Before you install, if you are a Windows user and one of those people who isn't a computer nerd and really does not want to be, yet you really would like to help with this project, we really do recommend to start with the no-nonsense console CPU version of the client.
Read this thread where a member easily is off and running with the console version after quite a struggle with the systray version ---> Consider installing this version first.
The only thing you would want to change is to put in your chosen folding name during the first part of the install.
You can always get fancier later, but this will give you a chance to learn the basics of folding before considering other options.

Yes, and we'll all be by every Tuesday for dinner at your place. No, not really, but please feel free to come enjoy the fun and keep up with the latest on Folding@Home. We look forward to seeing you there.

If you run the FAH client, choose 4 as the team number and choose FAH as the preference, you will get regular FAH work units (WUs) with deadlines and your stats will go to the FAH Stats Page.
If you do all the above, but choose GAH as your preference, you will receive untimed WUs (no deadline) and your stats will go to the Team Helix FAH Stats Page as well. Please configure for the untimed WUs if you have a computer which is unable to meet the preferred deadlines of the timed WUs.
You can find the preferred deadlines from Stanford's Currently Running Projects page here.

While there is no requirement for individuals to join a team, there definitely are benefits to joining one. Aside from the comradery and sociability, there is the project familiarity and experience of all the members combined. Team Helix members in particular are extremely helpful with regard to just about anything you want to know about what we do, how we do it, and sometimes even why.
Additionally, Team Helix is just a great group of people, not unlike a family, doing a great thing and a great place for sharing. Just read the forum posts and you'll see.
