Terrible signals yield better service, more news @10

I've been trying to dial in a great signal with my grid antenna and UM175 modem for a couple weeks now. I would often lock onto a good signal with -62HDRSSI/-1.0ec/lo, and 0% per. Those are the 3 values that matter the most to my understanding. Lately however this signal has not provided me the bandwidth I should be getting. For a week I've not moved the dish at all and it's stayed locked in on the signal stats listed above. Speeds have not seen over 150kb/s and that was only in a burst. Pings were erratic at best and sometimes worked consistantly enough to play a game online (we aren't talking fps, just a simple mmo even dial up can handle).

Last night I lost all throughput. Google wouldn't load and the bandwidth would NOT exceed 1.5kb/s. This of course made google take 10 seconds to load and just made general web usage unbearable. This morning I went out and moved the dish again. It is not in a better place than it was..or is it...

If you take a closer look you'll see that I'm not even connected to the 800mhz system. I somehow got connected to the 1.9ghz band. If you also notice from the picture the HDRSSI and ec/lo are absolutely horrible! That signal shouldn't even be working but from the dos window you see the pings were really good. I didn't save the download test but speeds actually hit 1.5mb and have been for a few hours. It has switched back to 800mhz band and lower rssi and noise % and the speeds are pretty much the same. How was I able to get those great speeds on a band my dish isn't even made for? Weird.

Verizon PRL & Alltel

Since Alltel & Verizon have "merged" or whatever (I'm an Alltel customer), and Verizon has a newer PRL out, I figured I'd give it a try (51143)...I have my card locked to the EVDO signal, so generally I can't use Verizon signals at all....but on QLM it showed up where I was getting a Rev A signal on a Verizon tower. Excitedly, I clicked connect, however, it prompts me that the username/password are invalid on the domain...I put in custom credentials through QLM and put in phonenumber@alltel.net/alltel for username and password, but still no luck. I was curious if there was some way we could use the Verizon towers or not, if anyone had been able to get on, and what the workaround is for it? I only ask because the tower/signal I currently use is torture and I'd love to be able to get on to that one instead. Thanks!

Also, sorry in advance for all the technicalities I butchered above, I'm not horribly tech savvy just trying to get decent internet :p

[Equipment] Is a 20 mile EVDO link possible from a 60ft tower +

We live in a rural area not serviced by DSL or cable, and satellite is a lousy option. The local phone company CenturyTel has no plans to install DSL for years, as far as I can tell.

AllTel's 1x / EVDO is technically not available directly around us. The nearest tower offering at least 1x is about 10 miles to our west, and EVDO is about 20 miles south to SW. 1x is vaguely possible on a generic cellphone at about 2 bars out of 5.

We're located under the green dot. Dark blue is EVDO, light blue is 1x:

Today I noticed that AllTel offers a USB 1x/EVDO cellular modem, the UTStarcom UM175 and more importantly I see it has an easily accessible external antenna connector on the side.

Alltel - UTStarcom UM175 USB modem - $219 / (free with plan)

WPS Antennas - External antenna for UM175, $15

http://blog.wpsantennas.com/2008/08/verizon-wireless-um175-usb-modem.html

This means that I could buy an external 800/1900 Yagi and plug it into the UM175, to extend its range capabilities:

WPS Antennas - 800MHz-2500MHz 10dBi Yagi, $240

,

We live on a farm, and we have a 60ft concrete silo with steel bands around the outside that hold the silo together. On the south side (the side that matters for this project) is a metal ladder with an open steel cage around it, for climbing to the top of the silo.

Ends of huge heavy silo hoops, at bottom of silo:

Trying to weld onto the hoops is a bad idea since they are under high stress. But I am thinking that I could probably put some small C-clamps on those huge steel bands at the top of the silo to give me a mounting platform, just off to the side of the access ladder within easy reach. Though I have no idea if there are any existing bar clamps that can work on these hoops.

Put the yagi up there, with an outdoor enclosure for a single-board-computer that has a USB port for the modem, and then run an ethernet cable down the silo to the barn, using either Power-Over-Ethernet or a separate DC power line.

There are just two more questions that remain...

- Where can I find an inexpensive single-board computer with USB, that can run something nice and boring like Windows XP and Internet Connection Sharing, and Remote Desktop to make it easy to monitor?

- WILL THIS EVEN WORK? I have no idea if EVDO cellular services are possible from 20+ miles away.

Question regarding Alltel Prl's

Im hoping someone can shed some light on an issue I am having. A few days ago, my internet service went from very good (Rev-A with 1.30 download) to horrible (1 x RTT with .23 upload). After researching around I found out about the PRLs and how they can impact your service. I tried several PRL's and I have found one that gets my service back to where it was. But every couple of days the prl keeps getting changed back to the prl that caused me the problems. Is there any way to keep this from happening? I am using a Hauwei EC168 usb device. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Atlantic Tele-Network for certain Alltel customers

I just received notification from Alltel that "Atlantic Tele-Network has entered into an agreement to become your wireless service provider".

I understand that Verizon did not buy out Alltel totally. Therefore,I suppose this means that I (my tele number)was one of the ones left out and that I will get switched to this Atlantic Tele-Network.

Reading the FAQs on the Alltel site 'https://alltel2.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/alltel2.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=9113' I am now concerned with what may transpire when the hand-off takes place. Is there anyone in this forum in the same boat as I, or does anyone have any additional info they can share?
