License to own and operate a computer.

I think people should have to take a basic course followed by a quick and easy exam in order to obtain a license to own and operate a computer.

The course should include some very basic and easy to understand information such as this is your monitor and this is your computer. Inside your computer you can find a CPU, hard drive and some other parts.

Followed by a quick introduction to the operating system and some basic applications. For example this is how you can find out what operating system does your computer have, the start button is in the lower left corner the systray is in the opposite lower right corner. When you click on the start button you can access all your programs also know as applications. One of those applications is a web browser and this is how you can tell what web browser you are using IE, FF, Opera, etc. Then go on about the internet links, addresses in the address bar and how that differs from the search bar, etc.

Is this too much to ask?

I think it would be a win-win situation for everyone. No disrespect intended for anyone.

Pearson/Psych Corp make the worst expensive software, RANT

Student/child assessment software to evaluate all kinds of mental disabilities, speech impairments, etc...i'm told the assessments are very good, but the software SUCKS

these people make the absolute worst software ive ever seen selling for hundreds and thousands of dollars. it's amazing how they get away with these ripoffs...the GUIs are ancient, the software barely gets updated twice a decade, and they sell the same program versions for almost 10 years. yet people still buy it for me to install!

running in a standard XP pro environment on largely identical Dell boxes. ive installed numerous versions of their software for all sorts of uses and every one is a nightmare. the last one i did took 2 hours to install from a setup folder on the local desktop. it took an hour to unpack files before it would even start the install, from a folder on the desktop? then, at 96%, it spends at least 30 minutes trying to connect to its authorization server, which never gets through the proxy, and it just sits there. eventually it times out and asks if you have a floppy disk. yea, whatever, i hit NO and then call the number to activate. and then it doesnt even run.

this is par for the course on all their products for us.

they use a launcher program that incorporates all psych corp products into one location, except some products dont like it even after an update. the launcher has an auto-updater to ensure all products are up to date, but since they release updates twice a decade why is it even necessary? Also, i havent seen a way to add proxy information to it so it cant even check for updates.

these products are designed for education support, but dont know what a proxy is??

their online support is horrid. theres no live chat, the website has gone down the last 2 times i was on it, and the site itself has no support options at all. you need to google to find their support section, which has a completely different domain name, and even then it's only a few KB articles for each product that any competent IT staff would already know. the manual for one product was a half page readme pdf file that listed minimum requirements (which date back to the mid 90's) and 2 lines describing an error with graphs or something.

anyone else familiar with this garbage software or have a better experience?

Avaya ACA cert?

Hi guys

My employer wants me to become Avaya ACA certified. My networking experience has been entirely on the data side of things rather than voice. I'm a self-taught CCNA. I'm on the Avaya Learning site but it's very confusing and hard to decipher what courses/requirements are actually needed for ACA.

Can anyone shed some light on this? How hard is it and how long does it take?

Promise VESSRAID

Hello,

I am thinking about setting up a series of back up servers in the event that the entire HP c3000 chasiss gets messed up. It doesnt have to have super fast I/Os, but i would like it to support iSCSI so i can use it with XenServer.

I had a meeting with CDW and they recommended the PROMISE VSSRAID 1840I, but i would like to get some inputs from any of you that have used the hardware or have bought something similar.

I dont have to get PROMISE, but the same solution on HP goes for over $10K, he quoted the V1840I with 16x2TB HDDs for under $8K.

This is not for primary use, it is to be used as redundancy until the primary equipment gets fixed...

So has anyone used this company..? Or do you have others similar to it..?

The machine must now be restarted.
All the data online I can find is from like 2005 when sasser was running around. I'm confident we don't have that as the server is kept fully patched.

I've run MBAM and the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool.

We had our first crash at ~7:15a and then again (as you can see above) at 12:45p. I drove over to the NOC and ran a "sfc /scannow" at uid://843138's recommendation and that returned nothing (at least according to the Event Logs) out of the ordinary. The errors are identical in both occurrences.

This is a Dell PE 2950 running Server 2003 Enterprise 32bit R2. 4 15k SAS drives in RAID5 with 1 hot spare. Dual Quad Core Xeon CPUs. This server is also the main server for our online business. I've got a warm spare I'm trying to bring up to almost boiling in case we go down again but would like to never have to exercise that option.

Thoughts?

New spam attempt or is my mail server hosed?

I run my own mail server for personal use and have gotten three spam messages that are from "system" "operator" and "automailer" all from my domain name. I have no mailboxes with those names and obviously I never sent the messages. Here are the contents of them, sans the virus attachments.

We are contacting you in regards to an unusual activity that was identified in your mailbox. As a result, your mailbox has been deactivated. To restore your mailbox, you are required to extract and run the attached mailbox utility.

Best regards, wcleveland.com technical support.

Dear user of the wcleveland.com mailing service!
We are informing you that because of the security upgrade of the mailing service your mailbox (joel@wcleveland.com) settings were changed In order to apply the new set of settings click on the following link:

Best regards, wcleveland.com Technical Support.

The last two are identical contents and the hyperlink is one that is not what it seems: http://wcleveland.com.bertdffo.eu/.....

I don't think there is anything wrong with the server, I run GFI on it so it should be spam/virus free. Is this just a phishing attempt?

Problems restoring Exchange IS

I can't seem to do brick backups but thats another problem I'll deal with in the near future.

Right now I'm trying to redirect a exchange IS to the Recovery group folder on my exchange server.

I pick the store, tell it to redirect, don't mount the store.. when I get to the final click I get a message that says

If you redirect the restore of a Microsoft Exchange 2000 or later storage group or database you also select the NO loss restore option the database may not be able to mount after the restore.

To Prevent this clear the no loss restore option or restore the storage group or database to the original location.

Restoring to the original location is not an option (the nightmare that would cause).

So here in lies my problem. The no loss option is under Exchange v5.5 of the Exchange information of the restore job.
It's cleared! But BE is being persistent and saying it's not.

I have an Exchange 2003 Server Sp2 & BE Build 7170 Sp4.

I'm at a loss what I'm missing here. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Best way to create large drive array

I have a Dell PV 220s drive array with 15 bays (14 usable if I connect it to both servers). Right now it has a full compliment of 18GB drive in it but that's not going to be enough space for what I want to do. The size drives I stick in it will ultimately depend on what array mode I use.

I have two servers being used as virtual servers running Hyper-V. I brought this drive array a while ago and haven't had a good use for it as our plans kept changing so I'd like to put it to use if at all possible. I don't see why it can't be used but you never know. What I want to do is attach it to both of my virtual servers and drop my VHD files on it for centralized storage between them. The intent being redundancy. I'd have to readjust the memory usage on them but if one server died I could fire up all the VM's on one physical server. Right now the VHD's are sitting on the local storage of each server (and only the ones that are running on that server). To do that level of redundancy now I would have to restore a backup to the other server which wouldn't be ideal.

Right now the local storage in each server is (4) 146GB 2.5" 10K SAS drives in RAID 5. I've had no issues with performance but obviously increasing performance wouldn't be a bad thing. I could just as easily get (14) 36GB 15K SCSI drives and put them all in RAID 5 (or 6) and let it go at that. I have 230GB of VHD's as they sit right now so I'd want 350+ capacity to account for increases later on. I'm wondering though if I shouldn't go for some other type of array. I've always heard good things about RAID 10 but I don't know if I can get that many drives in that kind of an array. No matter what array type I do it needs to appear as one large logical drive when done. any suggestions on how to arrange these drives?

Edit: Forgot to mention which controller I'm using. I have an HP Smart Array 6402 in one server and will be getting another. It does support RAID 6 (what they call ADG), not sure about any other types beyond the typical 0/1/5/10.
