TTC Suicide and Suicide Attempt Numbers Released...

said by www.ttc.com :The Toronto Transit Commission has been ordered to release subway suicide statistics from 1998 to 2007 under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. A local media outlet made a request to the TTC one year ago for statistics related to the number of people who take their lives annually on the subway. The TTC denied that request citing health and safety concerns, and the contagion, or copycat, effect suicide reporting may pose, particularly as it relates to the method of suicide. On appeal, the IPC ordered the statistics released.

The TTC has complied with that order and is now making those statistics available to the public. Below, are subway suicide incidents and attempts from 1998 to 2007.

Click here for the rest of the story and numbers: http://www3.ttc.ca/News/2009/November/26_11_09_suicide_statistics_.jsp

I'm honestly surprised with those numbers... they are lower than what I predicted they would be before seeing the actual numbers myself. There's really nothing you can do to prevent a suicide (I'm speaking in terms of someone being on the platform of a subway station) because they are in control of their own body and life, and to strangers who don't know them, it could be extremely difficult to prevent if the person decides to jump at the last second as a subway is rolling in... TTC says they have training to try and prevent this from happening, but looking at those numbers, over the past 11 years, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference, which proves my point more.

The only people who can prevent a suicide are the people close to the person, who may see some noticeable and negative trends in their life. However, in a lot of cases, I wouldn't be surprised if the suicide is a complete shocker to others who know the individual, so it's a very hard act to prevent in a subway station with so little time to react.

Dr. Tim Ball On the Significance of the CRU Hacked Documents

I'm not sure why CBC or any other Canadian news station didn't have this story but I am sure others will find it interesting.

Corbett Report
November 23, 2009

Retired climatologist Dr. Tim Ball joins us to discuss the significance of the recently leaked emails and documents from the Climate Research Unit at East Anglia University which expose deceit, duplicity and collusion between climate researchers to maintain the fraud of the manmade global warming theory.

Wanted a CD player, got an iTouch

Technology has outpaced my wife's wants.

She wants to bring a CD player to the hospital to play some music while she is in labour. The problem is... the only CD players around now are large and bulky... and don't take batteries!

After much discussing, after all a CD player was $25... we ended up with an 8GB iTouch and a set of Logitech speakers.

So... what can I do with this interesting new toy?

Kids want to play Warhawk on 2 tv's/PS3's....

Oldest boy's friend is coming for a sleepover this weekend and will be bringing his PS3. We have a PS3 too and plenty of tv's. ;) Problem is, we have the 1 copy of Warhawk and I presume each PS3 needs the game in it so they can play vs each other on different tv's and not have the split screen thing going on. Here's my question:

1. Is a few hours learning time adequate to rip our copy of Warhawk to put into the friend's PS3? Basically, I got until Saturday to get this done. :o

2. What software do you recommend (only dumbass friendly please :D ).

3. Is it even possible to rip these blu-ray games with a PC?

Be gentle, big daddy doesn't play (without kids) or rip games etc... just trying to make 'em have fun.

Thanks for any help! :)

[Serious] Official Toronto Blue Jays Thread

Surely there are some of you brave enough to admit you love baseball, and that 'hockey' isn't always where it is at. (Well, certainly not the Stanley Cup....not in Canada anyway)

Looks like the Jays *aren't* going to have a great season. Not that I am writing them off...JP (Just Prospects) Ricky Retardi hasn't been a great GM for this team.

We'll see...

Bank check holding period?

I just found this really strange with BMO.

I was running short on money a few days before being paid, so I had a check laying around for $1,000.

Sunday: Account balance: $100
Sunday: Deposit check in machine of $1,000, withdrawl $300
Wednesday: Received call from bank saying check was returned
Thursday: Pay from work deposited: $1,950

I just logged on and found my available balance to be $0.00

I called them up, they said the amount for the check is on hold. I told them not only have I received notification the check was returned, but my pay from work more than covers the amount.
Best thing they can do and have done was release my pay minus $1,000.
IF the check was already bounced doesn't that mean it was returned already? Why would they keep a hold for the whole $1,000?
Something here doesn't add up.

If it matters the check was from my sister that she gave me a while ago. She told me not to cash it because she closed that bank account and she would give me cash when she returns from a business trip. I had forgotten she said that at the time.

Child Porn Laws - The Traci Lords Argument

No doubt - everyone has been paying attention to the current gov't plans to change Child porn laws.

Feel free to read up:

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/11/24/isp-mandatory-child-pornography.html?ref=rss

http://www.sexbombsburgers.com/2009/11/child-porn-shouldnt-police-do-policing.html

Here's the thing - I was born in 1975.

What that means is that when I was going through puberty, Traci Lords was the queen of porn.

For those oblivious to her story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traci_Lords

Traci is 7 years my senior, and I can assure you, not once did it ever cross my mind as to how old she really was. In fact, it was only a few years ago that I found out about the age scandal. Gotta love the lack of information in the pre-internet age!

In any case - that porn is way long gone. I am strongly against child porn - this goes without question. But I must admit - From a nostalgic point of view, I am curious to see it again. This does not stem from the desire to see an underage girl do pornography - the fact is - I obviously wanked to this for very different reasons.

So the question is - does the desire to watch this particular "porn of my youth" make me a pedo?

Once again - to be clear - I'm not into child porn! I don't look for it, I don't want it, and I do believe those involved should be hunted. I'm not on the hunt for her movies.

Anyways - just curious as to what people think of this...

[Rant] Upgrading HW Sucks (new mobo: no FD, no PS/2)

Better is the enemy of good enough.

New mobo has no FD header (supports USB well though). Thing is I have oodles of spare normal FD's. Didn't even think to verify a mobo has FD support - just took it for granted. (e.g. My linux router uses FD for config storage {for write-protection feature}).

And missing a PS/2 port (has only one). Mouse or KB via PS/2, I pick, but not both. Thing is my 8-way KVM setup is PS/2 based. Tried various PS/2->USB adapters, they range from really suck to kinda suck - none are 100% reliable.

Nobody makes/sells a internal-form-factor USB floppy drive - all are external.

Here's my idea for what's missing from 'the marketplace' tho - a PCI card that has 'legacy' ports for these new mobos:
- externally exposed: 1 * PS/2, 1 * serial, maybe LPT
- internally exposed: IDE header, FD header, 2*USB ('normal' external connectors tho), 2 * USB (headers, like on mobos)

Sort of one of those ole multi-IO cards from ISA-mobo days.

Sheesh. PS/2 ports were good enough. Floppy drives as well.

I want FoxPro back too.

Flu Pandemic ? What Flu Pandemic ?

This is what FEAR will do... :uhh:
You most likely won't see this on the CBC

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/pandemic-what-flu-pandemic-1817715.html

Tuesday, 10 November 2009

The 2009 swine flu pandemic may turn out to be the weakest in history. It is spreading more slowly than expected and the latest figures show a flattening, or even a dip, in new infections. It is mild in most people but severe in a few and, while it readily infects children, it appears to spare the elderly. With the vaccine being rolled out, its impact should be further curbed.

Britain's Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, published a worst-case scenario suggesting the country should plan for up to 65,000 deaths. That planning assumption has since been revised downwards twice. In September the "worst case" was cut to 19,000 deaths, and in October it was cut again to 1,000 deaths. This compares with an average annual toll of 4,000 to 8,000 deaths from seasonal winter flu.

So far in the UK, 154 people have died from the virus

Dr Laurence Buckman, chairman of the British Medical Association's GPs committee said: "The original government masterplan was for a maximum of 250,000 dead. But that was based on avian flu. It became clear that swine flu did not pose the same risk. Compared with those earlier assumptions it is looking pretty tame."
