Decided that my 2002 Civic with 203,000 miles (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r26627054-Milestone) wasn't going to last too much longer, so I'm trading it in for a 2012 Accord 4 cyl Coupe EX-L with navigation system. I pick it up tomorrow.

The end of an era; or how I was separated from my beloved

Final stats for my car:

11 yrs, 10 months of ownership
23.02 avg mpg
11.17 avg days between fill-ups
$2.37 avg fuel cost
143,567 miles driven
cost per mile = $.24

Heading home from Portland on Sunday night, we took Hwy 14 eastbound (cause we always do). It was about 7pm, well past sunset. Dry pavement, speed limit 65, traveling a bit above that. High beams on (I did the headlight lens reconditioning and replaced both bulbs about 15k miles ago), just cooking along in almost zero traffic. I love this road because of the low traffic. I've driven this stretch many times and observed as few as twenty cars in the 96 mile trip. It's lightly traveled, just how I like it.

All of a sudden, there's a deer, making it's way across our lane of travel, heading north. Crap. Full panic brake application. Slowing, slowing, slowing, strike. Full contact in the middle/driver's side of the front. No airbag deploy, car is still running, can't see the animal, no deer shit on the window. No scraping noises from underneath, so I limp along to a wide spot. Right here, just west of the intersection:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=45.750913,-120.56639&spn=0.003107,0.006925&t=h&z=18

Call after hours service for State Farm, they try and help us get a tow truck. By using google. o.0 I just start doing the same, as it was difficult to gauge exactly where we were and explain that to a non-local person. I guessed our location using the trip meter, but I was way off. Found a company who had a truck only about fifteen miles away. He arrived, loaded the car on the deck, and took us to the closest city (Goldendale) with a collision shop. He unloaded the car, charged us $140 (a bargain, I thought), and promptly got stuck in the ruts left in an unplowed gravel lot from last week's snow fall. Tee hee.

A friend from the next town west of our location had already started heading our way, and had agreed to take us home. That's another 125 miles. She was so nice, even if I had to fold myself into her Jeep Wrangler for over two hours. We grabbed our already arranged borrowed vehicle, and headed right back to Goldendale. Had to get my subwoofer box out of the trunk. A bunch of miscellaneous stuff, two amps, two 12" 8 ohm subs, custom box. State Farm would have given me like $150 for that. No fucking way would that fly. It was worth the five more hours in the car to get that stuff. The collision center ended up pulling the deck out the dash, and then mailed it to me for a total of $31. A bargain.

Collision center calls and wakes me up at 9 am. "So sorry sir, but the damages sustained are more expensive to repair than the vehicle is likely worth." I thought that would be the case, but it was very difficult to hear, nonetheless. Very difficult to hear. I called State Farm and let them know the details. They said I would likely hear from the total loss department by the end of the week. I did.

Molly called Friday with an offer. They had to search up to 925 miles away to get an idea of my car's value. They offered me $4090 after a $100 deductible. I accepted. Check will arrive Monday at my agent's office. I get some money, they get the title.

And that's the last I'll see of my car. The title anyway. I've got another year+ of school, and we wanted the car to last until then. Oh well.

Replacement will be another Avalon. I like the 2011 version. Limited for sure, nav or not, no preference. I found a few local, all below NADA value, which is how my CU will determine how much loan we can get. Not sure why the asking price is 10% below NADA value, but that's of no concern. I think the $29k + tax is a fair price for a ten month old luxury sedan with ~22k miles, and and intact manufacturer's warranty. Plus, Toyota reliability. See above. There's another car in the Seattle are with two tone (burgundy and black) seats, with only 2300 miles. OMFG, it's awesome. $32k is still under NADA value. Fine by me.

Not sure when I'll buy the replacement, but I do know this Ford Ranger allows the doors to be locked with the key in the ignition. WTF? Plus, 16 mpg is shite. Ick.

Cambridge Crude, Liquid Electricity

Here's something we don't hear a lot about, Liquid Electricity. They say you can refuel a vehicle as fast as you can currently pump gasoline and the liquid is fully recyclable. A functional prototype will be ready next year.

quote:The future automobile will run on electricity not gasoline! This could quickly happen if you could pull up with your EV to a "gas" pump to recharge your car with a liquid electric fuel.
Cambridge Crude, the nickname of a new Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) liquid battery recharging system will let you do just that. This new liquid charge goes in as the old one goes out for re-charging by the fueling station; to be used over and over again.

Now we will wait and see if Big Oil will attempt to shut them down.

Easiest Diagnosis I Ever Performed

I'm not a mechanic, I just like cars. I like to read about them, talk about them and so on. A nice lady I work with starts chatting with me at the copier yesterday morning. "Hey Jeff, you have an Altima right?" My reply to her was "No, a Maxima. I've been buying Nissans for a while, what do you need?"

She proceeded to tell me how her regular car (Subaru) is in the shop for body work and she has a rented Altima. She explains to me how she thinks something is wrong with it: it's loud, it's bucking, she doesnt really need to use the brake to stop, and something is burning. So I explained that the CVT is a little different if you're not used to it, but she insisted something was wrong. I asked "Did you double-check to make sure the foot-applied parking break isn't on?" She said it was off. So, I offered to take a look. I'm no mechanic, but I could at least see if something is wrong or not since I'm familiar with the Nissans.

I go out to the parking lot, we get in. I put it in drive, and immediate she says "That's where it goes?". "I'm sorry? What?", I said. Long story short, for a 22 mile drive, she had it in manual mode - 1st gear - the entire way. Well, that explains the noise, the bucking, the engine braking, and the smell. No charge, I told her.

This wasn't a rant about anything, just my lovely friend driving to work in first gear and not realizing it, especially with the "1" prominently displayed on the dash. I did ask her why she had put it over into manual mode, and she replied that she didn't mean to, it's just that on her Subaru that's where she puts the gear selector so she did that here on the Nissan.

The next time you have a rented vehicle, please put it in D. :)

1992 Nissan 300ZX brake rotor reccomendation and advice.

Looking for suggestions for new front brake rotors for 1992 Nissan 300ZX front brake rotors. Nissan new OEM rotors warped too early three times according to a friend. Dealer installed aftermarket slotted cross drilled rotors, at no charge, that have lasted for 40,000 miles. Owner cannot afford replacement with same rotors. Looking for better than solid OEM rotors and have explored these options:

ATE PremiumOne Rotors

Brembo Sport Slotted Rotors
Brembo Rotors
Brembo Replacement Rotor

Power Slot Power Alloy Rotor
Power Slot Power Alloy Cryo-Treated Rotor

All thoughts positive or negative welcome. Suggestions of other brands welcome.

Thanks for your time.

Volt sales mostly to government

Just as I predicted in this thread it looks like a significant portion of Volts sold are fleet sales or sales to government agencies. Real people are simply not buying them. It's not a case of no supply, but of no demand.

Vehicles you love to hate!

But in my thread you are required to have owned one of them before you can bad mouth it!

1982 Chevy Chevette. It was my wife's car when we married in 1991. I spent the first 6 weekends of our marriage under the hood of that car trying to get a major acceleration stall out of it. Rebuilt the carb twice....all new vacuum line then a rebuilt carb and tuneup parts.....But it didnt go away till a neighbor lent me a distributor....Traded that fooker in on a 1972 Charger at a used car lot. Shoulda kept the Charger!

2001 Volkswagon Beetle. Rolling electrical problem....Nuff said!

1971 Dodge D100 pickup: 12mpg from a six cylinder....3 on the tree that would only hit second gear if the moon was aligned with juniper but NOT Venus which was fixed with a 25 cent bushing by my father the day after I sold it back too him....Bet cost me a case of good beer.

2001 Ford Focus Auto tranny. Nicknamed the Fark us cause I knew in my heart thats exactly what that car was gonna do too us.0-60mph measured in days not minutes.....small enough to touch passenger door without leaning over.... Drove it 101k miles trouble free and traded it for a Chrysler Town and Country. Shoulda kept the Focus!

2005 Chrysler Town and Country. Rolling electrical trouble (doors and instrument cluster). front brakes every 15k miles....We sit on the front porch and listen to the interior parts falling off. This is the only new vehicle I've ever rued the day I bought but we're on the 10 year plan so I'm hoping the tranny will give me alittle more time to save for its replacement.

  Theres my list, whats yours!
