There is a program called BHODemon. It can help guard against harmful ActiveX Controls. You can get it here.

Also you can prompt for ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer.

Most antivirus programs do not protect against Adware and Spyware, However some do, one example is Norton Antivirus 2004.
