·Where can I get more information about WinMX?
·How do I stop MX from switching to the transfer window when I start a download?
·What can I search for?
OpenNap is a second protocol that can be used in conjunction with WinMX. OpenNap is a totally seperate network from WinMX with different rules, but works very similar. All OpenNap servers are run by private people on their own machines.

By adding a list of OpenNap servers to WinMX, you can greatly increase the number of hits when you do searches. There are usually close to 200 servers online at any given time, with thousands of people logged on to each server.

The easiest way to get a list of OpenNap servers is by using a program called NapMX. NapMX will automatically download a current list of serves, and with the touch of a button, import them directly into your WinMX OpenNap list.

A Primary Connection is the most important part of the WinMX network. Without them, there would be no network. The Primary computers handle all searches, whois requests, browsing of other user's files, IMs and chat rooms. They also establish all the links that form within the network. They host all the people who are, for whatever reason, unable to make a primary connection. You must have a relatively high amount of bandwidth to be a primary connection - like at least DSL or cable, preferably a T1 or greater. You must also have a fast computer - by WinMX standards, the minimum processor speed must be at least 266 MHz.

Secondary connections are all those that cannot be a Primary connection. A few examples are: slow connection, ie dial-up modems, ISDN; slow processor; incorrectly configured firewalls or complex LAN set-ups.

Here are some handy links for WinMX 3.3. First time users should try these two:

- WinMX Central - bookmark this page, it's updated regularly, has most all
the links on the homepage, as well as FAQs about problems getting up and
running (settings, firewalls, routers, ISP blocks, tips ...) with screen
shots. IRC info is here too:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/j.buchanan/ or http://on.to/dbr

A number of useful posts can be found here (sometimes more useful than the
newsgroups because the posts don't vanish):
http://www.winmxcommunity.com

Other sites that may be useful:
http://www.geocities.com/locojones2000/winmxfaq.html - describes how WinMX
works, what is going on when you use it, offers tips on related topics (like
how to get a good rip, how to make your movies play). Written for 2.6 but
still very useful.

http://audiofilez.tripod.com/ - one expert user's views on tools, etc

VERSION
The current version is 3.3. All older versions are capable of using OpenNap
servers but ONLY 3.3 WILL CONNECT TO THE WinMX Peer Network (WPN).

WINMX ROCKS
WinMX works for most folks, most all the time, once they get it set up. If
it's not working for you, don't assume:
- it's been hacked by RIAA lackeys
- the network is down
- the program is crap and just doesn't work
Rather assume it's your setup (1st timers) or something you changed (prior
users), and try to root out the problem. You can get help here.

ASKING QUESTIONS HERE
If you are asking a question, be sure to tell about your situation:
- Are you sharing music or video or something else?
- What kind of connection do you have?
- What you are trying to do, and why, etc. (for example, are you
ripping your collection of 900 rare vinyl LPs or a popular CD)?
Where will you be listening to the music?
- If it's a tech question, your CPU, RAM, firewall/router setup,
OS and WinMX version

And if you get an answer, be sure to come back here and tell everyone what
happened.

Click the settings button. Then click on File Transfers in the left pane. Uncheck the check box next to Switch to transfers window when starting a download. Then click close.
