3 Wired Routers

·How do I turn on SNMP traps for logging?
·My router is overheating. Anything I can do?
Prior to firmware version 1.38 the Linksys routers in the 11/31/41 family provided detailed operation information via SNMP traps. This functionality was "removed" from 1.38 and beyond. Well, it's still in there, just hidden! See this (scroll to bottom of page). The basics are, log into the router using admin as both the login name and password (assuming you haven't changed the password) and go to logmanage.htm to turn it back on. You'll see a hidden options menu as displayed below:
On some firmware versions, there's a hotspot above the log tab (only when you're already on the log page) near the top of the blue bar that will take you to this screen too. Note: Changing any setting in the firmware will usually result in a warm reboot, so if you are in the middle of something online, finish it first. PPPoE sessions will be terminated too, which means a new IP address once the unit logs back in.

Some users have reported that their routers were getting too hot and dropping the wireless connection. Here is one solution that lifts the router off of the shelf or other surface allowing for better heat dissipation and improved airflow:

Use four empty 35mm film canisters with the lids removed. Place the router's feet into the canisters to lift the router about two inches off of the shelf or other surface. This extra room allows for both better airflow.

Here is what it will look like:
