(back)Broadband2Go is the brand that VirginMobileUSA (VMUsa) uses for its prepaid wireless data access.

Currently VirginMobileUSA (VM) uses 3G(CDMA/EVDO Revision A) and 4G(WIMAX) for its network in the United States. VM is also using Sprint's 4G(LTE) network for phones, but has no Broadband2Go branded devices that use LTE.

VM Broadband2Go is advertised with average 3G(EVDO) downlink (download speeds from the internet to your machine) data speeds between 600 and 1400 Kbps. Uplink (upload speeds from your computer to the internet) data speeds on 3G(EVD) can reach speeds of 600 Kbps.

VM 4G(WIMAX) is being advertised as speeds of 3 - 6 mbps download. They have not listed uplink speeds on the 4G(WIMAX) network.

Like all wireless data plans speeds will vary based on the number of users connected to any individual access point (tower) and the amount of connectivity available to the access point(tower). Virgin mobile can also throttle speeds down to 256Kbps (uplink and downlink) once users reach a limit set by the plan they are on.

SprintNextel (Sprint) access points (also referred to as towers) are used for access, no roaming onto non Sprint access points is available.

Since the service uses Sprint 3G(CDMA EVDO Revision A) and the Sprint 4G(WIMAX) networks the frequency will be the same as other Sprint devices. The 3G(EVDO) devices are commonly referred to as a CDMA 1900mhz system. The 4G(WIMAX) devices are referred to as 802.16e mobile WiMax standard 2.5GHz (2.5Ghz WIMAX).

VM Broadband2Go (bb2g) service is routed differently than Sprint connection card products on the 3G(EVDO) side. Routing on the 4G(WIMAX) network is unknown at this time.

VM 3G(EVDO) bb2g services appear to be behind some sort of blind proxy and may not be able to host some services, like a web server, or a VNC server, for example. VM bb2g, like Sprint mobile broadband services, proxy all DNS requests to Sprint's DNS servers blindly. It is unclear if this is the case on the 4G(WIMAX) network.

VM 3G(EVDO) bb2g can be used to access most VPN's, however, some Cisco VPN configurations, but not all, do appear to have issues when trying to connect on the service.

      8.0 Plans

(back)There are many plans now available... and some requirements for some plans.

For a brand new account the following plans are available:

$5 plan - gives you 200MB of 3G(EVDO) and unlimited 4G(WIMAX) /1 day (24 hours)... this plan shuts off 3G(EVDO) at 200MB of usage and throttles 4G(WIMAX) at 500MB of usage. FAQ plan code: $5/200meg-3G-unlimited-4G

$35 plan - gives you 2GB of 3G(EVDO) and unlimited 4G(WIMAX) /30 days... this plan shuts off 3G(EVDO) at 2GB of usage and throttles 4G(WIMAX) at 10GB of usage to speeds of 256k/256k. FAQ plan code: $35/2gig-3G-unlimited-4G.

$55 plan - give yous 5GB of 3G(EVDO) and unlimited 4G(WIMAX) /30 days... this plan shuts off the 3G(EVDO) at 5GB of usage and throttles 4G(WIMAX) at 10GB of usage to speeds of 256k/256k. FAQ plan code: $55/5gig-3G-unlimited-4G.

If you purchased your Virgin Mobile device at Wal-Mart you will also have access to:
$20 plan - gives you 1 GB of transfer 3G(EVDO) / 30 days... you will be shut off when you reach 1 GB of transfer or 30 days pass from the time you activate your plan. No 4G(WIMAX) access is included. FAQ plan code: $20/1gig-then-terminate

( general terms of service which include the $5/$35/55/20 plans )

Some older accounts have access to one or more of these plans. They are grandfathered so if an account switches to another plan that account will loose access to the grandfathered plan. ( virgin mobile usa terms for grandfathered plans )

$10 plan - gives you 100 megs transfer 3G(EVDO) / 10 days... you will be shut off when you reach 100 megs of transfer or 10 days pass from the time you activate your plan. FAQ plan code: $10/100meg-then-terminate

$20 plan (non walmart) - gives you 500 megs transfer 3G(EVDO) / 30 days... you will be shut off when you reach 500 megs of transfer or 30 days pass from the time you activate your plan. FAQ plan code: $20/500meg-then-terminate

$50 plan - gives you unlimited access 3G(EVDO)/ 30 days... this plan throttles connection speed down to 256k/256k or lower once you reach 2.5 GB of usage. The next active plan will reset to full speed for the first 2.5GB of usage. FAQ plan code: $50/2.5gig-then-throttle

$40 plan - gives you unlimited access 3G(EVDO) / 30 days... this plan throttles connection speed down to 256k/256k or lower once you reach 5.0 GB of usage. The next active plan will reset to full speed for the first 5 GB of usage. FAQ plan code: $40/5gig-then-throttle

Note that the $10/100m, $20/500m, $50/2.5g plans are grandfathered on accounts that had the plan active prior to July 4, 2012 they act like the $40/5-gig plan below now.

The grandfathered plans are no longer available to new customers. Only customers who had the grandfathered plans have access to them. This plan will also only remain available if you never switch away from the plan and never let you account expire.

For example: If you have access to the $40/5gig-then-throttle plan, and you switch one month to the $35/2gig-3G-unlimited-4G plan... you would loose access to the $40/5gig-then-throttle plan forever on that account. Currently you do not need to have an active plan to retain it, however, accounts expire after 12 months so you would need to purchase the plan at least once a year to retain it. Virgin Mobile also added the verbiage "or until discontinued" to the TOS so they can technically cancel grandfathered plans at their discretion.

(back)The Virgin Mobile (VM) Broadband2Go (bb2g) service accepts normal Virgin Mobile Top up cards, Virgin Mobile bb2g Top up cards, and credit cards.

VM claims paypal as an available payment method, however, the online activation link doesn't appear to work. Try contacting VM customer service to see if this is possible with the bb2g product.

Top up cards can be any denomination as you can add them separately to your account to total up to the amount needed for the plan you are wanting to activate.

When using the phone service branded Top up cards the dollar amount under the giant minutes listed is the value that is applied.

For example if you wanted to activate a $50 unlimited account you could add two $25 VM Top up cards to the account and then activate the $50 unlimited account.

Credit card's can be added to the account as a payment method as well.

Most plans will simply expire after their time is up, however, you can setup an auto-pay option with a credit card that is on file.

some have problems with autopay setup... if it fails you might need to contact VM customer service to get autopay to work.

(back)The Peel 3200 is an ipod touch wifi hotspot that fits onto the back of an ipod touch (2nd and 3rd gen) and provides a wifi hotspot which is feed by Virgin Mobile Broadband 2 go.

This device uses the Sprint 3G(EVDO) network.

Only the $20/500meg-then-terminate plan is available, no other VM plans will work with this device at this time.

Will only fit the 2nd and 3rd generation of ipod touch, it will not physically fit the 4th generation of ipod touch. This device can be used as a standard hotspot (not attached to the device), however, the Mifi would give you access to all VM plans, while the Peel only gives access to the $20/500meg-then-terminate plan.
