[DIRECTV] Coax vs s-video

I have a friend that has DirectTv and he has the reciever connected to the TV with coax. Now he has a 65 in HDTV( he doesn't have HD programing and doesn't plan on getting any ) and frankly the picture sux. I've tried to convince him that if he connects the box to his TV via s-video( SD DirecTv boxes don't have component or HDMI ) his picture would be improved. Now I'm pretty sure I'm right but I'd like to know for those that have swicthed from coax to s-video if there is a real and detectable improvement in picture.

A second question. Can you get a HD receiver without getting the HD prgramming to take advantage of the HDMI port?

[DISH] they setup first time install. Out of patience??

:(

Telling full story, as succinctly as possible. Any phone numbers, email addys, links, suggestions appreciated. Bedford, TX 76021 is area. I have email notification on, and will reply to posts quickly. Thanks much.

1. I want to get rid of TWC, so went with http://www.GoDISH.com ad in the mail. Seems like an excellent deal. Lotsa promo stuff.

2. Called them, told rep my install was not normal, would like to do a self install, or they could do the outside, and I would do ALL the inside (I can take my time that way with all my equipment), or would be willing to do full self install. I wanted to talk to installer, but rep says, no, they "do millions of them" no problem.

3. DISH employed, nice, professional installer shows up at the correct time early on 7/3. After consulting with his boss on the phone, he can only do complete full install. He said I should contact customer service and tell them I need a CONTRACTOR assigned to do the install, which they should have known. I understand the situation. Not a problem.

4. Email back and forth all day with Client Services Manager, finally am told install manager said to call 888-387-6371 which is the installation escalations line. OK, COOL.

5. I call the number, they are "not really" escalations, rude dude can't even get my work order up or correct my main number on his computer "computer problems".

That's where I am now. Is GoDish.com just incompetent? I wasted a day from work. Still willing to give it a try if they will get a contractor and I can do the full inside install. Help please. :)

[DIRECTV] DirecTV HD Dish and DVR receiver - Self install questi

Hi,
I currently have a DirecTV (Single LNB) dish, 1 receiver, and 1 Tivo which I installed myself over 6 years ago. Now, I would like to upgrade both my dish and my receivers to HD.

I think I can install both the dish and the receivers myself with a in-line signal meter like I did before, however, before I drive myself crazy and find out "it's not as easy as it used to be..." are there
1) any helpful self-installer instructions for both the HD dish and HD receiver out there

2) what DirecTV HD dish model do you recommend - I currently have 2 TVs and might eventually want to add a 3rd or 4th TV.

3) I would like to be able to record and watch two different shows at the same time. Will the HR21 DVR do this if I only have one coax line currently coming in? What DVR model do you recommend.

4) If I but the dish and receiver from a reseller or from eBay, I should be cool with DTV, right? I just need to register the new access cards and upgrade to the HD package I want - right?

Thanks for any help!! Phil

[OTA] Help with Digital Converter Box

I have spent 2 hours trying to install a digital converter and so far, I have struck out. I have a Panasonic HDTV ready with an antenna in the attic. I get about 8 local stations, with ABC, NBC, and CBS reporting high definition.

Today, I purchased an Insignia converter box and it seems simple enough. I connected the antenna cable to the converter box, connected the converter box to the TV using a coaxial cable supplied with the converter. The convertor box has power.

The converter instructions say that a screen should come up which allows User input. But all I get is "snow." I don't see any switch on the TV that needs to be changed to HDTV.

I was hoping someone has tried this and had more success than I have. As always, thanks in advance.

Edit: Just a little bit later ... I needed to put the TV on channel 3! LOL. Silly me.

[DIRECTV] Local HD channel problem

For the past 2 or 3 days I have been having an issue with one of my local HD channels.

The HD signal of WBTV Channel 3 will go off for anywhere from 10 seconds to several minutes.

During this time, none of the other local channels including the SD signal of channel 3 is affected.

The question is, where does this problem come from? Is it Direct TV, is it my box or is it the signal provided by WBTV to DTV? How can I tell?

I have an HR 21 - 700 sw release 0x235

Transponders on 103 are

0 0 0 0 0 0 N/A N/A
N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A 87 47
84 0 0 57 56 0 91 0
N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A N/A

Who do I need to call and what do I need to tell them or complain about?

There was a period last night that channel 3 had the direct tv page showing this signal is not available at this time and we are aware of the problem. there is no need to call.

I am also getting some pixelation and stuttering on this channel from time to time.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

[DISH] On-Demand?

Hey Guys,

I had a friend tell me that DirecTV offers "On-Demand" which your box hooks up to the internet via ethernet and you have access to hundreds of free (older) movies.

Now, I know DISH offers a box that has ethernet on it and you can order PPV movies and such, but do they provide free (older) movies?

I used to have MediaCom years ago and they offered this and this is one thing I do miss a lot.

Thanks.
