The BBR 2Wire forum is not operated by 2Wire, Inc. and is populated for the most part by your peers - DSL users like yourself. Many folks here lend a hand in answering other user's questions. However, 2Wire, Inc. has provided a number of officially sanctioned Technical Representatives from the 2Wire Customer Care department who will be helping out with questions related to 2Wire DSL hardware. These people have the latest knowledge and know-how to assist with your 2Wire equipment.
The present 2Wire Techs are:
jakethecat OneGreen sodagreen sumZero ColonelPanic
There are others as well who are lending a hand, however when in doubt of anyone claiming to be from 2Wire please check with the forum Moderator Aria73 or the 2Wire Techs listed above.
It is to 2Wire, Inc.’s credit that they have provided BBR users this means of problem resolution, and please feel free to leave kudos should they help you resolve an issue.
Please Note: As 2Wire, Inc. sells through service providers only, it is possible that certain upgrades and features not provided by those service providers will not be available to end users. Requests for special versions of software, updates and upgrades to enhanced features not offered by a specific service provider will not be answered. Also, please keep all correspondence here in the public forums. DO NOT IM the techs unless they request you to do so. This keeps their IM boxes from filling and keeps the helpful information in the public view where it can be searched and used to answer future questions.
Thanks! - Aria73

The 2Wire DSL modems have a very sophisticated set of troubleshooting logs and indicators. When you post a message asking for help with a 2wire product issue – such as random disconnects or other issues - you can speed up the time other volunteers here take to help by providing the following info up front-
Please provide a description of what your problem is, including things like how often or at what time of day the issues occur. Also how your system is set up- how many computers you have connected to the 2wire and how they are connected (wireless, ethernet, HPNA, etc.)
And then the relevant logs, from the Management and Diagnostic Console (MDC), to include are:
•The contents of the DSL Diagnostic page. •The contents of the Detailed Log. •If an application or firewall related question - You should include both Detailed Log entries and Event Log entries.
The Management and Diagnostic Console (MDC) is for advanced troubleshooting in the event of problems. Access it by going to http://homeportal/management (/MDC will also work in place of /management)
The DSL Diagnostic page (under Troubleshooting on the left side of the MDC) displays current data on your connection and a history of retrains.
The Detailed Log (under Advanced on the left side of the MDC) is more hardware oriented (equivalent to a unix Syslog) and is of more help to track down problems with the 2Wire itself.
The Event Log (under Troubleshooting on the left side of the MDC) is software oriented and mostly lists firewall hits and minor events with settings.
Remember the people who help here are all your peers, some professional techs, some not, most just regular BBR users, assisting when and where they can. For official support you should contact your service provider.
Note: Some service providers provide 2Wire products with the MDC locked out. In this case you will not be able to access the MDC without the password, and most service providers do not release the password. Your only recourse is to complain to the service provider you got the 2Wire from, and not 2Wire itself.

By all means, please do.
Simply click on I would like to suggest a question, and maybe also answer it, and add it to this FAQ and submit your entry. It is most helpful if you include a question and answer, but feel free to submit your question alone, if it is something that will apply to many users. Otherwise, please ask in the forum.

The 2Wire Home and Office Portals can be setup in any OS by using a web browser and surfing to the address of 172.16.0.1. (Note: Later model units default to an address of 192.168.1.254) Once there, the Setup Wizard can be started and the key code entered. Once the UserID and password are correctly entered, the router will connect to the SBC network and internet connectivity is established.

2Wire's business model is to sell their products to ISPs who in turn sell/give them to their customers. The homeportals are "branded" for each ISP. However, some generic 2Wire equipment has been known to show up on the retail market.
At one time you could buy some 2Wire products from CDW or BestBuy.
June 2006: Bestbuy seems to have 2700's »www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp···93513835
However the primary channel these days is through your ISP.

How this works depends on how your ISP gave you your IPs -- as one block of IP addresses or as separate WAN and LAN blocks. Also, the 2Wire handles public IP addresses a little different than standalone routers like Linksys, Netgear, etc. -- it actually gives the IP address to that computer instead of mapping a public IP to a private. Here's a couple instructions which should help you get the IP addresses setup:
- Open »gateway.2wire.net - Go to Home/Local Network > Advanced Settings + For one block of IPs, check "Bridge Network" and put in the subnet for your IPs (i.e. - 255.255.255.248), then save/submit settings + For a separate LAN block, check "Public Network," put in the IP address set aside for the LAN gateway, and put in the subnet for your IPs (i.e. - 255.255.255.248), then save/submit settings
The 2Wire identifies computers by MAC address instead of IP address, so you can use Address Allocation to give a public IP to a computer using DHCP. Every time that computer asks for an IP address, the 2Wire will give it the IP address you selected. If you would prefer, you can also set the IP address statically on a computer. - To use the 2Wire to set the IP addresses, go to "Address Allocation" on the right side of Home/Local Network > Advanced Settings. For each computer that should have a public IP address, select the IP you want and save/submit your settings. Just release/renew or reboot the computer afterwards to apply the new IP address. - For computers that you want to use statically assigned IP addresses, use a DHCP computer for a guide as to the correct subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS settings to assign.
At this point, the computer has the public IP, but the 2Wire Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall will still be blocking inbound access by default. ----------------

The 2Wire HomePortal has a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall that blocks unauthorized inbound connections. To allow certain connections through ports in the firewall: - Open »gateway.2wire.net - Go to Home/Local Network - For the selected computer click "Edit Firewall Settings" (non-DHCP/non-NetBIOS computers can be renamed here to make selection of the correct computer easier) - Choose "Allow individual applications" - Select the application(s) you want to forward to that computer (or create your own custom ones right below the list for each application/computer and then select them) - Click "Add" to add the selected applications for that computer - Save/Submit settings or Done
If you want all ports open, choose DMZPlus Mode instead of Allow individual applications. - For single-IP connections (most people) this will "share" the 2Wire's public IP address with the computer (IP release/renew or computer reboot required to apply the setting). All ports that have not been forwarded to another computer will be forwarded to the selected computer. - For multiple public IP address connections, only computers that have been given a public IP address can use DMZPlus Mode. Since these computers already have their "own" public IP address, they will not need to "share" the 2Wire's IP.
NOTE: Be aware that if you choose to open ports in the firewall, you may receive unauthorized/malicious access attempts. Please use a software firewall or server hardening techniques to prevent compromising of your network.
NOTE: An individual Public IP's Port can only be assigned to one computer at a time. That is you can not point the same IP & Port at 2 or more different computers at the same time. If you are hosting multiple servers/games/torrents/etc., using the same Public IP address with multiple computers, you should be using different port numbers for each.
