2.11 Folding with Windows

·How do I add the flags using a shortcut to the client?
·How do I change from the CPU Console client to the GUI client?
·How do I change from the GUI client to the console client?
·How do I change the name of the FAH Service?
·How do I install and configure the Windows Screensaver client?
·How do I uninstall the FAH client?
·How do I use SCHEDULED TASKS to run at special times?
If you currently do not have a shortcut to the console client, one can easily be created. Just right click the console executable (FAH3Console.exe), and select Create Shortcut from the pop-up menu.

To add a flag to your console client, right click on your shortcut to FAHXconsole.exe shortcut and select Properties.

Go to the end of the line in the Target: box, add a space and then the desired switch, including the leading hyphen. If you are adding more than one switch, be sure to use a space between each switch. Click apply and then close the window.

FAH will use the flag every time you start the console using this shortcut. If you are running FAH on more than one computer, you will have to repeat this procedure for each machine.

See the FAH Wiki answer here.

For a list of flags and what they do, go to this link.

What are the current flags and what do they do?

If you are having problems with the GUI client and want to change to the console, there are certain steps required to ensure that you won't lose any work and get proper credit after you have the console client up and running.

•To ensure that your final GUI WU is sent and credited, right click on the FAH icon in your task bar.

    •Choose "Configure".

•Choose the connection tab and check "Ask before using Network".

•Click "OK" to close window. When your WU finishes, you will be notified and can then send the completed unit.

•Now you will need to un-install your GUI version by using the uninstall from the programs menu.

•One final step to verify that the GUI version is completely uninstalled is to use Run>>Regedit and migrate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE_PandeGroup_Folding@home.

This FAQ contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.

•If the key is there right click on PandeGroup and delete. Reboot before installing the console client.

The key will be recreated when you install the console client.

There isn't a difference in speed between the two if you run the GUI minimized, however most people report that they have less problems with the console client.

To set up the console client, follow the steps found here. How do I install and setup the console client?

Additional note: If you have ever had a GUI client installed on the computer, to be safe, please use the -local switch in your startup command line for any additional client installed, just to make sure the client looks for work in the correct directory.

After you have installed FAH 5 as a service , you may want to change the service name or add switches.

Here is how:

WARNING: The following steps require editing your registry, which can cause your PC to be damaged if not done properly. If that makes you nervous, stop now.

Change Service Name

1) Open your registry editor by Clicking Start Menu>Run>Type regedit>Click OK
2) Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@D:+Folding+FAH500-Console.exe

3) Double Click on the "DisplayName" key in the right column
4) Enter the new name of your choice in the value box then click OK

5) Close the registry editor, then reboot.

Add Switches

1) Open your registry editor by Clicking Start Menu>Run>Type regedit>Click OK
2) Navigate to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\FAH@D:+Folding+FAH500-Console.exe

3) Double Click on the "ImagePath" key in the right column
4) Enter your switches in the value box then click OK

5) Close the registry editor, then reboot.

End of Registry Editing

Make FAH 5 restart if it fails

1) Open the service configuration window by Clicking Start Menu>Control Panel>Performance and Maintenance>Administrative Tools>Services>Select the service and Double click it.

2) Click on the Recovery Tab

3) Make appropriate selections with the drop-downs
5) Close the service configuration window, then reboot.

We recommend that you do not use this client!!

It's slow, somewhat buggy, and unreliable. This client is only folding when the screen saver is active, whereas the other clients run in the background all the time and will not interfere with your other computer activities!

If, even after the caveats, you insist on running the screen saver version, you can find setup instructions at the Stanford site »folding.stanford.edu/winstructions.html.

Note: The new GUI client version 502 has a built-in screensaver feature. Instructions for installing that version can be found here.

Here's a HowTo FAQ section in the Folding@Home community FAH Wiki.

Note: Most of the links are to the old community forum, but I am hoping Uncle Fungus will be able to get most of the old stuff to us in a fashion which will allow us to pull up old topics.
