A must-read book for techs who want to go into biz for self

It's called The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber.

I am reading this book now (halfway done in less than a week) and it is breaking down why people who are workers (technicians) fail at running businesses when they try to open up a business so they won't "work" for anyone else.

I have always thought about taking my skills and starting my own IT business. However, this book is challenging me to think, rethink, check, rethink again and then act.

I see a lot of myself in this book and the mistakes I would have made by just jumping out there without actually giving more thought to the whole business process. It is not just about fixing PCs, running networks, etc but it includes other processes most "techs" don't want to learn or get involved with such as hiring, firing, marketing, advertising, customer service, account payables and receivables, balancing the books, growing and expanding the business.

If you are considering going from a 9-5 tech to opening your own business, I challenge you to read The E-Myth Revisited. There are other books based on Michael Gerber's work but believe me, what I am learning is saving me from a lot of BS, pain and heartache and also challenging me to look deeper within and be brutally honest with myself to the point it may feel uncomfortable.

What Socket Is This?

What Socket is this? I know a Xeon processor might go in it but I haven't a clue what type of Xeon or Pentium. Its a Compaq Proliant DL380 (After some research it might be a G2 but I am not sure). I did some research and there are a lot of DL380 specs out there but none seem to fit the one I have. Please refer to the pictures.

Why are people stupid about connections

Ok, so generally I don't rant and rave over how stupid some people are, but if you claim to be heavily into computers, then at least know your connection type. For instance, this guy I work with was talking to me and I asked what type of connection he had at home. Now I am used to alot of people saying "I have broadband". I am also used to asking if they have broadband and hearing "No I have cable" or "I have DSL". But this guy proceeds to tell me he has cable dsl. It was a new one to me. Oh well, just a little rant over stupid people. Have a GREAT day!

Vmware on IBM Blades

Earlier today we had a problem with one of our blades. The Bladecentre runs VMWare ESX 2.5.2. We had swapped the drives in the blade with another blade and then put them back into the original blade and put it back into the original slot. Now I can get the system to boot but the ESX is not mounting the VMFS or the VMSwap partitions. Ideas?

Passing Data between 2 seperate lans

Good Evening..
It seems I always get the interesting problems thrown my way lately..

Anyways here we go..

We have 2 lans
Lan A is municipal
Lan B is secure lan

What I need to do is install a device on the local lan that gathers data(set up by outside vendor who's responsibility ends with the box) boxes it up and ships it out over the secure lan.

I am trying to determine different and inexpensive ways of accomplishing this task. Security is a great concern as well because we need to maintain the secure lan.

Ideas?

Can I put two nics in the computer and specify 2 different default gateways?

Will I need to install a router on my municipal lan that connects to both networks and pushes traffic across both nets?

Advice please.

buying new servers....rackmount vs tower

the servers currently sit in my office right now. it is always warm in here, but when i upgrade our servers, we plan on building a closet in the back for the server rack and install an AC unit to keep it cool.

currently, we have 2 tower servers (file and exchange 2003).

i am on the fence if i want to stick with the tower setup or switch to rackmount servers.

all my switches are rackmount, the UPS's are rackmount, the DVR is rackmount...

the previous IT guy, which is friends with the owner of the company, said that he chose towers due to rackmounts running hotter, since we dont have a climate controlled environment.

suggestions?
