Password Recovery

My dad died, Thursday of last week. He left a list of passwords for most of his machines, web logins, etc. Unfortunately, I've yet to find where he might have recorded the password he used to encrypt the TurboTax files he'd wrapped up in a WinZip archive. We have paper copies of everything, but, obviously, the ability to import/use the older, electronic versions would be better. Does anyone know of any *good* WinZip password recovery utilities. Obviously, I'd like free, but I can go commercial, if it actually works well. Thus far, the commercial ones I've looked at demos for, limit your brute-force attempts to 2-4 characters. Not exactly useful either for use or real evaluation/testing. So... Dunno which one's going to be worth getting. So, any suggestions would be awesome.

"I have fire wall"

So this lady at work says she's afraid she might have gotten infected with a virus from Facebook. (there's this Facebook trojan going around)

So I tell her several things to do to check her computer.

Next day she emails me: "My son said not to worry about it, we're fine, we have fire wall".

I was very busy, and can't explain in detail why "fire wall" doesn't mean she's necessarily safe in a way she'd understand, so I said "OK great." Maybe next week when I have some time I'll try to talk to her, but she's one of those who has a son who knows it all...

And just the line "we have fire wall" made me laugh in my head.

New computers coming with 32 bit Windows 7 Disks, not 64 bit

I'll Just Unplug That...

I swear users do stupid shit just to give us stories sometimes.

Part of my duties at work is to run the network, thankfully due to the small size, careful set up and relative simplicity it usually runs without drama most of the time. This despite the best efforts of a few key stupids that work here.

The other part is mainly software related and as such I am allowed to work from home every now and then, today being one.

When I work from home I lock the front panel on the servers and take the keys with me as I found that the stupids would sometimes restart them by holding the power button down (looong story...)

So today I get several frantic phone calls around the same time I notice my email connection is dead. At first she said the 'internet' was down and she didn't know why, after several minutes of trying to sort it out and then finally pressing her for details she admitted that she unplugged all of the power cords from the UPS units because she wanted to reboot the server because her computer was slow...

Windows Deployment Services And Routers

Hello I got Windows 2008 R2 and windows Deployment Server before i had with two network card and server do Nat and Dhcp and with Option for 60 work great

Now I have install 2008 R2 behind stander dlink Nat router

And was amazed that work with out configure option 60 not sure how thought i alway thought i need that tell dhcp to look at server for boot /wds but was super slow is possable to get it work at normal speed

Can Wds run right with dhcp off router that does,nt have options to configure 60? or was that why super slow transfer boot ?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771670(WS.10).aspx

There are some scenarios (particularly those that require running a DHCP server) that do not support adding custom DHCP option 60 on the same physical computer as the Windows Deployment Services server. In these circumstances, it is possible to configure the server to bind to UDP Port 67 in nonexclusive mode by passing the SO_REUSEADDR option. For more information, see Using SO_REUSEADDR and SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82387).

(Recommended) Configure your router to forward broadcast packets. All DHCP broadcasts by client computers on UDP port 67 should be forwarded directly to both the DHCP server and the Windows Deployment Services server. Also, all traffic on UDP port 4011 from the client computers to the Windows Deployment Services server should be routed appropriately (these requests direct traffic, not broadcasts, to the server).

Does this Make Sense?

can some suggested good router that will let me configure dhcp option I like keep 1 nic soltion if possable on wds server

3ware controller + ICH raid?

Hi there,

this might be better in the normal hardware support but figured I would post it here as it is a bit more advanced.

I have a Workstation that I am setting up.

It has a 3ware 4 port SATA II Raid controller with 4 drives connected to it. We also want a couple of drives on the "fake" raid controller onboard (Intel ICH)

but the second I set the ICH to raid mode I can't boot from the 3ware (which contains the OS). I set the bios to boot from it, I tried from the boot menu and no way that she wants to boot.

If I set the ICH to AHCI mode all is well but I can't use the "raid" feature.

any ideas?

driving me bananas!

Healthcare IT

ok i have been some what monitoring the whole health care IT thing since there was talk of money being authorized as part of the Obama stimulus, specifically the $19.2 billion HITECH Act. There has been alot of numbers tossed around when it comes to demand for us in that sector, so far i have heard anywhere from 50,000 to 120,000 of us needed.

From what i was reading today most community colleges may be receiving grants, which would go into programs aiming to train health IT professionals.

Does anyone here work in health care and if so what's it like working in that sector?

Stupid Help Desk Correspondence of the Week

Preface: We are an 80 person office, and part of a multi-location 300 employee network. We have several network drives, and all kinds of applications and resources.

User: I am not sure if you would be able to be of assistance, but the superior (SPCR) electronic file is gone... Would you be able to help?

Me: "Where was this file located?"

User: "It was located on the server."

Application virtualization

Hey everyone,

I'm a regular in the TekSavvy forum, but this question seems better suited here. My company has a product (desktop app) that we are trying to commercialize. We need to allow potential customers to privately evaluate our product.

The system is too complex for the evaluator to install (requires MySQL server, several GB of data - enterprise app), so we tried a dedicated server and letting them Remote Desktop into it. Of course, many companies block these ports, and their IT departments were not willing to unblock them. Also, they found RD too complicated - they want a web login.

Next, we tried installing a 2X server. This gets around the firewall issue by routing on port 80, but requires the user to auto-install a small client app. No go - the users didn't have admin privileges, and their IT dep't wasn't cooperating.

I'm kind of stuck at this point - does anyone have any experience with other application virtualization software that does not require a client app to be installed on the user's side?

Dell PowerEdge 2970 - opinions? pics?

Hi all,

I'm contemplating my first new Dell server purchase. The PE 2970 is on sale currently. Bringing my own RAM and drives.

I do have a few questions that I can't find the answers to on Dell's site:

-I'd be getting the 6x3.5" backplane option, but only ordering one drive from Dell. Will the box ship with 5 empty trays, or do I need to purchase the sleds separately?

-On that backplane, if ordered with the SAS 6/i cheap-o onboard controller, what connector type is on the controller end of that backplane? I'm considering using an Areca or 3Ware controller if I don't go with the PERC 6/i.

-Anyone have some hi-res shots of the internals of this thing?

Thanks!
