(back)Every now and then there will be disagreements in this forum. People will have conflicting opinions, or perhaps even a post will come across as having a different meaning than intended. Either way at some point a Moderator will have to step in and either edit offending bits out of a post, or delete the post if there isn't anything worth saving.

When this happens, relax. Step back and take a deep breath. Was there something in there that could have come across as rude? Offensive? Did you call anybody a derogatory name like stupid...or doodiehead? Did you simply post "ha ha, your a big old dummy head, everyone knows not to use a 1/2" spud wrench to torque past 50psi when changing muffler bearings you dolt"? Try to think about how somebody might feel about what your wrote.

Moderators are nothing more than glorified janitors in the forum. Trying to keep the topics on topic, and the members polite and civil. Debate is great, discussion drives the very success of the forum, and lesson's shared help others from making similar mistakes. However, being arrogant and cocky is not only frowned upon...it simply won't be tolerated. If your post has been edited, or deleted, do not post asking why. It was not done lightly, or without reason.

Now this does not leave you without recourse, if you truly feel that a moderator is targeting you unfairly or is stalking your every post then you do have options. You can speak to either Fatness (Moderator Team Lead) or Justin (owner of all things dslreporty) about the situation. Moderators are technically human after all (except for those of us who are really just small shell scripts) and mistakes and misunderstands can occur. At the end of the day, we really just want you guys to have a place to communicate freely about things that interest you.

Torque is measured in force applied (such as pounds) at some linear distance (such as feet, ergo "foot-pounds," "inch-pounds," or "Newton-meters"), not force per unit area ("psi"). Or I don't know; maybe the example was written that way to make the theoretical poster sound even more stupid. Possessives, not plurals, are formed with an apostrophe and an S ("lesson's"). I could not identify a noun which the lesson possesses, so I'm going to guess you meant a plural and should remove the apostrophe. It is confusing on first reading because "help" is both a noun and a verb, so initially it scans as "lesson's shared help" as a complete phrase. just sayin....

(back)Yes, always better to include visual representation with any post of a question. Keep in mind that the people you are asking questions of (or sharing information with) are not physically there; as such they have no knowledge of the specific situation.
    In short, pictures = good.

(back)In short, if you don't have anything nice to say....then shut up. I will not tolerate blatantly rude posts, trolling, empty comments on how what somebody is doing is wrong and how stupid they are. The only criticism allowed here is constructive criticism.

    3 Construction Permits

(back)The definition of a building/construction permit varies by state, but generally is required for any major remodeling or modifications of a home. You should always check with your local government to see if a building permit is required by law for the work you are planning on doing.
Building permits are the responsibility of the home owner, so even if you have contracted to have the work done by a third party, you are still liable.

(back)First, the U.S. National Electrical Code may or may not be appropriate!!!

It's actually just a standards manual published by the (U.S.) National Fire Protection Association. LOCAL and/or State law may require adherence to either the NEC or some other electrical code.

For example, in Chicago, the NEC is superceded by the Chicago Electrical code. see
    »egov.cityofchicago.org/
and navigate to / your Government / City Departments / Construction and Permits / References and Ordinances / Electrical code

Here is the Wikipedia entry: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_E···%28US%29
and a linky to the 2008 electrical code:
Additionally, here is the 2007 NFPA Fire Code
    »www.nfpa.org/freecodes/free_acce···?id=7207

http://www.nfpa.org/freecodes/free_access_agreement.asp?id=7008SB&cookie%5Ftest= is a dead link now. I suggest listing bulk.resource.org instead. The theory of their archive there is that since the NEC has been incorporated by reference into, among other places, states' law, it is legal to republish the NFPA's copyrighted works.

(back)Visit these sites to gather information on local codes, as always though you should confirm the information with local authorities:

www.nema.org/stds/fieldreps/NECa···ment.cfm to see a graphical map of what NEC code that your State follows at this current time period. For a list by State for each City/Village, download the Excel file that is attached.
