1. General Info

What is SETI@home, and where can I get more project information?

SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is a scientific effort aiming to determine if there is intelligent life out in the universe. There are many methods that SETI scientific teams use to search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Many of these search billions of radio frequencies that flood the universe, looking for another civilization that might be transmitting a radio signal. Other SETI teams search by looking for signals in pulses of light emanating from the stars.

Seti@home is one of the SETI projects that searches for extraterrestrial life. Seti@home allows anyone with a computer and an Internet connection to take part in the search. By using the computer while the owner is away, the Seti@home program (either the CLI or screen saver) is able to search for extraterrestrial signals.

Why should I join?

There are many reasons to join, each people have there own reasons. Personally I like helping science. I also like the idea of teams and how competitive our team is. You might not like SETI, but I encourage you to try it. Maybe you'll just get hooked like the rest of us.

Do SETI Work Units have a Time Limit or Expire?

No, they do not have a time limit or expiration. Do not worry if you think an older PC is taking too long to complete a Work Unit. It will be properly credited to your SETI account and to the Team no matter how long it takes.

For quite a while now we have been sending the data out multiple times over the course of a day or so without waiting for a result at all. That allows us to delete the file from our local disks sooner than we otherwise would (as soon as we've received at least two results) and keep our splitters generating data files at a high rate.
