The BBR Wireless ISP Users Chat Forum is a place for users of Wireless ISPs to ask questions, and share information, tips, tools and experiences with setting up and maintaining your Wireless ISP connection. The following are some forum guidelines. Please help by becoming familiar with them.

•On Topic - Keep all related questions/problems in one thread. Do not post your questions regarding your problems in another person's thread unless the problem is the same. Start a new one instead.
•Need Help? - If you are having a problem with your wireless ISP service please provide as much detail as you can when posting so that forum members can make useful suggestions. Rants serving no purpose (other than to ventilate) will probably be moved to /forum/sinbin
•Need to post an Image? - If you directly link an image, limit the width to 450 pixels and in JPEG or GIF format to avoid "page stretch".
•Trolling and Flaming - When you post something calculated to insult or annoy - when it's personal - when it pertains to the user and not the topic - it won't be here for long. It's always easier to ignore those who try to lure you into a flame-fest, and it makes them look like the troll they are. Bring it to the attention of a moderator, but DO NOT respond in kind, and then seek moderator action against the poster.
•Can't Understand a Post? - Move on to another topic. Do not comment on or correct the spelling, grammar, punctuation or use of the English language in other members' posts.
•Spam/Advertisement - This forum may not be used for free advertising or spam of any kind. If you are in the Wireless ISP business your comments and help are welcome, your self-promotion is not.
•Moderator Decisions - Moderator decisions are final. If you have a question about an action of a Moderator, you may contact that mod by IM. Rude or otherwise abusive IM messages will not make your case. Posts related to moderator actions will be deleted without discussion. See the following for more information: Posting Rules.

Wireless broadband is a technology where your connection to the Internet is made by a radio link to one of your WISP's antennas. This allows WISP's to do some pretty amazing things. First, we aren't limited by cables like DSL or Cable Broadband, our connection to you passes through the air. Since WISP's aren't trying to make older technology (like television cable) work for data, we can achieve incredible speeds both from the network to you, and from you out. Wireless Broadband is an always-on connection capable of providing simultaneous mixed media (phone, fax, Internet) over the same connection with speeds that are substantially greater than a typical dial-up connection.

No! If Your wireless service is setup correctly, it will be as reliable as any other broadband connection and much more reliable than satellite.

No! Wireless and satellite are two different types of service. Satellites are 22,300 miles above the earth while the access point you would connect to is at most a few miles away.

For the most part, yes! As with any ISP, Your service may vary but wireless normally has the same latency as DSL or cable.

No! Your connection works independent of any phone system and most WISP's are an "always on" service.

Radio frequency transmissions are a form of electromagnetic signal that can pass through the air, walls, and for short distances, even you! The signal power for most equipment is significantly lower than a normal cellular or cordless phone.

In most cases, users are too far away from the base antenna to be able to receive a signal via a laptop card. Most WISP's can provide you with an inexpensive wireless access point and laptop cards you can use to connect to your broadband equipment via a router, hub or switch if their terms of service will allow it.

In most cases, Your WISP's installers will mount a small pizza box-type antenna/radio on your roof, on an exterior wall, or within your attic, and run the antenna cable inside your home. This cable connects to a subscriber unit, which is then plugged into your computer or network via an Ethernet network cable or Ethernet network cable and network hub. Alternately, a USB adapter may be used depending on the WISP. An average install takes from one to two hours.
In remote locations from the tower, your provider may need to use higher gain equipment than the norm to achieve adequate signal for the system to work properly.
