1. Just the Basics

Southwest Bell Abbreviation List

If you have any other abbreviations to add please IM Flippant with the information. Thank you

Do I call SBIS or ASI?

Southwestern Bell Internet Services (NETHELP)should be called if your having problems with email, news, or your username and password. All issues with your extra email accounts and PHP (personal home page) space. They will also handle your billing issues. Static/DHCP/PPPoE IP connection problems, router problems and registration problems.

Advanced Solutions Inc. (ASI) which also includes the Self Install Helpdesk (CSI), should be called if your having problems with your connection. Sync, speed, weird noises on your phone line, and such issues. Problems with DSL line installation, capping issues and general speed problems. They can not help you with anything that SBIS can. You will simply get transferred.

How do I get my SBC modem rebate?

This applies to Southwestern Bell, Nevada Bell, Pacific Bell, SNET, and Ameritech.

First, there are two rebate amounts being honored by the SBC Companies: $149 and $199.

Secondly, if the website tools are not functioning or bringing up information, customers can call (888) 241-6225 to talk with a representative about confirming or receiving their rebates. Note that occasionally when the line is busy, you will hear one or two rings, silence for a minute, and then a busy signal. At that point, try calling again. Their hours are Mon-Fri 6AM-11PM, Sat 8AM-11PM, and Sun 9AM-11PM, all times Central.

If possible, do have your Order or Service Order number ready when calling. You will need your order number to register for the rebate online.

Note: What they send you is a single sheet tri-fold that looks very much like junk mail!

The rebate info site is at: www.sbc199reward.com

What about dialup with DSL?

DSL service includes free dialup within parts of the SWBell coverage area, and roaming access from outside the network. Please read the Roaming Access Service Policy.

The following is a list of free access dialup phone number.

How to opt out of the SBC marketing list.

Per the Terms of Service, SBC will sell your email address and all public domain information they have on you, to third party companies. You can stop this by going here http://sbc.m0.net/m/u/sbc/unsub.asp and filling it out. Or give your local SBC phone company a call and tell the rep you would like to "opt-out". They then have thirty days to remove all your information from there lists.

How can I report spam or email abuse to SBC?

If you feel that someone within SBC's domain is spamming you, you can report it to their policy department at 877-655-4410.

After investigating the problem and identifying the culprit, they claim that they will shut down the offending account immediately. They state that they take all legitimate claims seriously.

Billing Statement After Upgrade: Help I can't understand it!

The new rate plan may take 1-2 bill cycles before you see the change on your bill... This is because you never know where within your cycle you have made this change...

Some customers are billed in arrears rather than advance for their DSL service. Please take a moment to look at the bill dates on your phone bill. For example... At the top of your telephone company bill there should be a date next to your phone number stating the bill cycle you are in for your phone service ie May 29, 2003. On page 10 (or whatever page your DSL charges are on) there is a separate date next to those charges.. (Please note here that DSL is a service billed on behalf of SBCIS and not the telephone company) That date may show say 4-27. Now if you called in on June 1st to ask for the new rate you still have at least 1 more bill at the old rate before you see the change.. (Think your DSL bill date is 4-27 and you still have the bill from 5-27 since you called in on 6-1)

?Clear as mud?

Now on to the next thought..

Your 1st bill (when you get the new rate plan) will look a bit confusing or ummm high... This is because whenever you start a new plan our system see just a new plan and doesn't recognize you as an existing customer... So here comes a brief explanation of proration charges:

It is normal (believe it or not) to see on page 10:

Charges for 888-888-1212
Account Code dslusername
1 05/12 DSL INTERNET SERVICE DISCOUNT 20.00cr
2 05/12 SBC YAHOO! DSL STANDARD PLUS PACKAGE 81.42

Account Subtotal for dslusername .... 61.42

> Total Itemized Charges for SBC Internet Svcs (before taxes) 61.42

By now your thinking what??? 61.42 what happened to 29.95 This is where you need to take a look at page 1 of your phone bill... underneath the Previous Charges and Credits section you should see:

> Previous Charges and Credits
Amount of Last Bill ..... 72.15
Payments Applied: 05-06-03 ..... 72.15cr
Adjustments: SBC Internet Svcs ..... 31.47cr

Credit Balance ..... 31.47cr

So if you take 61.42-31.47= 29.95...

How To Transfer DSL with Minimal Downtime?

First and most important you cannot run dual service!!! This means you cannot have the phone at your old location connected at the same time as your new location

Since Late November SBC has started a new process of transferring DSL service. You will no longer have to wait for a disconnection at your old location, change your phone number to make the process quicker, merge your accounts or calling billing for out of service adjustments (dont believe me?? think its impossible? I had my doubts as well.. thats why it took me so long to make this post ) Anyhow..

Once you have established your orders for transfer of service with the telephone company.. Note: These orders must be within the same region.. you qualify if the order numbers the telephone company gives you start with the letters F/T

Ask to be transferred to the EPC to "transfer your DSL" Note here there are alot of new EPC reps out there as of lately... make sure they understand that you want to transfer service..

An order for switching your service will go according to this time line:

IF your POTS orders are due on the same day the DSL will disconnect on the first day at the old location then reestablish 4 business days later.. IE today is Monday your orders are scheduled for today.. your DSL should be reconnected Friday

If your POTS orders are due say today (Monday) for disconnection and Reconnection on Tuesday Next week then your DSL will be reconnected on Wednesday Next week..

If your POTS orders are due say disconnect today (Monday) and connecting Wednesday (this week) then your DSL will be reconnected Tuesday next week..

Your accounts should deactivate and reactivate in billing/tech support records on their own (believe it or not I have seen it work)

Thank you only me!

What is the distance limit for DSL?

SWBell initially had a 16000 foot limit then reduced that to a 14000 foot limit. The latest policy is to try any viable circuit, however, to do this they have removed a guarantee on a minimum bandwidth (download speed). During the times of the above mentioned distance limits a download rate of 384 kb/s was guaranteed. They will now try hard to achieve at least 192 kb/s download, but make no promises on down or up rates anymore.

This new policy does have many benefits to their customers. Under the old system the only way to maintain a guarantee of 384 kb/s was to deny service to anyone who could not achieve this rate. This would occur before and after the service was installed. So people who could not maintain the minimum guaranteed rate were routinely denied service even if they wanted to try the best rate possible under the minimum. The distance limit was then changed 14000 feet in what may be seen as an effort to try and limit the number of disappointed customers. This 14000 foot limit clearly denied viable service to many potential customers, but there were fewer angry ones. However to deny service to a potential happy customer is not smart business for either.

The latest policy to remove both minimum distance and guaranteed minimum speed now allows the customer to try the service and decide for themselves if they are willing to use it at whatever rate they can achieve. This puts the decision in the hands of the customer, clearly where it belongs. To do this they have loosened the rules on the one year contract. Now the customer has one month to decide if they are willing you use the service they have. So far this is an unwritten policy, you should confirm before ordering. This is a good policy for whatever distance the customer has.

What is the best way to check if I DSL is available to me.

Call ASI and the Emerging Products Center (EPC), 888-792-3751, and ask if you are within range for DSL service. If there seems to be any doubt you can request a Mechanized loop qualification test. This may take a few days to accomplish as your line loop will have to be manually tested.

Short of installing DSL, there is currently no sure way to tell how well the service will work for you.

What physical tests can be done for DSL?

When a customer may be denied DSL service SWBell engineering will often run these physical tests to assist in the decision of whether DSL should be offered or not.

MLT- Mechanized loop test.
Checks for - Voltage (switch and foreign), current, tone ringer (ringers or half ringer), capacitive (longitudinal) balance, resistance faults (shorts, grounds, crosses), opens, and distance.

MLTs are available in most SBC C.O.s to SBC (non-CLEC) customers. It is a carry over from POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and not designed for DSL, but can be helpful for DSL trouble shooting.

SBC (non-CLEC) DSL customers should ask for a "Coppermax" test before an MLT on any DSL issues. It is performed by ASI. It is not available everywhere but is geared specifically for DSL.

Please Note: MLT tests are available for RT's but coppermax is not.

Thanks to nunya01 for the test information!

Ordering DSL line only - Obsolete

Unfortunately the ability to do this is no longer available.

What is the best way to order when moving

Please note this applies to the Southwestern Bell Region Only!!!

I have no idea what procedures are taken in other Bell regions..

Moving your DSL:

This can be as simple as moving from one apartment to the one next door or moving across town... Either way heres what happens in general..

Customer calls in to place an order to move service.. you may have heard this referred to as F/T... You speak to a telephone company representative to do this..

Please note here that regardless of how many times this rep tells you she/he can handle the transfer of your DSL service.. She/He cannot and request at the end of the call to be transferred to the EPC (Emerging Products Center)

Once you have spoken to an EPC rep they will assure you they can handle the transfer of service from one location to another... (This is for the most part a true statement)

Basically here are the steps that take place during the transfer that the customer doesn't actually see.. but will feel when service is delayed...

From order is completed on say 8-11 to disconnect telephone service at your old location.. This generates a report of telephone service disconnections to ASI... ASI sees there is no actual dial tone at this address and issues a disconnection order for your DSL..Note I said ASI has to disconnect your DSL and not Telco... A standard disconnection order takes 3 business days to complete..

Now the To order to connect your telephone service may have been scheduled for the same day 8-11.. what does this mean for your DSL??? Nothing... At this point you are waiting for that disconnect order to post to the system (3 days remember?) So 3 days go by and the EPC person you talked to probably a week ago by now.. is following up on your account.. 3 days later she sees the disconnect complete and puts in a brand new order for your DSL service at this new address.. What does this now mean?? 5 business days to reconnect... UGG what happened to what that telephone company rep told you about 1 week downtime?? (yes they say that all the time)

Why does this happen.. or better yet why does this take so darn long.. why can't SBC just flip a switch??? Because we are all separate entities of SBC.. and alot of reps don't understand it so they cannot explain it...

ASI cannot see your telephone records.. they don't know how much your bill is or who is listed on your account or if you have Caller ID...

The telephone company on the other had has no idea just by looking at your phone company records.. what speed tier you are on for DSL.. or why it doesn't work..

So the EPC acts as the middle man.. Basically records must establish themselves in order to send them to ASI and that takes a day or two.. So when everyone follows up in a timely manner and orders flow thru a customer can have DSL back up and running in less than 2 weeks.. This of course is in a perfect process.. On the other hand if someone at the EPC isn't following your account or for various other reasons..outages can be much longer when moving..

Oh and by the way... Does it help if you change your telephone number when you move??? Well sometimes.. If you are one of the customers who decides to have dual service.. meaning disconnecting your phone on 8-15 but connecting at the new location on 8-11 then yes definitely.. but thats a whole 'nother book all together..

New News Servers SBCGLOBAL part of Prodigy.

Important newsgroups update
On July 24, 2001, your Usenet Newsgroup server will change from Swbell.net.net (e.g., news.dallas.swbell.net) to SBCglobal.net, supported by Prodigy. To continue using Usenet Newsgroups after the final transition date of August 24, you'll need to update your newsgroup software with new server information. Your new server will again depend on your region. Below is a list of the news servers now available:

news.dallas.sbcglobal.net
news.houston.sbcglobal.net
news.kc.sbcglobal.net

For example, if your server was originally news.swbell.net and you live in Dallas, you're new server will now be news.dallas.sbcglobal.net. You will exchange "swbell.net" for "region.sbcglobal.net" in your current settings. Pick the region that is geographically closest to you.

--
When you set up the news server be sure to use [your SWBell Username]@swbell.net for the login username.

Which DNS Servers should I be using?

In general you should allow the DNS server to be obtained when you get an IP. However you may find one of the other DNS servers provide better speed for you. Here is the last known list of new DNS servers:

Updated December 2006 for the entire AT&T Network

Old servers have been removed from this list.

How do I make a dedicated DSL line in an apartment or other multi-user dwelling?

Having a dedicated pair to use for DSL doesn't mean that a new wire must be placed. If there is extra pairs available in the existing wire then they can be used. A step-by-step post with pictures can be seen here:

Apartment Install

This method uses a filter placed outside and makes use of one of the extra pairs in the existing wire.

The computer froze when I tried to connect with Enternet300

Restart your computer, double click on the Enternet 300 Icon, at the top Click on Connection, Settings, Advanced. Make sure its set to Private API, and change the filter driver to protocol, and reboot. This should correct the problem.

I get a Failed to load TAP error.

Uninstall/reinstall Enternet 300 software. Create a new profile. This should correct the problem.
Update 27 June 01 from Ranma

In Enternet 300, go to Connections-Settings-Advanced, change filter driver to protocol driver.
When reinstalling Enternet 300, be sure to CTRL-ALT-DEL and end task all programs running in the background. The "Failed to load TAP" error can occur repeatedly after each install if there is a software conflict during installation.

No connection detected when using Internet Ecplorer.

Click on Try again. This should connect you. (This is a known error using some versions of IE.)

Upgrading to IE 5.01 (Service Pack 1) or higher will permanently get rid of this problem.

For versions previous to IE5.01:
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> select "Microsoft Internet Explorer" -> Add/Remove button -> Repair Internet Explorer -> OK. This will only be a short term solution until you upgrade.

How do I wire up a filter and a dedicated wire in my outside dmarc?

This is a step-by-step way to wire an outside dmarc (teleco box that separates the inside house wiring from the outside teleco wiring). This method needs to used if there's an alarm, or the existing wiring degrades the DSL line.

How do you wire up a dedicated DSL line in an office or small business?

A step-by-step pictorial can be found here:

My Speed Stream Modem runs very hot.

Efficient Speed Stream modems tend to run hot. For maximum cooling they should be placed in a well ventilated area and placed on its side. It is also known that sometimes the models are shipped with the wrong AC/DC converter.

Modem revision 1.6 and earlier work better with the 15-18 v power supply. Revision 1.7 and the new ones with no rev # should work better with a 12 v power supply. In both cases, better means cooler. Rev 1.6 and earlier usually work with the 12 v PS, but sometimes get too hot to touch.

Standing the modem on its side is better as the regulator is on the right side of the board as viewed from the front.

3. Cap Issues

What ports and services does SBC block?

In the last few years SBC has implemented port 25 (SMTP) blocks in various regions of the country to try to combat Spam email. For example - SBC/Ameritech (»AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »Does ameritech block any ports? (Update 08/16/2005)) - and this may extend to other areas over time.

If you feel you are being blocked you should first check your own firewalls or routers. You can then try the Telnet test found here: »AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »The Telnet Test for SMTP Server Connectivity

If you find Port 25 is blocked by SBC you can follow the instructions in this document: »AT&T Midwest/Ameritech FAQ »Here's what to do if port 25 is blocked for you

What is a cap?

A cap is a bandwidth (speed) limit placed on the download portion of the DSL service. The upload rate is fixed to either 128kb (CO based installs), 160kb (RT installs), 250kb (Deluxe Service) or 384kb (Expert Service) and are never capped.

Download caps are as follows: 192, 384, 768, 1536 and 6000. Technically they are 192-384, 384-1536, 384-768, 384, 192 interleaved, 384 interleaved, 1536-6044

Why have I been capped?

Your line quality or line distance indicates that you will have problems maintaining service sync. A reduction in bandwidth often makes an unusable service reliable. Without the cap your DSL connection may repeatedly be disconnected.

However, some lines are inadvertently capped and can support full service speed. In order to determine if your line will support either a higher cap or having the cap lifted call ASI. See the phone list.

4. Troubleshooting

What can I do to get better performance out of my DSL connection?

This is free advice so please take it if you need it.

Often we as customers complain about our service and wonder why no one seems to be doing enough. Have you done enough? We expect SBC and ASI to bend over backwards to bring us a better connection when often we have made little or no such effort on or own end.

Do you have a POTS splitter?

Please keep in mind that the device you plug into your phone jacks all over your house are not POTS "Plain Old Telephone Service" splitters but filters and if you are doing this all of your non DSL lines under your house are counting in your total line length and are robbing you of bandwidth. A POTS splitter goes inside of or next to your SNI/NID which is usually a gray or black box located outside where your phone line comes into your house. On one side of the POTS splitter is DSL and the other side is POTS or voice this keeps the DSL signal from running in all of your other lines under your house which will add to your line length. POTS splitters run from around forty dollars and up and depending on which one you buy and where it may be a module that fits in your SNI/NID or a separate box all together. I recommend getting the module type and personally use the LPF-200 by antec products. You can find some nice examples of how this is done here and for older SNIs here. Be sure to take out that half-ringer since it can add to the length of your line.

Do you have a dedicated or "home run" line?

Dedicated or "home run" means that the line for your DSL runs from the SNI/NID to the wall jack or interface for your DSL modem and nowhere else and it is best to have no other devices installed on this line. It is also best to use CAT5 "category 5" cable to run your dedicated or "home run" line. You can use any of the four pair to do this and it is often suggested that you use pair number two or the orange and white pair. You can also go the extra mile by running CAT5 from your wall jack or interface to your modem of course you will have to do some trimming "cut some of the other wires back" to allow it to fit into the module plug.

Always remember these important rules while routing ANY CAT5 cable:

1.

 Never stretch your CAT5 cable.

2.

Always keep your CAT5 cable at least six inches away from ANY other cables this is VERY important for electrical cables as this will cause more noise on the line. If you are a bad judge of distance a dollar bill is usually six inches.

3.

Never un-twist the pair any more than one half of an inch, one quarter of an inch is even better if you can get it connected. The same goes for stripping it including the outside jacket.

4.

If you have to cross other cables do so at a ninety degree angle.

5.

Never crush or kink your CAT5 cable. This includes stapling your CAT5 cable. Use hangers for such purposes which you can get from radio shack or staple wire ties which you can get almost anywhere.

6.

Make sure you don't run your CAT5 into a spike or surge protection device as there are sometimes problems with these like you didn't know your new puppy likes to pee in it. =o) It also should not be needed as SBC should have such protection in your SNI/NID already.

Are you sharing your dsl with others in the house?

Invest in a DSL gateway or router as ICS, Sygate and other software alternatives just don't do as good of a job and cause you to have to leave a computer on so the other computers can use the connection. If you only have one IP a gateway will do just fine. Make sure that what ever you purchase will support PPPoE "point-to-point protocol over ethernet (RFC 2516)". Most that are made for DSL do but it is always a good ideal to make sure since many of the europe DSL providers use PPTP "point-to-point tunneling protocol (RFC 1171)" or PPPoA "point-to-point protocol over ATM (RFC 2364)". DSL gateways can be purchased for as little as thirty dollars depending on where you shop and how much security you are looking for most of them offer NAT "network address translator (RFC 1631)" protection at the very least and are well worth the investment. Also most of them have a built in DHCP "dynamic host configuration protocol (RFC 2131)" server that makes it easy to use multiple platforms without all of the setup nightmares.

 Are your settings correct?

Your MTU "maximum transmission unit" and RCVWINDOW "receive window" are the most important but you should not ignore the rest. If you are not getting one hundred percent transfer efficiency on the DSL-Reports tweak test it is probably your settings and they offer some helpful advice there. I usually obtain best results with an MTU of 1500 and an RWIN of 65535 but your results may vary depending on your line conditions. The DSL-Reports tweak tester is here

Do you have noise on your line?

If you have noise on your line it may be RF interference you can find good information on tracking it down here.

Remember if you refuse to go the extra mile then you can't expect others to do it either and you will find if you have most of the techs will be able to get to the root of your problem much quicker.

Thanks to everyone whose fine post I have used in reference here and DSL-Reports for such a fine resource. I couldn't have done this with out you.

I can connect on Windows 2000 but my browser won't work.

This is a bug in the tcp/ip programming for Enternet 300 version 1.34-1.41c that occasionally prevents Windows 2000 users from being able to browse. Go to Help-About in the Enternet 300 to find out which version you have. As of this posting Ameritech has Enternet 300 v1.5 for download but not on hardcopy yet. You will be better off with RASpppoe or a router with built-in PPPOE software than Enternet .

* If you are using Enternet 300 v1.34, the easiest way to fix this is to change Private API to DHCP in the Connections-Settings-Advanced window in the Enternet 300.

* If you are already using Enternet 300 v1.5, try one of the following:

1) Install Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000, according to Efficient Networks, this fixes some bugs in the networking components for Windows 2000.

2) Right click on the Enternet 300 icon in the systray click on "Advanced", and click on "log". If it keeps saying "IP address is still not programmed" every second, then go to the Enternet.ini file(do a search or find for it by going to Start-Find or Search) and edit the IPProgramWait= to a value higher than 30, you can have a value between 1 to 60 and 30 is the default number of retries. This is the number of times it tries to reprogram the IP address per second.

*If you can browse but have intermittent trouble, then download Enternet 300 v1.5 from the SBC Drivers website with the username: dslsoft and password: driver when you are experiencing one of those times that you can browse.

* If you can't browse at all then connect with the Enternet 300, go to Start-Run, type command, click Ok, type ipconfig /release, right click on the Enterent 300 tray icon, select disconnect, then reconnect with the Enternet 300, open your browser. If you want you can also type ipconfig before releasing the IP, you will see that you have 0.0.0.0 for your ip address, after reconnecting it will still show your IP address as 0.0.0.0 but you can browse. Once you can browse, go to the SBC Drivers website with the username: dslsoft and password: driver to upgrade to Enternet 300 v1.5

If you would like to trouble shoot this more thoroughly you can go to the Enternet FAQ at the Efficient Networks website.

Here is a excerpt from the Enternet 300 v1.5a Release Notes (file is in pdf.format):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workaround for Microsoft TCP/IP address setting problem with W2K. The workaround fixes a problem occurring with some Windows 2000 systems whose browsers are unable to browse correctly upon connection. Note that there is also a problem with the Windows 2000 in general which requires service pack 1 for resolution. In all cases, we recommend that you install service pack 1 before installing Enternet 300 v1.5a for Windows.

How to fix Freezes/Stalls (PPPoE only)

These instructions are for PPPoE software users only (Enternet, XP PPPoE, RASPPPoE, WinPoet). If you have DHCP or PPPoE through a router this can make things much worse. If your computer has to logon to access the internet and you notice delays/freezes/stalls while the OS boots up or when browsing or at seemingly random times. The following will likely cure it:

•Open Control Panel.

•Open Network.

•Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, especially Enternet or NTS and VPN type bindings). Note: If you have a 4060 USB modem, select TCP/IP-> Efficient Networks SpeedStream 4060 CIP/1483

•Select it and press properties

•Select IP address from the tab

Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? If so, change that to Specify an IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively. You can enter a gateway of 192.168.1.138 as well.

Click OK and OK, and the computer will build a driver information database and will require a reboot for the changes to take effect.

This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adapter, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".

I cannot get to some websites! (AKA 70.240.*.* and 70.241.*.* issue)

If your IP address starts with 70.240 or 70.241, you may have issues getting to some web sites due to providers not allowing this range. This is because these IP ranges are brand new and have yet to be recognized by some smaller providers.

A good guide (and some background information) can be found here: http://www.removed.us/ipguide

So, you want a speedier connection?

__NAME OF POSTER__ -- If you would like to take a short trip over to the broadband tweak forum, and answer as many of the following 11 questions as possible, about your particular system set-up. I'm sure you will get all the advice and information you need from the good people in this forum - myself included.

- The RAM

Where can I find the MTU settings for my Linksys router?

The MTU setting can be found at the bottom of the Advanced/Filter configuration table. Enable the MTU and adjust accordingly. If you leave it disabled it will default to 1492. If you don't see this setting on that page you need to upgrade the firmware for the unit.

Line information/stats from my modem?

If your modem is capable of giving you stats of your dsl line, or if ASI sends you your line information upon request, you might wonder what it all is. Below are the four most common things you will see, and the only four that you will need to worry about.

1. Line Capacity
2. Line Noise
3. Attenuation
4. Signal Power

Line capacity will show you how much of your line you are currently using. 0 being none, and 100 being the max. You want this to stay under 90.

Line noise will show you the current rate at which your dsl signal is hitting your modem and going back to the dslam. Ranging from 0 to 31, Where 0 is the worst and 31 is the best. The higher it is, the better.

Attenuation is the rate at which your dsl signal attenuates over your line from the dslam to your modem. This will be anywhere from 0 to 60. Where 0 is the best and 60 is the worst. You want this to be in the 10-20 range.

Keep in mind that everyone's line will be different then the next persons. If you have any question about this feel free to IM me.

Enternet300 keeps crashing or giving Fatal Exception errors.

This can be caused by a software conflict during installation. This can be solved by uninstalling Enternet 300 and closing all programs before reinstalling the Enternet 300.

*Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs. Double click on Enternet 300 to uninstall. Click "Yes" when it asks you to confirm the uninstall. Click "Yes" again when it asks if you want to reboot.

*Reboot PC a second time.

*CTRL-ALT-DEL and click on each program and end task all programs except Systray and Explorer. When you click on "End Task", the "Close Program" window will disappear and you will have to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL again to repeat the process.

*Reinstall Enternet300.

*Reboot PC.

Enternet 300 Error Message-Server Communication Error

This is never caused by the server or a sync issue its always caused by a communication problem with the server when the tcp/ip protocol is disabled or missing for the NTS PPPOE adapter.

In Win 98/ME/2000, go to Start-Run, type ASD, click Ok. If you see tcp/ip for the NTS PPPOE adapter here, put a check by it to enable it, and reboot. You should be able to connect now.

If that doesnt work, then the NTS PPPOE adapter may be missing tcp/ip. Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Network. You will see that there is no tcp/ip protocol for the NTS PPPOE adapter here. Win 95 allows a limit of 4 adapters with tcp/ip bound to it and Win 98/ME allows a limit of 6. If you have more than the limit allowed, then you will have to remove any unneccessary adapters that listed here. If you have AOL 6.0 and do not use it, then uninstall AOL 6.0 because it uses up 3 tcp/ip stacks for AOL Adapter, AOL Dial-Up Adapter, Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support). Once you have removed the excess adapters, you can add a new tcp/ip bound to the NTS PPPOE adapter by going to Add-Protocol-Add-Microsoft-TCP/IP, click Ok. When you see the NTS PPPOE adapter is bound with tcp/ip, click Ok and reboot your PC. Try and connect.

PPPoE connection disconnects after a certain time period

Check your Power Options. It could be that your computer is going into hibernate mode and will stop responding to keep alive requests. This will cause the PPPoE server to believe that you are no longer connected and force a disconnect.

Be sure to check in your BIOS as well for hibernate options.

Sync probelms caused within the home.

Things to check if you are not getting sync.

If you have not rewired your premises with a Home Run Line (a dedicated wire run from your outside wiring interface complete with filter), then you need to ensure every phone using appliance in the house is filtered. Not only phones, but fax machines, alarm systems, TV converter boxes etc.

Do not wire your DSL modem through an analog phone modem. It will not work.

Be wary of UPS surge protectors for phone lines. Some will work some won't.
