    1. Before you order

(back)Millenicom is a company formed in June 1998 that began as a sort of "reseller" or "go-between" for dial-up users. They had access to the networks of many of the largest dial-up ISP's of the day, so as to offer "redundant" service to their customers. From the beginning they have offered 24-hour customer support for their users in multiple forms.

Nowadays, they offer mobile broadband through the Sprint PCS and Verizon Wireless networks using the 1xEVDO, or simply EVDO, standard. To access these networks, they send customers "air cards", which are a type of USB modem, that access the wireless cellular network of your respective carrier and carry data, or simply the Internet as you know it. (Learn more about EVDO, aka Evolution-Data Optimized, at »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-···ptimized)

(back)Millenicom offers 3 EVDO packages. Note that all packages have NO contract. Millenicom has a page on all their 3G offerings, see »www.millenicom.com/nmb.htm

Standard 5-gig Mobile Broadband @ $59.99/month: This is EVDO broadband offered via the Verizon network depending on which provider gives you better coverage. You are allotted 5-gigs of bandwidth per month. If you go over, Millenicom has the right to terminate your service. The modem (Pantech UM175) is provided and must be returned upon closing the account.

10-gig account with Verizon. If you buy the modem (Pantech UM175) at initial sign-up for $99.99, you will be upgraded to the 10-gig per month package.

Unlimited Mobile Broadband @ $69.99/month: This is only available for the Sprint and T-Mobile (HSDPA) networks, and are supported/activated by Simple Mobility. Verizon does NOT have unlimited service. This is EVDO mobile broadband without the 5-gig limit.

Unlimited Mobile Broadband "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) @ $69.99/month: Like the conventional Unlimited package, this is only for the Sprint network. This is EVDO mobile broadband without the 5-gig limit. The difference is that you are allowed to bring your own Sprint-compatible air-card for use on the service.

Any device that is compatible with the Sprint network is allowed on the BYOD Plan - including a MiFi.

Note that only 3G devices can be used on the BYOD plan. No cell phones, 3g/4g or 4g only devices. The unlimited plan used to provide a CDU-680 modem, but after replacing one, they will no longer replace it, and I have to buy a Sierra 598U or BYOD.

(back)Your Millenicom package, regardless of the modem, will include some sort of installation instructions. These are detailed, and in some cases photo-detailed, step-by-step instructions from opening the box to connecting to the Internet.

    got feedback?
Wrong!!! I only received the Novatech U760 in the box. No CD or install instructions. Would not autoinstall on any of them. I attempted to download the driver from MC's website onto 3 separate computers, but it gave me a message that the download was corrupted each time. BTW, the 24/7 tech support is not!

(back)The solution you're looking for is a Mobile Broadband Router. This is very similar to other routers however they have USB port(s) and have firmware that support the architecture of mobile devices. Millenicom themselves offer (at this writing) two mobile broadband routers, both made by Simple Mobility (SM). These will most certainly work and there's a good chance Millenicom will offer you support should you have trouble with the devices.

For most of us Millenicom users here at DSLR, we prefer (and strongly recommend!) routers made by Cradlepoint Technology (»www.cradlepoint.com/). They are easy to set up and use, and provide a very fast connection - faster than plugged directly into the computer according to personal experience and other user's experience, due to technology Cradlepoint calls "WiPipe".

(back)VERIZON VZACCESS MANAGER: (credits to Verizon Wireless support website, customized for Millenicom)
Connecting to the Internet is as simple as selecting the network connection type shown in the list of the VZAccess Manager and clicking the Connect button. Note that the Connect button immediately above the list will change to "Connect WWAN" as appropriate based on the current selection in the networks list.

    1. Select the "NationalAccess - Mobile Broadband" connection.
    2. Click the "Connect WWAN" button when it becomes enabled.

Once connected, the "Connect WWAN" button will change to "Disconnect". Simply click this to end your current connection.

    SPRINT - FRANKLIN CDU-680 (MOBILE BROADBAND - CDU680DORA)
Open the "Mobile Broadband - CDU680DORA" application. Insert your aircard if it is not already inserted, and wait until the Connection Manager reads "Disconnected" in dark text and shows a signal meter to the right. To connect, simply press the gray "GO" button. A window that says "Welcome to the Mobile Broadband" [sic] will appear once you are successfully connected. Click OK.

    SPRINT SMARTVIEW
This is about the simplest. Open the Sprint SmartView software and, on the Mobile Broadband tab,
    click Connect.

    T-MOBILE OPTION 452 - GLOBETROTTER MOBILITY MANAGER
Similar in simplicity to Sprint SmartView, except it's not Sprint, it's T-Mobile. Open the software, and when you're able to, click Connect.

(back)If you've got a poor signal, chances are you're either pretty far from the carrier tower or something is preventing you from getting a good signal where you would otherwise have good coverage. If you have a desktop system located on the floor underneath your desk, and your modem is located in a USB port on it - that is absolutely the worst place for signal. Extend the modem by using a USB extension cable and get it up in a window.

    1. TOO FAR
A little background on how your aircard gets it's signal - it has a small internal antenna inside. Small is the key word here - it's not going to be sufficient to receive that great of a signal in low coverage areas. However, aircards have connectors where you can plug in external antennas. (Note that, while very rarely, some aircards do NOT have external antenna ports. If you're with Millenicom, you're unlikely to have one that doesn't!)

There are several types of external antennas that might help you; the type of antenna you might need depends on your situation.

    • Directional antenna: This is a type of antenna that will focus the RF energy at a specific point or area that you aim it at. This is great if you are far away from your tower. (Our local EVDO expert, Jim_in_VA, has a post on his blog that outlines the different types of directional antennas. »evdotips.blogspot.com/2008/02/di···nas.html)

    • Omni-directional antenna (or simply an Omni antenna): This is ideal if you will be constantly be moving from place-to-place - for example, if you're a semi-truck driver that would like internet on-the-go.

There are many places you can buy EVDO antennas.

    »www.3gstore.com/ (has mostly omni antennas)
