SpeedTouch 516 owners please read

I'm considering getting the infamous 516V6 but could someone already using it please do me a favour and do some continuous pings of your ISP's default gateway then report the results?

I'm currently using an old Cayman 3546 modem but it's one of the few modems I've encountered which could constantly ping the default gateway in the steady 6-8ms range when there are no other transfers on the line.

I've had the 2Wire 2700G and it lagged badly, about 30ms.

I also tried another modem which used the same broadcom chipset as the ST 516 but it also lagged, about 15ms.

Please report the ping times of your ISP's default gateways. For example:

206.248.154.103 for teksavvy
207.136.64.7 for look.ca
64.230.197.191 for bell

etc etc

I posted this in the TekSavvy forums but only got 2 useful replies :(

Thanks in advance :)

Hi everybody!
Im new here and right now writing from a library in Toronto.
And yeah this is not great.

Im looking for an internet solution. Im gonna live in an apartment for the next year at least that has ONLY Rogers Cable. So besides that do u think I have any other options with other companies??

And what can u tell me about Rogers? I heard a lot of bad things about it. Caps to 60 GB, throttles to 5-10 kB/s...

Thanx

SpeedTouch 516 Tweaking :)

Time for some Researching and Playing (trial and error)

Download
http://www.2cent.de/dmt/st7/dmt.zip

If you downloaded the new firmware this wont work.

open it up.
Very nice piece of software, better than Alcatool.

1)
if you want to monitor your line stability, click on GainQ2 and click Start on SNR-Minitor Interval. After a while you will see a white line going threw the graph. I Dont really know how much it should go up and down but the less the better i guess.

2)
Go to special Misc option and enable the hidden 4 and 5th tabs.
I've noticed if i change the Target Noise Margin and hit apply / resync
it wont work.
If you click Option 2 and then change the Target Noise Margin it allows you to apply/resync and it changes.

Guys that don't get the full 5megabit or attainable is close to 100% can you play with it and post your results?

I am getting around 70% and when I set it to minimum I get 98% 5056 sync. So going up should allow you to increase sync but it will be less stable.

3)
I am not sure what Channel Characteristic. But it shows you an estimated loop length which is pretty cool.
Post your results :)

Is there any store in Kitchener\Waterloo\Guelph\Cambridge to carry this modem?

Would you recommend any other model from Thomson SpeedTouch? If yes, why?

If not which online store would you recommend to get it?

What is the usual price of this product?

Would you recommend it? How does this modem work with Linksys WRT54GS router?

Thank you,
D

640 Kbps = Interleaved?

Hi everyone,

I often read that an UpStream speed of 640 Kbps implies
having been put on Interleaved mode but now i read from
Guspaz and HiVolt that it is possible to be on FastPath
while the UpStream speed is 640 Kbps. Will anyone else
care to comment on this? I often asked about profiles
like 4032/512 Kbps FastPath, etc., i even recall being
told that Bell doesn't do such tweaking so which is it?

I heard that the unlimited cable service will soon be changed to a monthly limited..
I was kind of turned off when I heard that since the only reason I am paying 80$ of internet a month is because its UNLIMITED.

Im not asking to download 800GB a month but..... whats the limit going to be?

Speedtouch Home -- good enough for heavy 5mpbs traffic?

7 years ago I was on a 1.5mbps line with VIF Internet using an Alcatel Speedtouch Home modem, that I stil have. Then I moved and lost ADSL access.

Back to 2008, I just moved where ADSL is available and I want to get 5mbps service from Techsavvy or Acanac.

I'm kinda on a budget so I'd like to use the Speedtouch Home again, is it good enough for heavy 5mbps usage, like torrents? I'm just wondering cause it's pretty old technology, maybe there are modems outhere that could handle the load better?
