extremely poor POTS, would switching to T1/VoIP be better

This is my first post here I think... my wife works for a business that is in a rural Texas, Juliff to be exact. They have POTS provided there now, I won't name the carrier out of respect for their reputation but the service is very poor quality. I am doing the IT support for the business so I have been loosely involved in the telephone issue. Additionally, they have Internet provided by SkyNet and the speed is pretty slow. I initially suggested to them to use a T1 line and VoIP, specifically, Cisco's Call Manager. I am wondering if we should revisit this; seems like going to T1 would force the carrier to finally fix the line(s) because digital is not going to stand for the static... what do you all think about this?

They really need faster Internet and they desperately need better phone service!

Regards, Gary

ISP network configuration question

Hello All,

I am looking for some insight as to what may be occurring with the internet provided by Eastern Oregon Telecom. They offer DSL, High Speed Wireless, and WiMax. I believe in the past they may have offered dialup.

Their service is proving very unreliable and has been for some time. The issue is related to the inability to maintain reasonable speed across any of their internet offerings.

For example, with their WiMax offering I get highs of 6-10 MB which is very good. The problem is that the speed is not stable. In my experience I expect the speed to vary depending on loads, etc. However, with EOT the speed will be 8 mb one second then 0 or .0x on the download. After multiple seconds to minutes the speed will bounce back up - sometimes to the previous speed and sometimes to .5 to 1 mb or so. Time of day does not seem to make a big difference - the issue manifest during the day, the evening, and even in the middle of the night. The upload speeds do not vary much at all - they are within an acceptable range of their expected speed.

As a result the connection is very unstable. I am unable to maintain a VPN tunnel for work activities. Watching any kind of video is pretty near impossible. Voice over IP is impossible.

This issue is not specific to my location. It is happening to other customers using their WiMax, High Speed Wireless, and DSL customers.

I am trying to understand if there is something that they may be doing within their network to be contributing to this. I know that at one time ISP's did some things on their dial up accounts to balance the load. Is it possible that they would still be doing something like this that is contributing to the problem.

Any insight would be appreciated as this is the first isp where the connection goes from a reasonable connection to nothing and balances back and forth.

Anyone use Comcast Metro Ethernet?

Hi Everyone,

My question is anyone that uses Comcast Metro Ethernet (or any Metro-E for that matter) what are you ping latency times like between 2 sites?

Here is a little background info:

We are looking to replace an MPLS network with Metro Ethernet circuits.

The reason we are doing this we have a certain application that is very latency sensitive that runs over our WAN.

This is a new Application for us that was part of a bigger project. We originally had Point to Point T1's where the latency was around 5ms as part of that big project we got away from those point to point circuits and rolled out an MPLS cloud as part of that project.

The issue was when we went form Point to Point to MPLS the latency jumped from 5ms to 30ms (obviously because MPLS is circuit switched so inherently there is more latency)

The App did not fair well on MPLS which was never tested because the MPLS cloud was pitched to us from the App's vendor.

The Vendor worked to fix the application so it could take the longer latency however after 4 months they have now given up and said that we could cancel our MPLS contract because they could not deliver.

During the 4 months they were working to fix it we were looking at alternatives. The one we found which we think is Metro Ethernet. We are in an area where Comcast is the only player int hat game right now.

Their price is very competitive however we are wary of the latency time because like MPLS it is circuit switched the only difference being copper vs fiber.

In our DR plan we need this type of environment for fail over purposes as a hub and spoke point to point does not work well because if you lost you site where the point to point circuits are terminated then your dead int he water.

Verizon Dedicated Internet

If you ordered a service like Verizon dedicated internet (GigE) what type of equipment would you need?

Is it as simple as Verizon running cable to the location and it being plugged into the WAN port on a router?
