Service Electric Cablevision - Part #2

Since the original SECV thread is too old - starting this one up.

I noticed on www.secv.com this week that it appears they acquired the TV system in Mahanoy City - and will be working on integrating it into the overall SECV network servicing Sunbury, Birdsboro, and Hazelton to bring it in line with offerings.

Kinda cool to see SECV expanding its footprint and offerings HD channels above and beyond those offered by Verizon FIOS.

Service Electric LV

This post is about the internet packages on Service Electric Lehigh Valley. Why is Service electrics highest tier at 10Mbps while their competitor in some areas with RCN is way over their highest tier at 15, 25 and 60Mbps?

Is it because Service Electric knows that in areas that it shares territory with RCN is a relatively small subscriber base?

I have read others post on here that the other affiliates of service electric have upgraded their networks to the new DOCSIS 3.0. Doesn't seem like they are planning to upgrade Lehigh Valley anytime soon.

I thought that SEC originated in LV or Manahoy City so why would SEC LV be the last to be upgraded to the faster D3?

Update on the SECV Mahanoy City system

It looks like the transition is going to finally happen. The date set is February 29th.

But first a little history behind this. I want to correct the post above me as John Walson started in Mahanoy City in the 1940s. Also what is not known is his brother and sisters also had a cable company in the Danville area called CATV Services. Rosalie also purchased this system in February of 2011. CATV probably will be rolled into the Sunbury System.
http://www.catvservice.com/

The sale of the Mahanoy City system was in the works for about 4 years. We got an indication that Edward was going to sell in about 2008 when he was asked if he would sell the system in an interveiw on WVIA. He danced around the answer but did not say no.
The second tip off was when they rolled out the 30 meg internet in Sparta and Wilkes Barre but not in the Mahanoy City system. I think that that was in 2009.
I knew of the sale in August of 2010 but it was not known what system would go to John and Rosalie. Ironically the last channel we got in the Mahanoy City system was ION HD in July of 2010.

The sale was made official in January of 2011 and up until a few weeks ago they did not inform the customers that the company changed hands. The only indication was they finally changed the name on our bill in august of last year. The only thing that happened so far was they removed TVG channel 120 from our line up in October, moved FMC to channel 222 from analog 44 in november, and eliminated the FM radio service in the second week of December.

Most of the activity in 2011 was Cable Services did sweep tests on the entire Mahanoy system and repaired and replaced a lot of damaged lines and hardware. They were in my home town of
Frackville all of October.

Last Tuesday, January 31st, We received a packet from SECV about the changes to our system. As mentioned this will happen on the 29th of February. On that day Mahanoy City will be moved out of the Wilkes Barre headend and moved to the Hazleton headend.
This is what changes on that day:
Billing Impacts:

Billing Statement, Online Bill Pay, Packages and Pricing

Channel Lineups:
The lineup will change to closely match Hazletons and those who are receiving their channels in the clear will have to rescan for the channels.
There will be about 65 analog channels yet and we will not get an increase in HD channels. In fact I will lose some HD channels and gain a couple of new ones.
I will lose all the Philly HD channels, Wealth HD, Travel HD, Science HD, and Planet Green HD. I will gain WPIX HD, ABC Family HD, Cartoon HD, Lifetime HD, TruTV HD, and PBS Kids Sprout HD.
Also for me since I have all the channels with triple play my internet speed will increase from 6 meg to 20 meg.
The only thing I can not get an answer on is How they will handle my cablecards since I own them and TV Guide on Screen data. Also since I have two cablecard tv and no boxes they are not sure which package they will put me in. I might end up with a HD DVR at no extra cost since that is the closest package to my cuurent one. The HD DVR they are now using is the Pace RNG 200 with a 500 Gb hard drive.

IPG impacts:
We will go from the Rovi passport guide to the Rovi I Guide and all recordings and settings on the DVRs will be wiped out.

Here is what we will be getting in the very near future:
Over 100 HD channels, Wideband 50, Caller ID on TV (possibly in march), IOS/Android/Windows Mobile Apllications, And 3D TV.

Here is what they have on SECV.com for Mahanoy City currently:
http://www.secv.com/mahanoy/index_mah.html
http://www.secv.com/cdocs/rate_card_mah.pdf
http://www.secv.com/cdocs/channel_mah.pdf
On the 29th we will begin to look like Hazleton:

NOTE:
I started a new thread by accident as I am new to this forum. I reposted this in the Service Electric Cablevision-Part#2 thread. Reply to the post in that thread as I will see how to delete this thread.

Old A/B cable systems (dual Cable)

When I moved to Springfield, MA in 2002, I first got to a hotel room and noticed that there were two wires CATV wires coming out of the wall. Then I turned on the TV and quickly figured out that you had to use an A/B Switch to switch between the two cable lines and then you had to tune the TV to a corresponding channel. If I remember correctly, I think the Weather Channel was 32A and Great American Country was 47B. When we finally moved into our new house, we had the cable installed and we opted for converters, which took the A/B Switch out of the equation because it would switch between the A and B cable lines automatically. So then TWC (32A) would just become 32 on the converter and GAC (47B) would become 147 so I think the B side channels would add a 1 before the number. The cable provider at the time was AT&T Broadband and they sold to Comcast. The reason I posted this in the general cable forum is this is regarding CATV technology and not about a specific provider. Then the towards the end of the year, the cable company rebuilt their cable plant and put in a state of the art single cable system. The old A/B cable system was 100 percent analog SD channels, with no support for cable modem service, digital cable, or digital voice (I don't think any providers were offering VoIP service back in 2002). The house I left behind in Iowa was served by Mediacom had Cable Modem service and digital cable and the system was the original system that Cox (system was sold to TCI, then AT&T Broadband and then Mediacom) had installed back in the early '80s.

Several questions I have about such system:

1. What were the advantages of a dual cable system back when they were first installed.
2. Why did they have to rebuild the Springfield Dual Cable system to support Cable Modem/Digital Cable/Digital Voice while Mediacom in Iowa can do such with the original single cable system that was installed around the same time as the Springfield Dual cable system.
3. Are there any Dual Cable systems that are still in use (and do they support next generation services such as HSI/HDTV/VoIP.

While I support the rebuilding of the Springfield system, just think of the bandwidth that could be had with two cable lines running through town, especially if they used the A cable for video/HDTV and the B cable for Voice/Data service. Then that would be the answer to bandwidth constraints.

The current provider now has a bandwidth issue as they have completely shut off analog cable (including basic) and they are eying switched digital video (which would be an issue with my TiVo boxes).

Dual cable systems = Twice the bandwidth :D

If they would have upgraded the dual cable system to support HSI, there would be enough bandwidth available that we could have uncapped HSI service.

This city is serviced by Comcast, Timer Warner and maybe a local provider.

Is there anyway I could get a map showing each companies service area for Greenfield? Or is this one of those rare cases where you can pick your own company?

Which companies just have limited service? Broadcast stations only with maybe a couple of other cable station like WGN. The cost for that area if you know.
