3. Cap Issues

In the last few years SBC has implemented port 25 (SMTP) blocks in various regions of the country to try to combat Spam email. For example - SBC/Ameritech (»AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »Does ameritech block any ports? (Update 08/16/2005)) - and this may extend to other areas over time.

If you feel you are being blocked you should first check your own firewalls or routers. You can then try the Telnet test found here: »AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »The Telnet Test for SMTP Server Connectivity

If you find Port 25 is blocked by SBC you can follow the instructions in this document: »AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »Here's what to do if port 25 is blocked for you

A cap is a bandwidth (speed) limit placed on the download portion of the DSL service. The upload rate is fixed to either 128kb (CO based installs), 160kb (RT installs), 250kb (Deluxe Service) or 384kb (Expert Service) and are never capped.

Download caps are as follows: 192, 384, 768, 1536 and 6000. Technically they are 192-384, 384-1536, 384-768, 384, 192 interleaved, 384 interleaved, 1536-6044

Your line quality or line distance indicates that you will have problems maintaining service sync. A reduction in bandwidth often makes an unusable service reliable. Without the cap your DSL connection may repeatedly be disconnected.

However, some lines are inadvertently capped and can support full service speed. In order to determine if your line will support either a higher cap or having the cap lifted call ASI. See the phone list.
