1.0 Firefox

Install MrTech Toolkit Alpha (aka Local Install) to make it compatible.

Tools > Addons
Tools > Make all compatible
or you can right click the extension which FireFox marks not compatible and select "Make Compatible".

You also need to create this entry in about:config and set it to false.

Be aware that forcing an extension to work with Firefox 3 in this way may have undesired results. Do so at your own risk.

If you are getting pop-ups and pop-unders, which are mostly Flash based, you can try this tweak.

To block pop-ups from plugins, open your Firefox browser.

1) Type about:config in the address field.
2) Right-click in the resulting config page somewhere and select New -> Interger. 3) Type privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins in the resulting dialog, hit OK,
4) Type 2 in the next dialog and you're all set.

This pref can actually take three values:

• 0: open allowed
• 1: the opened windows are treated as popups, but they're allowed to open (we limit the number of these types of popups)
• 2: the window is a popup, block it

Navigate to your Firefox profile folder and look in the searchplugins folder. Delete the files corresponding to the search engines you don't want. Each search plugin is a text file which you can view to determine its function.

The default set of search plugins is found in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox install folder, and is only used when a new profile is created.

You can also use the Firefox Search Engine Manager. Alternate download link here.

There are two ways to do this:

1. Set the cache size to zero.

OR...

2.Type about:config in the url bar and hit enter.

Move down to browser.cache.check_doc_frequency

Change the value to any of the ones listed below.

0 = Once per session
1 = Each time
2 = Never
3 = When appropriate/automatically

In FireFox if type about:config in your address bar it brings up a page of browser settings. Ever wonder what those settings are/do? wonder no longer, This page contains an extensive list of About:config entries

Example:

If you go to the following section you can see it tells you about the URL connected to the Throbber. Now if you go to about:config and click on browser.throbber.url you can change the URL the Thrrobber takes you to when clicked.

browser.throbber
Settings for the browser's throbber

]]>
browser.throbber.url
Specifies URI to load when browser throbber is clicked

You can have FireFox start with tabs open by going to the menu at the top and selecting Tools>Options and selecting the General tabs. In the Home Page Box enter your web sites like the example below:

Firefox Clean Install Instructions for Windows OS.
Just removing the Firefox folder itself and installing a new build will not fix any sever issues you are having.
Follow the steps below to reinstall Firefox correctly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Download Firefox v2.0.0.12 (or current version)

2. CREATE A BACKUP OF YOUR PROFILE. You can simply copy everything to another folder on your hard drive that will give Firefox the ability to retrieve your prior settings, bookmarks, etc. If you have customized your search plugins,back them up also. (They are in the installation directory, not in the profile).
(Newly added search plugins will be stored in the profile in Firefox v2.0.0.12 (or current version); you may wish to move the entire search plugins folder from the installation directory to your profile folder).

3. Uninstall any previous version(s) of Firefox. In Windows use the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
After uninstalling Firefox, Windows users should go back and delete the Firefox installation directory, typically:
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.

Note* If using a .zip version of Firefox proceed to the location you installed the .zip build and delete the entire Firefox folder.

4. Delete the Firefox folder in the Firefox "profiles" location. (Do not simply delete the "profiles" subfolder. Make sure to delete the Firefox folder containing the "profiles" folder and related files, including "profiles.ini).
Note* If using a .zip build proceed to the location that you have placed your Profile Folder and delete the Profile folder.

5. Delete the Mozilla Folders found here (One Mozilla folder in each location):

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Mozilla
&
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla

6. Install Firefox v2.0.0.12 (or current version).
You can reboot your PC so you have a fresh start and do not install any extensions or themes until you have v2.0.0.12 successfully installed.

Move to Step 7 if reinstall of Firefox is successful.

7. BEFORE you open Firefox, copy key settings back from your prior profile(s). From your Backup profile folder (created in step #2). Copy over bookmarks.html, cookies.txt, hostperm.1, key3.db, signon.txt, formhistory.dat, userChrome.css, userContent.css, and user.js from your backup to your newly created profile.
Note: userChrome.css & userContent.css are located in your Profile in the Chrome folder and only need copied into your new Profile if you have customized them previously.
8. Start Firefox and make sure it is functioning correctly. Now reinstall any extensions and themes you may use.

Notes: Parts of this instruction list from Mozilla.

How do I reinstall Firefox v3?

Firefox Clean Install Instructions for Windows OS.
Just removing the Firefox folder itself and installing a new build will not fix any sever issues you are having.
Follow the steps below to reinstall Firefox correctly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Download Firefox v3 (or current version)

2. CREATE A BACKUP OF YOUR PROFILE.

Normally, using MozBackup should work without conflict. However, if your installation or profile become damaged, you may not be able to load Firefox properly. In this event, you may want to manually backup your settings and start a new profile.

- Locate the Firefox profile folder. On Windows 2000/XP, this folder is found at:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

- Backup the following files:
bookmarks.html = Bookmarks
cookies.txt = Cookies
formhistory.dat = Form History
history.dat = History
hostperm.1 = Exceptions
prefs.js = Preferences
user.js = Custom user preferences
/chrome/userChrome.css - Interface preferences
signons.txt = Saved passwords. Requires the "key3.db" file to work.
key3.db = Supplements password file.

NOTE: Alternatively you may copy the entire profile folder. When using this method, you may have to edit the paths in the chrome.rdf file on the destination PC for the copied profile to work properly. See this thread for details.

FireFox 2.0 now has a built in spell checker which uses underlining of misspelled words which you then right click on the work and select the correct one. But if you prefer the old pop up spell checking box there is Spellbound-II-2.0

This allows you to spell check forms (e.g. message board posts, blog
entries, wysiwyg, etc.) before submitting them when using your Mozilla
Firefox or Mozilla Suite browser.

The old spell checker can be found here SpellBound.

Here's the correct way to make a new Profile.

First close all FireFox browser windows. Then go Start>Run and type in the following (or the path to where you have FireFox installed).

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P

This will let you create a new Profile without destroying the old one.

For those of you who don't want to wait for the developers to update their extensions, you can do it yourself, and this is how. Also, this is written from a Windows XP perspective, although I have done the same thing in Linux, I've only had to substitute the Windows programs for a Linux one. I have provided a couple of screenshots to help with some of these steps. Sorry I can't put them (the pics) in order. See post »[FireFox] Forcing extensions to work

Step 1.
Download and install an archiving program like 7zip »7zip.org

Step 2.
Select the extension that you want to update. Right click the extension and extract the contents to your desktop.

Step 3.
Select the install.rdf file and edit it in a text editor like notepad (windows) or emacs (unix/linux).

Step 4.
Search for the max version tag and change the version from the current one (which should be 1.0) to 1.6

Step 5.
Save the install.rdf file that you just changed.

Step 6.
Go back to your extension that you opened earlier and open it in your archiving program. You will then see the contents of the .xpi file, including the original install.rdf file. Now you will select and copy the install.rdf file that you just recently edited, and paste it (or drag and drop it) into the open contents of the .xpi file (that is opened in your archiving program.)

If you have any questions about this procedure, please post in the Mozilla forum or send a private message to the FAQ author.

If Spellbound isn't working and you have a back up copy of your old install do the following:

You need to reinstall any dictionaries you have previously installed. The easiest way to do this is to copy the myspell directory which is located in the original application's components directory (e.g.where you originally installed Firefox) into the new application's components directory.

Yes. However you'll need to use different profiles for each instance you open or multiple copies of the same profile to do so.

Open your operating system's command shell and type the following lines in bold.

Windows:

C:\>cd C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox>set MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox>firefox.exe -p
-or-
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox>firefox.exe -Profile "C:\Path\to\profile"

Linux & OSX:

$ cd /firefox/location
$ export MOZ_NO_REMOTE=1
$ ./firefox -p
-or-
$ ./firefox -Profile "/path/to/profile"

To simplify the process, you can create either a batch file or shell script to quickly open multiple instances of Firefox at once. Just remember that each instance must not share its profile with any of the other active instances. Removing the profile lock file while Firefox is running is not recommended.

Feedback received on this FAQ entry:
  • Firefox Portable (portableapps.com) can handle this automagically for you. You just have to set AllowMultipleInstances to 'true' in its .ini file; this merely sets the -no-remote and -profile flags for startup. Since this will cause the PAF launcher to terminate after starting Firefox, you wouldn't want to do this with the one(s) you install into the PAc menu/platform. You should only do it with the ones you install "standalone", being aware that it removes true portability for that instance. However, this will allow you to run as many instances as you want for as many different releases as you want, all isolated one from the other.

2. Locate your Profile Folder and open it.

3. Delete these 4 files: extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.cache & xul.mfl

4. Close the Profile Folder and start Firefox.*
