Verizon. Should I leave my PC on and leave Verizon connected? How about the dsl modem? Should it always be on to? I was also wondering about a firewall. It's a personal choice on what you want to leave running. I definitely would not leave it on without a firewall. Verizon Online encourages the use of a personal firewall. It isn't against the TOS to make use of one. As long as your modem is well ventilated, you can leave it on 24/7. If you want to turn it off, go right ahead. If being connected to the Internet while not being around makes you nervous, then by all means disconnect or turn off your modem. All interested in the security of your broadband connection should visit the DSLR Security forum.

If you don't intend to use Netscape:
Uninstall Netscape
If, for some reason you have to use Netscape:
Set your system to "Show All Files" (open a Windows Explorer window and go to "Tools" or "View" then "Folder Options" and click on the View tab - look for "Show all files" and mark it or "Hide system files" and unmark it)then do a search for muc.dll or pmuc.dll. If it's the newer version of WinPoet (Verizon's 3.0 or greater), it should be pmuc.dll. If it is the older versions (Bell Atlantic 2.0 or 1.4) it will be muc.dll. Rename them to pmuc.old or muc.old, depending on which file you find. That will keep account setup from running whenever Netscape starts.

The Westell DGN Icon aka Westell Modem Browser is a utility that will allow you, an owner of a product and a subscriber to a service to have some gauge of the actual performance of your modem.
The utility is downloadable directly from Westell: »www.westell.com/images/downloads···stic.exe however there seem to be two "packages" of this utility. One of them will upgrade a modem to FW 06.01.02 which is required.
Along with the firmware and tranceiver revision, it will display:
a) DSL signal levels including noise margin, output power and attenuation. It will also display your "actual" ATM sync level, ie provisioning.
b) ATM Rx and Tx traffic cell count including counters for invalid and dropped cells, OAM pings (control cell count), encapsulation type, AAL PDU metrics and Ethernet frame statistics.
c) Error counters include FEC, HEC, CRC, Sync loss, Frame loss and others.
d) It will not display the maximum attainable sync on your line, only it's current provisioning, however by looking at the DSL signal levels you can get a rough idea of how your line stacks up. This utility will not replace a test kit or an EWL and isn't meant to.
All of the above is loggable to a standard ascii, comma deliniated log which is easily graphed or further processed.
------------------
Installing:
Simply connect your Westell directly to your PC's Ethernet card and execute the above "diagnostic.exe"
*Note: THIS UTIL WILL NOT FUNCTION IN ANY WAY BEHIND A ROUTER!
Once installed, don't forget to use ** CTRL-ALT-F7 ** to reveal several "hidden" tabs, the signal levels and error counters, so forth.
I strongly suggest reading the following threads before trying to install or interpret any results from this cool little program:
Main Thread ----------- »Westell DGNIcon (Modem Browser)
Some more material ------------------ »Westell Diags »Westell Diagnostic Icon »Westell Diagnostic Icon
PS Yes the program works with C90's :) Please solicit further help in the main thread. Thanks!

Customer will be provisioned at 1.5/128 or 768/128 speeds according to Verizon Online's standard loop qualification guidelines. In general, customers with loop lengths less than 12,000 ft will receive the 1.5Mb/128Kbps service; those above the threshold levels will be provisioned with the 768/128Kbps service.
Verizon Online offers DSL connection speeds up to 1.5 Mbps or 768Kbps depending on the service for which your line qualifies. In either case, this means that your initial connection to our network will be up to the maximum speed for your service (either 1.5Mb or 768Kbps). The throughput speeds (the speed you will experience when you download or upload files or visit websites) will be lower than the connection speed. There are a number of factors that influence speed, including the condition of your telephone line and the wiring inside your location, the amount of congestion on the Internet itself, and the speed of the websites or servers that you connect to on the Internet, among other factors. For all these reasons, the actual connection and throughput speeds of the service are not guaranteed.
