Wiring problems with WHR-G125

I'm having a bit of a problem with setting up ethernet wire/connection from WHR-G125 AP down in the basement to my media center in living room. Media center being just simple Dell desktop with default/factory ethernet port that worked ok prior via short/direct connection (laptop-PC). The ethernet cable (solid type) is about 80-90ft long.

The problem is that my media PC is not able to acquire IP address - but windows shows link status as 100mbps !!
Windows also shows DL packet activity but nothing on UL.

I wish I had ethernet cable tester - but I don't ;-(

Initially, I though that I had bad ethernet connectors, so I replaced few of these (last I had), this didn't help.
Then, doubting my ability to tell difference between colors, I used some good/old/working ethernet cable, cut it in half and made the little/color coded connections one at a time :-D - again, no IP.

Then, I brought my laptop from work, tested AP's port directly via short cable in the basement - it works fine !!
so I went back upstairs and with the same laptop I re-tested the long cable AND IT WORKS !! - I got IP every time !! and my UL/DL via Comcast cable gave me 8Mb DL/2Mb UL !!

So, I reconnected that cable back to my Media center PC - and again, NO IP !! (yes, PC was configured with DHCP :-).

My old linksys switch is also not lighting up it's LED in Normal mode when connected to the same/long ethernet cable.

Can someone explain what's going on ? is 80ft too long for some etherenet devices ?

I'm thinking about going to one of the stores to get the tester, test with it and simply return it when I'm done - but :-( I rather no do that.

Client Mode

I try to find inexpensive router which can be used in client mode.

Are there any routers etc which support this or do i need to use third-party firmware projects?

There is tons of these alternative firmware projects, so i don't know which one use and what router to buy.

It can be Buffalo or other brand.

Thanks

WHR-HP-G54 or WHR-G300N?

nyone have any reviews/impressions of the WHR-G300N? Seems like there's lots of positive stuff out there for the G54, but not much on the G300N. Not the greatest reviews of the G300N on Newegg, but they all seem to be problems that could be solved with the right settings.

Am I missing something here? The G300N seems to be newer, and have N-technology over the G54, but the G54 costs more and seems to be getting all the buzz. Anything wrong with the G300N? (BTW, I don't need gigabit, so I'm not thinking about the G300NH)

Thanks guys!
