For this there is really no answer. However most users with a BEFSR41 ver. 1 router have experienced the most problems. The firmware that was released was a beta version, it was provided on the Linksys website in late April. If you upgraded, this beta can be identified from the router's main screen by looking at the firmware version. If the version reads 1.45 002, Apr 21 2003, it is the beta version. If you have upgraded and wish to downgrade to 1.44.2 use the links below.

If you go to your Filter page you will see the following options:
Block WAN Request = Makes your router pingable
Multicast Pass Through = Allows for multimedia streaming, video and audio.
IPSEC Pass Through = IP security protocol for VPNs.
PPTP Pass Through = Point to Point Tunneling Protocol for VPN.
Remote Management = Allows you to access the router remotely.
Remote Upgrade = Allows firmware upgrade remotely.

Version 1 BEFSR41 has two IC boards reversed WAN port and a different power supply. Both units perform the same way there is no difference between them only the cosmetic changes.

In most cases no. The BEFSR41 ver.2 router has an internal power switching device (AC to DC). This generates a little bit of heat and makes a high pitched squealing noise. The router may even have a slight odor to it. All of these are nothing to worry about. If the routers noise, heat or odor seems unusual, for example you can hear the router from several feet away, the router feels hot to the touch and not just warm and the odor is unusually strong return the router to Linksys for a replacement via this site.
