Yes. Anyone can moderate a game of mafia. However, it is recommended (not mandatory) that you have played several games first before trying to tackle moderating a game yourself. Moderating a game requires knowledge of the inner workings of the game. You need to be sure to balance the sides (Pro-Town & Anti-Town) and sometimes that is not so easy when you have not played enough games yourself. If you are interested in trying your hand at moderating a game, simply post a sign up thread in the forum using the [Signup] tag, the game number and name (if you choose to name it) and wait until the required number of players have shown interest in your game. It is not mandatory, but it is helpful upon reaching the chosen amount of players if you also include a link to the game thread in the sign up thread.

As far as modding a game goes, it is in the best interest of the Mod to keep his/her nose out of the business of the game. His/her role is to do a few simple tasks.
1) Post Vote Counts (Unless decided by the mod to not be done..) 2) Post day/night text. 3) The occasional Mod Kill for any number of reasons (editing a post, not following the rules..) 4) Helping the thread along if it has stalled for a lengthy period.
The mod should avoid helping any of the players along. There should be no clarifications. If a role pm was messed up, it is up to the mod and the player to resolve it through PM's.

There are at least two ways that you can allow the Mafia to communicate that will not cost you anything and are also free.
1) Site IM's are one way. It's free. It's part of the site but it is very limited. 2) A free forum from proboards is probably one of the best ways. »www.proboards.com/index.html It's free and simple and allows all of the mafia to communicate. The forums can be hidden and password protected.

A very simple answer for this one. Google docs ( »docs.google.com ). It requires a google email ady which is free. This allows you to create spreadsheets and word documents that are stored at google and can be accessed from anywhere that has an internet connection. Here is an example spreadsheet showing what one usually looks like.
»spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=···E1w5ciBw
Along with that here is an example word document showing what goes into a game before it even starts:

Every mod has their own way of doing things. I will post my ways of doing things here for examples. For the examples I've had to add spaces so that the site does not pick it up as code. Feel free to use my examples, just remove the spaces.
Vote Counts: Current Vote Count: Lurlyn831 - 2 - Kewlkarim, Dezbend
Code for this is: < b >< u >Current Vote Count:< /u >< /b > Lurlyn831 - 2 - Kewlkarim, Dezbend As you can see the actual vote count has no special coding. It says that Lurlyn831 has 2 votes and they were cast by Kewlkarim and Dezbend.
-------------------------------------------------------- Player Lists: Player Lists: muzscman
Code for this is: < b >< u >Player Lists:< /u >< /b > [ user = Muzscman ]
-------------------------------------------------------- Day/Night Text: It was a dark night
Code for this is: < i >It was a dark night< /i >
Our very own Johnny came up with a C9 Vote Recorder which can be found here »C9 Automatic Vote Recorder for Mac

Currently, there are two applications that have been developed by members of DSLReports.
First is a full-featured application written by Johnny for Mac OS X to automate several tasks, such as randomizing roles and generating the vote count post. The application currently supports C9 and F11 variants.
 MafiaC9Arrays.zip 120,792 bytes
Second is an application written by drew for Windows. It relies on the .NET 3.5 Framework. The application is designed to keep track of votes and generate the post. It is not currently limited to C9 or F11 variants, but due to that, several automation features are not included. Download Mafia Vote Counter here
