1). When line is active install software provided by Verizon. Then set up account/profile and so on. 2). Write down user account name and other information. 3). Come here and do the speed test. 4). Come here and run the tweaks tests. If you need help with tweaking visit the Tweaks Forum.Tweaks Forum.
Once your activation date has arrived, after 6pm, try to install the WinPoet software. If you are still getting the DSL line not active error, call BA/VIS and walk through the steps. Normally this only takes 15-20 minutes, although some techs do take longer. If you are still having trouble, what has happened is your Profile has not been created yet. They will create a ticket and escalate it up to Broadband to have them create the profile. Now, if your line becomes active, and you install the PPPoE software (WinPoet), and you are not able to connect to the Registration server, call tech support for a Manual Registration. They will have you connect to the two test accounts and make sure you can route. Once they do that you will be put on hold for a few minutes while they set up the authorization and get someone on the line to help you with the Manual Registration. BTW: If you call them before the SRD (service ready date) wanting to know why your line is not active they will tell you to wait until the SRD has come. They can't help you before that.

GTE areas of Verizon do not need PPPoe (WinPoet/Raspppoe) for their setup. This is only needed by the old BellAtlantic customers.
The only thing that needs to be done is to set the NIC (or router) for DHCP. Here's how to do it for win 95/98.(NIC)
1. Left click on the Start Button in the lower left corner 2. Left click on Settings 3. Left click on Control Panel 4. Double left click on the "Network" icon 5. Left click on the item that is your TCP/IP settings for your network card. It would look something like "TCP/IP -> Ethernet Adapter" 6. Left click on the "Properties" button 7. Select the option "Obtain an IP address automatically:" 8. You may also ignore the tabs "DNS Configuration ""Bindings", "Advanced", "WINS Configuration" and "NetBIOS." They are purely optional 9. Left click on the "OK" button twice 10. Windows should now prompt you to restart your computer, please select "Yes" to do so 11. Open browser and surf away.(Assuming your SRD has passed and you have Sync).

No, unless you are using the Temp accounts you cannot change on the fly.

When signing up for Verizon DSL, it gives you a choice of choosing your GSP Both are roughly the same performance-wise. Depends on your location. In the NY, NJ area Qwest seems to be better. In the MA, VA area Genuity.

Just called BA tech support and it will take effect immediately. Then you only need log out and back in. You are only allowed one GSP swap per day. You can obtain a temporary test password for either QWEST or Genuity from tech support. The password changes daily. "install1 " is Qwest, and "install2" is Genuity. Doing this for a few days in a row and seeing what carrier works more reliably in your region is a good idea before making the decision to switch. There is no resource to obtain the passwords other than tech support. Qwest seems to be more reliable from my region (NYC). There are also fewer hops as well. Latency seems to be a little lower with Genuity. Genuity = Verizon. Network status pages/scheduled maintenance pages are now available. If worse comes to worse, you can always switch back. Use those temporary passwords and either a program Neotrace from Neoworx or VisualRoute from Fortel to do some basic traces. This will help you make a more informed choice when switching. You can also take a look for any packet loss and have an accurate reading of ping times. These two programs are shareware, and can be used for up to 30 days without registering.

This started on October 1, 2000. All new users get an auto-generated UserId (vzexxxxx for old-BA customers and vzwxxxxx [eventually] for old-GTE customers).
Also, this was done more to streamline the registration process, and avoid mucking the databases up any further than they already were. One problem that was occurring (more pronounced as the usernames got taken) was that as more and more people were connected to the registration servers, trying to come up with unique usernames, the servers were getting overloaded with requests.

All Westell and ActionTec modems that are being shipped to customers now have a factory setting ENABLED by default known as Walled Garden. In order for you to route (or connect to the internet or surf) with these modems, Walled Garden must be turned off or disabled. For new customers this can be accomplished by completing the WBA activation website.
For the Westell 327 and 6100 Modems use »192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm.
For the Actiontec Gateway use »192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect
For Westell 6100F, Westell 6100, Westell Versalink 327W, and Westell 7500, simply visit »192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm and enter the modem’s username and password (defaul modem user name and password is “admin” and “password”.
