That's a good question and it does come up from time to time. Consider this Public Announcement from our good friend, rusdi See Profile, before doing that, please.

Yes, you can!

Although funding has ended the Genome @ Home project, at least for now, Stanford does have use for all the slower CPUs which cannot meet the regular F@H work unit preferred deadlines. The client can be configured with the F@H team number for the team of choice and, in advanced configuration, by choosing to request work units without deadlines. This will alert the assignment servers to redirect the client to be served WUs without deadlines (timeless WUS,) allowing all our slower CPUs to contribute to the science!

Just install the latest client per instructions. Be sure to say "yes" when asked if you want to configure advanced options. For this option, Request work units without deadlines (no-ref/no/yes:, choose yes as your preference. Remember! Team Helix is Team 4!

It can, and some users report that it does!

As with many things, how your particular hardware and software configuration will react, may vary. Some users report no problems using Proxomitron while others report problems. Should you experience any problems, try this solution.

When you download a work unit, you should momentarily shut down your proxy server. For Proxomitron users this is as simple as going into Tools\Internet Options\Connections\LAN Settings and unchecking 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'. When the unit has downloaded, you can recheck the box. Remember to do the same when the WU is ready to be uploaded!

It is safe to run? In a word, yes. But please, see Stanford's page for further information.

If you run a firewall, you may need to make changes to your software configuration to permit the access required by the client.

No.

The only time it could become an issue is in a computer that in not cooled properly. The program does keep the CPU busy, which generates heat. This should not be a problem as long as the CPU has the proper cooler and the case is properly ventilated.

There is a good bench mark test done by The Tech Report on the impact of the Folding client.

In the past couple of years, considerable effort has been made to try to consolidate info, guides, FAQs, etc. for the folding community as a whole where the entire community can contribute to keep all this info updated and correct. It isn't perfect ever because the program progresses rapidly and it is not easy to keep up with documenting the changes.

A post made by bruce, an admin on our community folding forum, is well thought out and could be helpful to new members of all teams. While his post is written specifically for the Folding Forum, it is good for new members to know of the resources both on that team neutral forum and linked from that forum. If you're serious about folding, please browse that site and be familiar with the help available there.

This is a link to bruce's New members: Start here post. I hope you find the info there helpful in getting started.

Of course, you're always welcome to ask any question you may have in the Helix forum. You're our valued teamie and we'll do our best to help you find what you need to fold successfully.
