CRTC 2013-80 Optional Upstream Speeds, DSL Modem Cert

Consultation:
"Review of outstanding wholesale high-speed access service issues related to interface rates, optional upstream speed rates, and modem certification requirements"
http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2013/2013-80.htm

Mandatory filing of whether incumbents offer 'optional' speeds that could be tariffed, ie, non-ftth:
https://services.crtc.gc.ca/pub/ListeInterventionList/Default-Defaut.aspx?en=2013-80&dt=ar&lang=e

Nobody but Rogers offers 'optional' speed packages they aren't offering to TPIA/GAS. Rogers' offering was a 'promotion'.

Today (Mar 25) is deadline for interventions on the 3 topics covered in the Consultation. Comments deadline is April 2nd.

TY to JF for forwarding everything.
In order above:
Primus
Vaxination (JF)
CNOC - Some really great points
Bell Companies - reserves the right to post on upstream speeds by Apr 2nd

cheap voip service - magicjack? nettalk?

I am looking to drop my home phone line but port my number to a magicjack/nettalk type service. Anyone use either? I know someone that has a magicjack in Newfoundland and he is happy with it, however I read some reviews that were less than stellar. Didn't find much about nettalk other than that it was "better than magicjack" by a few reviewers. I have talked to said NLer over his magicjack and I didn't note anything unuseable about it.

I looked at voip.ms as well but it seems I have to maintain my own ATA and I don't really feel like going that route.

Opinions?

Pre-paid Mobile broadband Whistler BC - options

Hi all. Currently in rural Australia and will be spending 4 months in Whistler BC, Jan - Apr 2014. Currently researching affordable options to stay wired. Current Aussie provider TELSTRA offers international roaming however prices are horrendous.
http://www.telstra.com.au/internet/mobile-broadband/prepaid/rates/#tab-Prices-while-Overseas
Keen to run two devices while I'm in BC (I) iPhone5 - unlocked (II) mac pro. I plan to hover free wireless hotspots while I'm in Whistler but are keen to be independent and are interested in some advice on options for text/data (2GB/month) and minimal voice/month. Would ideally have tether capacity to use as mobile hotspot. Current usage is in line with Telstra plan limits which skins me for $80/month.
http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/mobile-plans/every-day-connect-byo/#tab-plan-60
I'm hoping to get a Canada option and keep costs between $50 - $80/month. Hope I'm not being delirious.

Mobilicity - SOLD! .....to Telus

Telus to acquire upstart carrier Mobilicity for $380-million

said by the story :Telus Corp. has struck a deal to acquire upstart carrier Mobilicity for $380-million.

Mobilicity, which is legally known as Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises Holdings Inc., announced the “arrangement agreement” Thursday morning, saying the purchase price was subject to a working capital adjustment. And so the great buy up starts, as incumbents snap up the upstarts. Competition? We don't need no steekin' competition!

Vmedia so called tech support

:mad:I posted when my services started with Vmedia on May 7th and gave a quick review. Here is an update:
I signed up for the 48/4 but ended up with 28/1 as I was in one of the areas that had not been upgraded. I was getting close to advertised speeds and connection was stable. Around the 15th I was switched to 48/4 as upgrades had been completed. My download speed went sharply down and I ended up with about 17/4. I immediately contacted tech support and was told they were looking into it. It's now a week later and repeated requests including contacting George have fallen on deaf ears. I was able to chat with tech support on their website and was told they are still looking into it and would call me later. I jumped on Vmedia when they started and expected some hiccups but I must say I am beginning to have doubts. I would imagine that after a week of looking into it there would be something to report. Sad to say I am not impressed.

Looking for a new ISP - Mississauga

Hi there,

I've been a rogers customer for the past i don't know about 13+ years and I've gotten to the point where the bandwidth cap is way too low. At the moment my plan is express $51.99 + 5 + extra for modem rental. My speed is 25 Mbps with a bandwidth of 100 GB. It is a challenge for me keep my bandwidth below the cap without going over each month and Dad getting pissed at me. Just watching videos on Youtube on HD and uploading is getting me around 10 + GB per day and that's not including the ton of games i have on steam. So i been doing research and came upon this forums and wanted to know your opinions guys? Which ISP should i go for?

Distributel vs. Acanac vs. Start communications

Hello, I signed up on this board because of how knowledgeable the members appear to be, and I was hoping you'd be able to help me decide on a new ISP. I live in Windsor,On and I am currently with Cogeco, paying about $70 for their turbo 20 package with 20 down 2 up and a 80 gb cap. I have decided to ditch Cogeco and have found distributel, acanac, and start communications all offering 30 down and 2 up approx., Start seems to have the most favourable reviews and best customer service but unlike the others has a 200 gb bandwidth limit which I find insufficient. I am hoping to find out out which ISP you rate the highest overall in the Windsor area to aid me in my decision.

Acanac SMS Support and Sales

Over the last several years Acanac has not had the best reputation in terms of support. In order to improve this we have been on a hiring spree.

For example we have been able to reduce our call wait times during the morning shift to 27.9 s.

Overall 96.5% ans / 3.5% unans

and

Average initial position 1.2
Min initial position 1
Max initial position 5

Over the next 2 months we hope to do the same to our night shift

In addition to the increased levels of support and sales agents we have also introduced SMS support and sales. If you just have a simple question and prefer not to wait on the line we can be reached at

SMS support and sales number 647-694-2342

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Lawful Access articles - collection

Just in the same way as we have a thread on articles revolving around CRTC matters, the whole issue of lawful access legislation, internet privacy, warrantless searches, etc... all have, or will have, an impact on all Canadian internet users.

I'd like this thread to contain links to articles revolving around these issues. It may help those of us who value privacy and freedom in our communications with MP's this fall come the introduction of the 'crime' bill.

-------------------------------------

Pushing the limits of state surveillance
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/lawrence-martin/pushing-the-limits-of-state-surveillance/article2130692/

On the question of surveillance and reduced civil liberties, the latest Ottawa measure is what is termed “lawful access” legislation. This will compel Internet service providers to disclose customer information to authorities without a court order. In other words – blunter words – law enforcement agencies will have a freer hand in spying on the private lives of Canadians.

When he was public safety minister, Stockwell Day, now retired from politics, was opposed to going this route. When the question of handing police these powers arose, he stated that “we are not in any way, shape or form wanting extra powers for police to pursue [information online] without warrants.”

While having to get a court order might make some police investigations more difficult, Mr. Day correctly held to the view that the citizen’s right to privacy was paramount. That all changed, and now the expansion of intrusive state power is set for passage as part of the Conservatives’ omnibus law and order legislation.

Warning about Cable Gator in Toronto area

Came across http://www.cablegator.com/ on an ISP review form, they offered a great rate for business cable internet in Toronto. Before signing up I confirmed that service was available at my office and confirmed when they would be able to connect the service. I signed up, paid a $100 deposit, was told my service would be activated on April 4 2013. Day came and went, no one came out to connect us. Contacted the sub contractor they quoted who had no idea what I was talking about and realized the instal request was bogus. I contacted Cable Gators "president", named John MacArthur, who told me he will not return my deposit because I am cancelling before the install. I spoke to Rogers wholesale who verified that they have no record of this company, nor do they share lines with them. Cable gator has now removed the "business" section from their website. They still refuse to refund my deposit claiming they don't have to and that there is nothing I can do. I have since found out there are people all over the east coast who have been hit with this. Just a heads up if anyone else was thinking of signing up with them, be warned.
