Here's a comparison of before and after an antenna booster installation for my alltel wireless access card. Right now I get 2-3 bars and about 80kb/s downloads avg.

Before:

2:30pm EST
After:

I have 98% signal now with 4 solid bars! Wow did it ever make a difference! My antenna is a rather cheap one from wpsantennas.com.

antenna: Franklin CDU-680 RF antenna ($39.95)
adapter: WA-1025 ($14.95)

These are for the huwaei ec228 only! These pings aren't true to the service. Pinging from my HOST PC I ping google like this:

[Troubleshooting] tethered V3m vs. UM150 modem?

We've been using a tethered Razr V3m for the past year for our imac and macbook laptop at home (in the sticks) for our "Alltel highspeed internet" connection. We bought an extra line ($10.00) plus the $26.00/mo internet deal....seemed to work okay, and speed was just okay-100-300kbps. I have a zboost and antenna on the roof. Over the course of the past month or two, it keeps disconnecting, saying: the "USB device has been unplugged" and/or "the modem has unexpectedly hungup" and/or "the connection has been terminated by the other side."
This is so frustrating-it'll disconnect all the time and I can forget about downloading any larger files. I thought a yagi antenna would help, but haven't installed it yet-stronger signal seems to equal faster speeds.

Anyway, in reading some of the posts here, I'm wondering if using a modem, like the UM150, would be better. Not sure if it works with Alltel? Maybe this would be less expensive that the whole system I have now?
Anyone else have disconnects like this?

[Troubleshooting] Slowing connection

I started using Axcess last week and it was working great until yesterday afternoon. It's downloading at about an eighth of the speed that it used to, and it's disconnecting much more frequently. It usually works at its old speed for about 10 minutes or so after restarting the computer. The average signal strength has also dropped from around 65% to 50%, but I wasn't sure if that could account for the dip in quality.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Need an alternative to Wildblue - Can Alltel do it?

I live WAY out in the sticks. I currently have Wild"laggy"Blue Sat service, and I'm really tired of >1500ms latency.

I have 2 bars of "X" Alltel service at my location (unaided) with a Blackberry 8703e.

A few questions -

Can I test the functionality of wireless internet access by tethering this phone to my laptop with a data cable? Will I have to get some new service from Alltel to try it out (currently have unlimited data plan for the blackberry)? The blackberry website lists a bunch of instructions about how to tether and use dial up networking to get connected.

Is the single X service enough to provide a usable internet connection, or will I have to wait for more advanced services in my area (ie. EVDO).

Thanks for any input. I have got to get rid of this Sat. connection. I came from high speed cable to this crap and a little part of me dies each time I use the computer now.

EVDO ordered, ditching Wildblue

Sup everyone. I'm new to this forum but i've hung out in the Wildblue forums for a long time. I've been searching for alternatives to my shoddy Wildblue service for a long time. I've contacted many of the cell phone providers that offer wireless internet but they always told me the service wasn't available in my area. Recently(monday) a friend came over with a little USB device called the Huawei EC228 alltel wireless EVDO access card. He himself has been on dial up since the dark ages and he said when he tested it out before he came over and it was AWESOME! I didn't believe him of course so I told em to bring that sh*t over!

He did. It took all of 5 mins to install, connected immedietely and I proceeded to surf the web. After visiting my favorite sites that take forever to load, I was pleasently suprised at how fast it went! I only had 2 signal bars out of the 4(57% signal) but I was growing impatient so I told em I'm firing up WoW. My main is a 70 lock on argent dawn realm and I happened to be in shat, so I immedietely joined an AV(alterac valley) battleground which is 40 vs 40 pvp. I've not done AV prior to this mind you cause I was playing on dial up. Dial up let me play all the other bg's decently, but not optimally. Now I entered AV expecting to see toons "blinking" all over the place(lagging) but I saw none. I was chillin with 37 others at the start and I was able to instantly cast my spells before the fight.

The battle has begun. I moved out to summon my epic mount.. blam. instant. I'm now running with the pack of horde not lagging one bit! Holy shizzle! Ok it works good so far, what about when combat starts? Here comes 10-20 allies! The sh*t has hit the fan now but I am casting spells and running and OMFG this is working great!!!! I've now got a wide grin on my face from ear to ear. Quick glance at the ping meter in WoW(addon one) shows me at 220ms. WOW!

We lost that AV but I won in my opinion. After that AV I quickly called up Alltel and order the same thing my buddy just got. It should be here today or tomorrow.

I only have 1 question though. It has a port on the side for an external antenna. I've tried looking up on the net what type of connection this is but haven't locked in on an answer. I currently have a linksys wrt300n wireless router with some extra antennas, even a high gain booster antenna, and was curious if these are what they refer to?

I live way out in the boonies so I was positively amazed the service worked the way it did out here. Wildblue was great at first I thought with 600ms pings being the only alternative to dial up, but since they did their traffic shaping and ping times starting at 1200ms, the service quickly fell to the depths of the toilet with a giant log coming in right behind them. I hope this new EVDO service is reliable enough to do what I want it to do. I enjoy youtube movies as much as the next guy but I will sacrifice fast download speeds for lower latency anyday... ANY DAY!

[Troubleshooting] Error 678

I've had my Alltel service for about a month now. I had wildblue before and the switch was welcomed. However, there is a problem I have now. Error 678. "the modem you are trying to dial is not responding..." blah blah. It was working 20mins ago just fine. I walk away to make breakfast, come back and alltel has disconnected. No problem, it usually auto disconnects every 12hrs, so I click connect.... dialing...... dialing.....dialing.....Error 678! Mother*&$#@!. What the hell happened? I've restarted the PC and still get the error. I have 2 bars of signal(68%) and it says rA coverage. Why has it stopped working? This happened a few days ago also, also at the same time, early in the morning (4am-7am). I've looked online and the 'fixes' don't seem to match up with what my problem is.
They talk about reinstalling windows (F that I just did a clean vista 64bit reinstall last week), uninstalling PPoE and DUN and all that jazz which seems totally rediculous. After all it was JUST WORKING 20 MINUTES AGO! WTF!

The other day when this happened I simply walked away and came back a few hours later and it connected. I love the alltel service for the pings. The speed isn't that great compared to wildblue but it's just faster in every respect except actual download speeds. I don't mind this. I'm currently on my WB writing this and I can tell a HUGE difference in performance. I dunno what happened or what to do to fix it.

*edit* 5:45am. It's getting daylight out a little and notice it's extremely foggy. I don't recall it being foggy the other time it did this, but it seems to always happen in early morning.

slow connection

I started with alltell internet service two days ago with the EC228 EVDO USB modem. My max speed so far has been 430kb. I usually show 2 bars and am constantly switching from DO to 1X. I am 1 to 2 miles from the tower. The alltell techs have only told me they may be working on the tower and have no other suggestions. Can some one offer suggestions before I cancel my service.
