Question on setting up 2nd cable modem

I am currently using an Arris TM502G cable modem supplied by my cable provider for Internet access. I do have it hooked to a wireless router, but my wife's laptop has difficulty connecting wirelessly. I would like to set up a 2nd cable modem so my wife can connect. Is it possible to just buy the same kind of cable modem I currently have (or any other DOCSIS cable modem) and hook it up to the cable outlet, or are there some kind of settings done by my provider?

Thanks

The system would use motorola DTA's and the DCX seriec cable boxes.

The design would be node+1

it would use 1GHz aurora nodes with 1GHz motorola amps and taps.

The guide on the DCX boxes would be a choice of either Passport tru2way or Iguide A28. To accomidate vod there would be 2 channel maps one with passport vod preview (A) and one with I guide vod preview (B). No cost difference.

the SDV system would be bigband.
the vod system would be SEACHANGE.

People with cable card tvs would get a DCX HD BOX for the charge of a cable card for mpeg 4 and for 3RD party DVR users that dont support mpeg 4 HD.

3rd party DVR USERS that want 3HD would get a DVR for the price of 2 cable cards priced at (2 dollars each after 1st card per tuner.)

dvr regular price would be 12.00
HD box would be 5.00

Inexpensive Cable Internet

My son lives in Beaverton, Michigan. He would like to be able to afford getting Internet Service for his computer, for his young boys. They can't afford much, but don't want to go with Dial-Up. In fact, I don't think they can go with Dial-Up anyway. I know there are a lot of Cable ISP's out there. I think maybe far too many to research. I thought maybe you all here might have some good and inexpensive Cable Internet suggestions that I could look into for my son/grandsons. Thanks a lot for any help!

Comcast-NBC Merger: A Bad Investment for America

What do you think will happen if your cable company merged with a major broadcast network?

You don't need to be an economist to understand the lack of competition would lead to fewer choices, higher prices and less innovation.

Service Electric (Sparta) rant about missing channels

I'm on the Service Electric Sparta NJ system.

I've been having a missing channels issue for a few weeks now. I've been a subscriber since the beginning 2007 and up to now I've never really had any issue with any of my channels.

A month or so ago I started missing WPIXDT (511) and WWORDT (509). My TiVo says "searching for signal."

I use CableCARDs, but I don't think the issue is with the cards. SECTV is saying it's a cablecard issue, but I think they're full of it.

I am almost certain that it is a signal issue because I attached a clear QAM tuner (Hauppauge HVR-950Q) to test and they do pick up 509 and 511 when they are working (127-1 and 127-2 physical channels). However, when they are not working it simply does not pick up the channel.

Encrypted channels will ALWAYS say "encrypted" but will read full signal. My signal meter on the clear QAM tuner is not getting any signal which leads me to think that it is a signal issue.

I called to complain and they were very argumentative and rude, telling me that "we scramble all channels and the cablecard isn't decoding your channels, we know about the cablecard problem." Including broadcast HD channels? Are they kidding me?

That's NOT true and I know it. WWOR and WPIX are BROADCAST channels in this DMA, which means that they are usually unencrypted. FCC rules say that broadcast channels can't be significantly degraded, therefore most cable providers send them unencrypted. They said that those channels are not broadcast channels and they scramble them...

What? These guys don't even know their own cable system!

I asked if they could send a tech to diagnose the issue, and they said there would be a $26 charge if the tech found no issues. I told them no because the issue is intermittent and what if the tech comes out and finds NO issues and then when he is gone the issues return. I don't want to blow $26 on what might be nothing.

This also appears to be on my local node as others in different areas aren't having the same issue.

My next step is the NJ BPU and the FCC if they don't get this resolved, and ultimately DirecTV if they keep this up.

Advice on setting up a system for a senior

Hi All,

My wifes mom is 80 and has short term memory loss. We purchased a LG TV (LF11) this weekend and got the Motorola DCX 3200R digital converter box from Metrocast in NH. (http://www.nwtel.ca/media/documents/tv/DCX3200_Userguide.pdf).

She has basic extended cable which are the nonHD 3 - 77 and then some HD channels in the 700's. We have a Seniors Remote Control that has a fewer number of keys than a regular remote.

The biggest problem we are facing is her ability to switch over to the DVD player. In order to do that she needs to use the TV remote to select the input source and that is so different than her old TV where she just needed to hit the source button and it would switch over to the DVD player. Now there are a number of sources to choose from including some disabled sources. I have named the sources as DVD and CABLE BOX to make it a little clearer but it is still confusing.

My question is: Can we buy a replacement box for her Motorola converter box that will allow us to run the DVD player through it and use the converter box to select the source input? Can a cable card help us out with this situation?

I have done a lot of reading and am still a bit confused.

If anyone can help or has experience in helping a senior out with this new technology I would greatly appreciate any input.

Thank You

Blue Ridge Cable "unlimited" bandwidth

I have a 15/2 package with Blue Ridge Cable here in Stroudsburg, PA. They cap you at 50/35 with that package but only meter your bandwidth during the peak hours of 5PM - 1AM. The woman told me on the phone that the off-peak hours are "unlimited"...anyone know if that's really true?

I guess I'll find out because for January I stayed under the monthly cap at 35GB but used 160GB off-peak. 2 days into February and I'm up to 4GB peak and 96GB off-peak.

Just checking my email everyday waiting for a warning. I wish companies would really mean "unlimited" when they say unlimited.

Splitting problems with cable modem

I recently purchased a splitter for my cable line so I could have one line go to my TV and another to my cable modem. The setup worked great for a couple days, but I've been been running into one really annoying problem.

Lately, whenever I try to watch a movie over Netflix on my Xbox 360, the cable modem will start freaking out. The movie will play fine for a few minutes, and then the cable light on the modem goes off, then starts to blink after a couple of seconds, and finally goes solid after about a minute. It will do this over and over again until I stop watching the movie. This only started happening a couple of days ago. When I first split the connection, the videos streamed really well, and then this started happening.

This is the only problem I've had with this setup. The cable TV works fine, and the Internet works fine as well. The splitter I purchased was one of those cheap Radioshack ones, and I think that might be the problem. The ISP I use is Roadrunner through Time Warner Cable, if that's any help.

Any ideas?

What is this?

What the heck is this?

My cable company went all digital several years ago, long before the digital TV thing and they do not carry any analog channels at all. Well, almost. Just out of curiosity I plugged the coax directly to the TV and searched all channels. I got this on channel 62 which is the only analog channel carrying anything on my cable system. The graphic and the numbers under amplitude and above right change constantly. What you see in the picture is pretty much what you get on the screen so don't ask what it says where it looks like faint gray text because it is illegible. This was shot from a 32-inch LCD TV.

Cable Internet Node Question

The last cable provider I had provided me with 1.5 Mbps service, but because the speed of the connection took a consistent nosedive (probably due to Node-Saturation?) every evening I switched to DSL. Well, go figure, the DSL service in my area is pretty terrible as well.

So--and I can't believe I'm contemplating this--I'm thinking about switching back to my previous Cable provider. I was thinking about opting for the 7 Mbps service instead of the 1.5 Mpbs service, but I'm not sure if this will make any difference. I have a couple of questions that would inform my choice on the matter:

Do different speeds share the same node?

Would node-saturation cause a higher speed to drop to the same Mbps as a lower speed?

Are the different tiers of service routed through different channels or something? And therefore don't affect each other?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
