It's tempting to go off on a long rant about the filthy, slimy, and malicious scum who gleefully destroy our information, crawling like maggots into our computers, violating our personal space, and costing the world billions of dollars every year.

But that would be indecorous--after all, this is a FAQ.

There's no easy answer to controlling viruses and other vermin waste products. Everything changes much too quickly. A few obvious words of advice:

  • Use a firewall.
  • Use a virus checker.
  • Keep your browser and operating system up-to-date.
  • Use more than one checking system. No single piece of software catches everything.

It's good to occasionally use one of the online checkers as a backup to your installed one. They are kept current. Here are a few:

Command on Demand
Trojan Scan
McAfee
Panda
RAV
Sygate
Bit Defender
Trend Micro
Symantec
