Coax

I'm a contractor who runs into cable issues all the time in the homes I work on. I need to re-route existing lines or sometimes just install new ones. I 've decided to up the ante so I bought a compression kit which I like quite a bit over the crimp connectors.

Just a couple of questions. I can't always tell if existing coax is RG6Q or RG6. The Quad is thicker is it not? My compression kit came with R-59G ends, and ends they claim do both RG6Q and RG6. I've since learned that some ends are designed for both, others are not. Is Quad worth using, it's not that expensive. What performance issues are there. If a house doesn't already have it, I see diminishing returns. If it does, I would think the right job would be to continue using it.

Anyway, sorry for all the questions but I want to do this type of work the best I can.

[Cable] Motorola DCH6416

Hey All! This being my first experience with a Moto box, I was hoping I could get some insight from others...

I was just installed with Windjammer Cable yesterday morning (Formerly Time Warner, and formerly formerly Adelphia) and my internet is working decently, but the cable is leaving alot to be desired... I can get most of my programming, but all the Guide, Info, and Menu will show is "To Be Announced" or "One Moment Please" (Makes it kinda hard to set shows to record, and can't see what's coming on or even what channel i am watching)... Several phone calls in today, several hits and powercycles later, I have a tech scheduled for tomorrow... Now I know on the SA boxes in the Comcast system (in Notheast PA, where I just moved from and worked as a contractor for), if we experienced the same issue, we could get into the internal menu, page 2 would show the servers, the IPG server would usually be "Waiting" while all others were "Ready", then we could force it to connect to the IPG and download the guide information using a specific key sequence on the remote... Is there a way to do this on the Moto boxes as well?

Thanks for reading and in advance for any help!

[DIRECTV] Getting DirecTV installed on Saturday

Good afternoon, all:

I am getting DirecTV installed at a newly purchased townhome on Saturday, and just have a couple questions:

1) We just signed on this home a few days ago and don't have a TV there yet. Is a TV necessary for the installer to set up the TV service? I can bring a TV there if required, but I won't if it's not necessary.

2) I ordered the HD DVR receiver. From my understanding, this receiver has two satellite inputs (presumably to record one show while watching another). Will the installer run two coax cables to the receiver? There's already one coax going to the jack from the attic, so only one additional coax run would be necessary.

3) I was planning on running some cat6 cable to the same jack referenced in question number 2. Since I already have the cat6 cable, would it be unreasonable to ask the installer just to run the raw cable (no terminations or anything) to the jack as long as he's going to be fishing coax through the wall? That would save me some time and would be very helpful.

4) The HD DVR receiver with two satellite-in jacks: Does each input constitute a receiver (i.e. an extra $5/month charge)?

Thanks a bunch!

[DISH] Final answer: Can the 722 record two HD programs at once?

I'm frustrated because I am getting conflicting info about this. :uhh: The Dish sales rep is telling me that the 722 CANNOT record two HD programs at once. He says it will record one in HD and the other in SD. I asked him to confirm that this is true even with the box in single mode - not the duo (sharing with another tv) mode. I wouldn't think they would be wrong about this, since it would be a plus in their favor if it can indeed do so...

One note: I don't care about OTA signals - I am just asking about signal from the dish...

Please help!

Thanks!

[DISH] Possible to hook up 5 TVs with Dish?

I was going through my cable bill today and noticed that Suddenlink are hiking my basic cable and extended cable charges beginning next month. The total cost will now be $107 for basic, extended basic, 1x DVR and the lowest HD tier.

I am not sure that represents good value for money.

I went and priced up Dish and DirecTV and liked the offerings for Dish more, especially since I could get HBO, Cinemax, Starz, an HD DVR and connect 4 TVs all for $12 less than I pay right now.

It seems that there is no way (at least online) to order service for more than four TVs though, and I am also concerned that the HD DVR will go to waste since it will have to "power" another room for live TV so many of my desired recordings would not actually record.

The house layout is:

TV #1 - main HDTV in the front room, an HD DVR would be needed here.
TV #2 - first kid's room, SDTV, not used more than a couple of hours a day.
TV #3 - second kid's room, ditto above.
TV #4 - our bedroom, SDTV, used infrequently (a few hours a week).
TV #5 - at the back of the house for another family member, used regularly for hours a day. SDTV.

Right now it looks like I'd have to drop one (I guess #4) then the kid's rooms would split a standard box and an HD DVR would service #1 and #5. Again, with both of those TVs being used at the same time I'm sure a bunch of my desired recordings would not actually record.

Is there a way to add a third receiver that is just not detailed on Dish's site, or would DirecTV be the only way to fit this square peg into a round hole?

[DIRECTV] Is series multiswitch possible

Help! I had a Directtv HD slimline five installed recently. Its on the roof and I really dont want to go up there.(Im an old Bell lineman but would still rather not.) It looks as if I have a multiswitch built in to the dish assembly. I have three cables coming directly from the dish in the attic where its easy to get to. I would like to add three more receivers and would like to put a multiswitch
in the attic. I'm reading up on the Zinwell WB68 and the question is:
Can I cascade multiswitches? In other words, Can I connect the new switch to one or more coaxes coming from dish?

[DISH] doesnt sharing a dvr between 2 rooms defeat the purpose

doesnt sharing a dvr between 2 rooms defeat the purpose of having a dvr? How does anything get recorded if 2 people are watching at the same time? There website forces one dvr to two rooms. Even though dish network would work better, the forced choices don't sit well. If i have to go directv it has to go on the roof, which i dont want it up there. Is there a work around?
