[Cable] Installing cable over a 700' driveway

I'm buying a house on a much larger property. There is CaTV wiring within the house but just from a previous satellite dish installation. My wife and I want TV and high speed internet, and in the past we've been spoiled with cable and FiOS. I could get DirecTV installed but the internet service tends to stink.

This property has a 700' run from the road to the house, no overhead poles, and a small but solid bridge crossing a narrow creek.

We called Comcast and at first they were so disinterested they said they didn't service that area. Then we called again and they said it would be $7000 to install the cable. Um, yeah.

So here are my questions:
- How do I get a copy of the local franchise agreement to see what these jerks are obligated to do? (I really doubt they offer to do everything they are contractually obligated to do)
- Are there any other regulations that could help motivate them to help?
- We will have a declared business on the property - will that help?
- What do contractors do when building a new property to prepare for the cable installation? (I'm sure they don't pay $7k)
- What other installation options might exist that I'm not considering?

Thanks, David

[Cable] FDC and Signal Level Questions

I'm trying to learn some basics about cable TV repairs and signal problems. I get so tired of having to depend on the ignorant techs that Comcast sends to my house. They're not all stupid (some are very knowledgeable) but the last one insisted that the white coaxial cable line in my attic was for the cable TV even though I kept telling him it was for the antenna. He ended up replacing the ends/connectors on the antenna coax instead of on the cable TV coax. It's my house, I ought to know what I'm talking about. So I'd like to be able to do some basic repairs myself and try to figure out why I keep having the same signal issues.

Anyway... Because I've had signal issues for the last 15+ years, I now routinely try to check the signal via the diagnostics screen on my cable box. I'd like to be able to pinpoint the darn problem and finally eliminate it, especially since Comcast can't seem to do it.

On Friday, the FDC level was normal (white color) at -6 for ch 110, the Science channel (FDC Freq. 74 MHz, QAM Freq. 525 MHz, RDC Freq. 19 MHz). On Sunday, I noticed a lot of freezing or tiling and the FDC level was in the abnormal range (orange) at -15 for the same channel. Ever since Sunday, there has been freezing and tiling and the FDC level is still around -15. Everything else appears to be about the same as usual.

Can anyone tell me why the FDC level would change like that? I'm wondering if this could be weather related because it's been kind of humid here the last several days. The only thing about that is that none of the other cable boxes or coax cables have been affected. This particular cable line is located near the line that goes to my bedroom and actually shares two splitters with my bedroom TV and that TV is fine. So that's telling me something.

And if someone knows of a website that does a good job of explaining this kind of stuff, please send me a link. It's hard to educate myself when I can't find the information I need.

[Cable] Looking ahead at programming

We recently upgraded to the WHDVR Motorola DCX3510-M with Timewarner. With our old box you could look ahead at next week's programming but cannot seem to do this on the new box? Does anyone happen to know if this can be done?

Thank you

[DIRECTV] Should rewiring my DTV system help

I rewired my DTV system using solid copper RG6 instead of cable company issued RG 6 with copper clad steel.

The genie and the client seems to be working better with better picture quality.

I do have a service call set up because the dish needs to be realigned. I am getting weak signal on the 99 degree bird.

I wish I had a SWM 8 instead of the SWM LNB as those are more versatile with a legacy output and the ability to diplex the signal.

I started a thread relating to the tree that gets in the way on the DSLR home improvement forum.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.

I have not and will not cut the cord.
