Three residential phone lines -can I get one cable modem?

I currently in my home office a suddenlink Assis cable modem for the two phone lines that are only in my home office (one line for fax and one line for voice). The line quality and reliability have been oustanding.

Now I want move my one remaining whole house phone line over to suddenlink telephone. I know that suddenlink has cable modems that do multiple phone lines. Can I get them to install one modem for the three lines vrs two modems for three lines?

I have a telephone jack in my home office that is for the main house number that covers the whole house. I assume that the suddenlink installer can plug the cable modem into that jack that would then cover jacks in other rooms?

Thanks steve

Traffic overload in Pikeville, KY?

I recently switched from AT&T DSL to Suddenlink Cable after receiving a discounted rate deal in the mail, and I've been having a pretty annoying issue ever since.

At first the service was great and seemed worth every cent, but ever since a line was cut things have been going downhill. When the service was restored, I began to see some major latency and packet loss starting in the evenings, mainly from 7:00PM up until the early morning hours. I've had several techs sent out, and pretty much stayed in contact with tech support every day but I don't seem to be getting anywhere with this. I thought it was an isolated issue at first, but upon talking to others with Suddenlink as their ISP it seems to be a general problem for the area.

I was hoping that the issue would go away this week when they did some local maintenance, and was told to wait until it was concluded by several of the technicians I spoke to, but it seems to have done nothing. I've asked about the issue and the agents usually seem unable to comment or can't find any kind of documentation that would support it being acknowledged or addressed.

So, in the unlikely chance that someone else from such a small town reads this, is this a known problem for others? I really don't know how to get in contact with someone who could help get this looked at, as the agents I've talked to seem to be at a loss on how to approach the problem. Any thoughts or comments on this would be very much appreciated.

Suddenlink IS Bandwidth Capping

I wanted to start a new thread because it's no longer fiction. I just got my notice of the 8Mbps 150GB per month bandwidth cap.

I was on my computer last night and without downloading any programs I used 450MB in just over seven hours.

Youtube, approximately one hour.
Online gaming (Mortal Online) 2 hours
Email
Light browsing/research
Streaming 128kbps mp3 (3 hours).

Downloading Mortal Online is a 15GB download. If you need to redownload for whatever reasons, you can see how that sort of thing could eat your monthly "allowance" really fast, especially if your family uses the net.

-----------------

This next part is my position on capping in general, so it's an opinion piece. I don't pretend it's the truth.

I find Suddenlink's bandwidth to water and electricity analogically incompetent. Bandwidth isn't a natural resource and thus not limited the way natural resources are limited. In other words, bandwidth is virtually unlimited, and in the near future, it is going to be unlimited. Why is it that bandwidth is becoming more available, yet our prices per GB are going up?

A better analogy would be that when supply is up, prices go down. And supply is up. However, major ISPs prices are getting more expensive. So a better analogy would be that capping is analogous to price fixing, when there is little or no competition for bandwidth.

I'm also confounded by corporate reasoning related to bandwidth and what 99% of people use. If only 1% go over 12GBs a month on the 8Mbps plan, why the cap at all? Surely 1% cannot make a difference.

But let's get down to business here. Let me offer another analogy rather than corporate disanalogiess. If ISPs are allowed to cap usage whenever they like, or at whatever level they want, that's analogous to breaking anti-trust laws in that your ability to patronize other competing organizations is controlled by the ISP (movies, news, shopping).

Now if you could simply switch ISPs and use whatever information outfit you wanted, capping would be a non-issue. The reality is that there are very few choices in most municipalities, which means very little competition for bandwidth. For instance, AT&T is capping also, and guess what their cap is for their 8Mbps plan? Well, that would be 150GB a month. Imagine that. So if you have a choice between Suddenlink and AT&T, there is no bandwidth competition.

Another problems is that in most municipalities competition is limited and in many cases nonexistent. Your options are either a slow connection or a capped connection. This isn't competition folks. It's the manipulation of markets to insure back-end collusion that skirt anti-trust laws. In other words, instead of monopoly, we have oligopoly, which is the same thing, just spread over a few instead of one. The result is the same: higher prices from a lack of real competition.

What is even more odious about limiting your ability to retrieve information is that ISPs can use capping as a way to shape information. If you watch news casts over the net, then you understand how this can have a detrimental affect on what information you watch.

What really sets me off is the patriarchal position Suddenlink, and other corporations, have taken: They know what is adequate for us and our lives, and since there isn't any real competition, you have no voice in their decisions. Note the (paraphrased) print in the Suddenlink bandwidth cap letter: "We feel that this allowance will be adequate for you."

There are only two ways to prevent corporate totalitarianism: government regulation or real, raw, back-stabbing, jungle-like competition, where going out of business is the rule, not the exception. Both have their undesirable affects. However, currently we have neither, and having neither is going to prove much less desirable than either of those two options.

[Speed] Flagstaff - Fluctuating speeds and little to no upload s

I have the 10M down and 756k up package. My down connection slows considerably around 4pm-10pm. Upload speeds are constantly next to nonexistent. Ping is off and on. My computer is hardwired to the back of my router, if necessary I could run these tests directly through the modem. I flagged down a suddenlink truck in the neighborhood recently to inquire as to why this was happening, he said I should upgrade to a docsis 3.0 modem (from 2.0), is there any truth to that? Thanks for looking.

[Connectivity] On and off service

I have been a suddenlnk subscriber since their operation came to town.T hey actually took over the cable/ Internet provider I had been using. In the 5 or so years they have been in town not a month goes by that I do not have a problem that needs to be addressed. I have had numerous problems with the Internet including a 6 month period where the service was out completely, while all the while they tried to charge me for the service. Most recently I have been experiencing problems with the system timing out because I have way too high of a level coming into my house. Each time I call it in they slap some sort of bandaid on the system that lasts a month or so,but the problems never get solved.other than that. We usually experience some sort of system wide outage that can last anywhere from a minute to several days.
To get service out of sudden link is quite the ordeal. When I experience a problem with my cable or Internet if I call my local Truckee phone number I have to jump through all the hoops of their automated service, sit while I wait for the next available service rep, and then get the joy of speaking to a representative in of all places, Texas. Usually these people know nothing of the system in Truckee, Ca. Or actually care about my problem. I am usually given the standard we're sorry, that comes across as anything but their being sorry. Then it is usually it will be about a week or ten days until we can get a service tech out there. Now because of all the time I have spent dealing with suddenlink's nonsense I have the direct line to the customer service manager and we are on a first name basis. I speak to her about once every two weeks because that's what I average for service interruptions. But here is the the thing with all the calling and reporting of problems I have, wouldn't you think that sudden link would actually solve the problems or at least offer me the service at a discount.I pay nearly $90 a month for this headache and the price always seems to be going up. I know I could drop them as a provider but I live in an area with a huge amount of old growth tree and I am not able to receive such services as direct tv or dish network. So in my mind suddenlink actually has a monopoly on tv and Internet.v

[Connectivity] Catastrophic Internal Network Failure

I have Suddenlink for both work and home use.
Our internet has been fairly rock stable, however today it has been rather intermittent.

The technical support number for Suddenlink is busy, and the one time I got through to the tech support center, a recording played indicating they had a catastrophic internal failure and access to the internet was not available.
I still have access here, however it is rather spotty.

I just called again, and the message has changed with a couple of the eastern markets unaffected, but all others are.

My wife tried to pull up Google to find something, and it pulled up Suddenlink's search portal.. interesting..

[Connectivity] Amarillo Packet Loss

Is anyone else having troubles with packet loss lately? I just noticed it last week. I've been playing SWTOR and everything was going along fine till last week when I started experiencing huge lag spikes (9,000ms) and disconnects. This last Friday night was the worst with disconnects about every 20 minutes.

I started pinging in the background to see what was going on noticed packet loss at the same time as the lag spikes. If I got 3 or 4 packets lost in a row, then I would get disconnected. The worst set showed 5% loss. I called and they sent a tech out today that replaced my cable modem since it was an older model. Of course everything worked fine for the few minutes after that he was here. Unfortunately it's back again tonight. I was able to play fine till 7:30 then the lag came back and so did the disconnects. It seems like it's better with only 1% loss, but that's still enough to make gaming horrible.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue lately? I was pinging my modem and my modem's gateway. No loss to the modem, but loss to the gateway (74.196.44.1). I hate to complain about 1% loss since it's still better than my parents satellite, but it makes gaming horrible. I don't know what the loss was before I had these issues since I only started checking afterwards. I can definitely notice the lag and disconnects in SWTOR and BF3 on my Xbox.

[Connectivity] Can water in a cable tap cause problems?

We had a major storm blow through here 2 days ago (or maybe 3) and since that storm, my cable modem has not been staying connected. It will range then connect, then range again with the us/ds lights flashing. I called Suddenlink to have them send out a tech and he said he found lots of water in the tap (I don't know what that is). Could that cause the issues I am having?

I asked him when someone would be out to replace it and he said tonight. Hoping it gets resolved because this is annoying.

Eureka/McKinleyville/Humboldt County - Slow Speed, High Ping

I just had Suddenlink 20MB service installed earlier today in McKinleyville. I was aware of the problems with oversaturated nodes in Eureka earlier this year, but Suddenlink staff assured me it had been all upgraded & is problem free now.

I do a lot of online gaming was VERY happy to see 47MB down/1.7MB up (I was told 20MB/2MB by Suddenlink) & even more importantly, pings vs my existing 6MB AT&T DSL. 10-60ms ping reduction to various servers while doing back-to-back tests with both services all day. This was at 2:00pm though..... here is what happened later:

4:30pm pings rose from 15ms to 85ms, & speeds were down to 20MB down/1.3MB up.
7:00pm: 135ms ping, 12MB down/1.2MB up
9:10pm: 240ms ping, 8MB down/1.0MB up
10:30pm: 80ms ping, 16MB down/1.3 up
11:30pm 17ms ping, 47MB down/1.65 up
12:45am (now) 16ms ping, 47MB down/1.7 up

AT&T NEVER fluctuates. It is rock stable all day every day & pings remain the same anywhere day or night. These problems with Suddenlink over-selling their available bandwidth are absolutely ridiculous. I am going to try to contact a high-level supervisor tomorrow & see if they have intentions of a real fix, or if I should just cancel & stick with AT&T that I've been with 2.5 years.

[BW Meter] Got the Cap letter in the mail today (Muskogee, OK)

Got the dreaded introduction of caps letter in the mail today. I'm on the 20mb plan so my cap is plenty high for my use. It just bothers me as only 6 months ago when I switched to SL from AT&T dsl because of their caps I was told by 3 different reps that they do not "Monitor data or keep track of usage in any way and don't have any plans to introduce this".

At least their bandwidth meter is way way off in my favor
