3 1/2 Day Outage in North Carolina

Went through a 3 1/2 day outage here in North Carolina from Thursday night until yesterday afternoon. Anyone else have this problem? Had outages before, but never this long. It might have been weather related (due to derecho), but not sure.

[Qwest] Error's - What do these mean?

Hi Everyone,

I was looking at the WAN stats on my modem & noticed the following:

Near End CRC Errors: 962
30 Min Near End CRC: 5
30 Min Near End FEC: 12014
30 Min Far End FEC: 9

SNR: 21 dB Down 6 dB up
Attenuation: 20 dB down 6 dB up
Power 16.1 dBm down, 8.1 dBm up

The main 2 #'s above I'm looking at is the "Near End CRC Errors" & "30 Min Near End FEC". I'm trying to figure out what each one of these means & if I should be concerned. I will say that about every couple of weeks, my modem will reboot & after about 3-5 minutes, everything will be fine again.

I will say that I did have a problem with my connection, where my upload sync rate went from 5120 to 38xx & to fix the problem, I had to plug the modem into the first jack that's wired from the outside.

I did find a couple things that mentioned what each of these was, but one would say "near side" is the modem & the other says "near side" is the dslam

Thanks!

[Qwest] Internet Cost Recovery Fee

Anyone notice this on their latest CL bill? I didn't have it before and I think it's BS. Raising prices in itself doesn't bother me. What bothers me is when companies try to sneak in additional costs by calling it a fee so they don't have to increase the base price.

Double UP the extra wires inside CAT6 to improve signal?

Hello, I have been doing some research and I cant seem to find the proper information to suggest I can or can't do this. However, I found a eHow article suggesting using the extra wires helps signal. So, can we debate this please? Are there ways I can test it out myself to see for sure? I have the time and plenty of length of cable haha. Below is the article that clearly states to "DOUBLE UP" on the wires if you have them.

http://www.ehow.com/how_6358692_wire-up-dsl-phone-line.html

Ok, here is the setup. The C1000A has its very own dedicated Cat6 cabling. Nothing else is serviced on that cat6 line. This cable also has the inside plastic partition thingy in case it matters. Currently, I am using the Green wire going to the green connection on an old Surface Mount RJ11 phone jack (btw, I need a better jack because the wires inside this one are super thin, any ideas?). The accompanying Green/white is going to the red of course.

So, can I use the green+green/white as one single wire twisted together and installed onto the green connection? And same with the Orange+Orange/white going to the Red connection? To help transfer signal? Will I lose the self shielding effect if I do this?

Also, where can I get a really good Surface Mount RJ11 Jack to use just for the modem connection? I already have a 100mhz shielded Belkin RJ11 cable, but I do not want a ANY weak link and this 35 year old jack looks like serious utter crap, lol.

Thanks for any help...

[Embarq] Customer Support-Gone to Pot

This is a whole new level of low for Centurlink customer support. Every summer, from about May-June until about August I will repeatedly lose sync during the day---during the night, my connection is 100% fine and stable (when it's up, my speeds and latency are also fine). This has been going on since I first got service in 2008 (so 5 summers of issues)....I've had replacement modems, techs out, etc---it's a very troubling issue to pin down.

In any event, it started up again today...so I called Centurylink tech support about it. After explaining everything and what I've done and what has been done in the past, they stated they were going to send me a replacement modem; instantly a red flag went up; last time this happened, I got an unwanted fee and eventually my grandfathered-in Embarq plan changed (which I've never been able to get back; my current plant is cobbled together to emulate my former one).

I asked if there would be a fee this time....upon which I was told yes. The worst of it? I have to accept this replacement modem in order for further testing or diagnosis to be done on the line---can't have a tech out or anything until I accept this modem and the $5 a month fee being crammed down by throat as well.

I used to love Embarq and Centurylink...but it's stuff like this; their unresponsiveness, customer support, and line stability that makes me want to switch unless things improve =/

The most frustrating thing? There's no one TO switch to.

PK5001z Latency Issues

I seem to be having very inconsistent latency issues with the PK5001z paired with my WNDA4100. The pings aren't 'horribly' high, but the random spikes and inconsistent times are very noticeable.

I've had a tech come out twice to do a test from the box outside and he's said they can't see anything wrong on their end or the box itself.

Is there any reason this would be happening?

Westel 890-210015-04 Rev E DSL Modem: Work w/ CenturyLink?

I'm a low-income disabled senior and rely on hand-me-down electronics.

A year ago I signed up with CenturyLink for a low-income discount on a their slowest speed DSL internet connection with a Zyxel PK5000Z modem. The modem rental was free for the first year.

Starting this month they're billing me five bucks and change for the modem.

A BBS friend has offered me his Westel model 890-210015-04 Rev E DSL Modem.

Does that give you enough information to determine if that modem would work with my current service? I'd like to return the Zyxel modem to CenturyLink to avoid the monthly rental charge.

So I see the options as: bad modem, bad line (last mile), bad DSL card about 1 mile from here, bad something in the CO, attempted hacking, CL doing something ... . CL says "We're working on the problem.". Thoughts? Ideas? I had the same problem with my old PK5000.

[Qwest] 40/20 only negotiating at 24/10

My parents live out in the Phoenix metro area, and I recently had them upgrade their DSL service to 40/20 from 20/869k. My dad's not very tech savvy, so I'm often called upon to VNC into his computer and show him how to do stuff (or figure out what's wrong since his problem descriptions aren't always very descriptive). Anyhow, it's noticeably faster than it used to be (seeing as upstream is 10x as fast now), but I'm a tad disappointed that it only negotiated at 24/10 (which is still more than they need, but half what they're paying for). I realize DSL is a best effort service, but I wanted to post some modem stats (Q1000, if memory serves) and see how they looked before I spend a lot of effort troubleshooting when I'm out there next week. If they seem normal, then is it worth pursuing this with CenturyLink at all? If they're not normal, what would be the best first step in troubleshooting. I was planning to try and plug the modem in either at the NID or at the feed point for their structured wiring so I can at least rule out a bad phone or filter. Anything else beyond that I should try? I'm in IT (Linux/Mac workstation/server support and some networking), so I'm comfortable at a command line if need be.
Thanks!

Here's the stats from the modem. I can telnet into it and get more data if there's anything else that might be of use:

Centurylink DSL Speed Increase in South Louisiana

WELL THE NUMBERS ARE IN FOLKS....

And the numbers don't lie...Our DSL @ the chamber is officially upgraded to 20Mbps....I crunched all the numbers and put the new modem through a battery of speed, ping, trace and latency testing and here are the calculated results (IF ANY OF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE OUTCOMES)...

I ran 6 back to back speed tests using 2 different Servers (Dallas Texas & Cox New Orleans are the servers I used)

After compiling all the data, crunching the numbers and figuring the averages here they are (I'm only going to list the final averages in each test group since posting all the data would be enormous and too time consuming...I AM TRYING TO HEAD OUT TO GATORS FOR A NIGHT CAP AFTER ALL !!! LOL )

AVERAGES (POST DSL SPEED INCREASE AND MODEM UPGRADE):

1.) PING - 41 MS
2.) DOWNSTREAM - 19.35 MBPS
3.) UPSTREAM - 1.705 MBPS

to give you an example of the awesome power added here were the numbers right before the speed increase was brought online:

1.) PING - 68 MS
2.) DOWNSTREAM - 10.11 MBPS
3.) UPSTREAM - 0.59 MBPS

Do you see the difference?????!!!

Message or post a comment if you have any questions for me or would like any more information...ONE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION WAS MY EXACT LOCATION....I AM IN LOUISIANA...IN THE PARISH OF EVANGELINE...IN THE CITY OF VILLE PLATTE (INSIDE THE CITY LIMITS)

Happy Surfing & DSL'ing

Excellent CSR Service

As to much of what is posted here is, perhaps deservedly, in the form of complaints, I am going to relate my excellent service from earlier today:

I had noticed that the Internet seemed to be running somewhat slowly, so I did a few Speakeasy speed tests; when those showed my DSL speed to be low I then ran a CenturyLink test, which was also below normal speed.

I was just about to call technical support, when it occurred to me to check the modem status, where I found that my download speed was set to 12xxx KBPS instead of 20xxx KBPS.

Having the information, I placed my call, and was promptly connected with a very friendly female CSR. I explained what I had found, she asked the usual questions to ascertain that I am who I am (I actually do know that...), and quickly noticed that a glitch had changed my DSL speed.

She reset my DSL, and, as I was about to unplug the modem and reconnect it so that it would regain the DSL line and ISP connection, it did so on its own.

The phone call probably lasted six or seven minutes, the CSR was very knowledgeable, competent, polite, friendly, and made me feel that my business was important to her company.

[Embarq] CenturyLink Bill Question

I'm new to CenturyLink and was looking over my latest bill again. Noticed a couple things that puzzled me:

North Carolina 911 Fee - I have internet only (no phone service). Why would I have to pay a 911 fee on an internet only line? I don't think I can call 911 (or anything else) on it. I didn't have to pay a 911 fee to Time Warner Cable or to AT&T for U-verse when I had those at my previous residence (also in North Carolina) for internet only service.

Wake Sales Tax - It appears this is being calculated on the $6.99 monthly rental fee of the modem. The town used for my mailing address is located in Wake County, but my home is actually not in that town. It's not located within any town limits, and is actually in neighboring Harnett County. I don't *think* there's any difference in the sales tax rate between the two counties, but I could be wrong. Should I even bother mentioning this to CenturyLink?

[CenturyTel] Does Centurylink ever fix its network issues?

Our DSL has been terrible every afternoon/evening for 2 straight months now, and there's never been even a hint of improvement. High pings and speeds sit around 0.2mbps for hours and hours at a time, but we're told there's not enough customers in our area to cause bandwidth exhaustion. The problem has apparently been handed off to the engineers and we call the local supervisor every day, but this is just getting ridiculous. What the heck goes on at this company that an issue that causes an entire area to be barely able to send email for 10hours a day can go on for months on end? I mean I know this is kind of a rant, but seriously, do they ever fix these kinds of problems or is switching to cable if it ever becomes available the only way we'll ever get decent service again?

[Qwest] Charge for switching accountholders

So I want to get landline service and I qualify for low-income reduced rates I'm pretty sure.

I want to become accountholder at my house, but currently my roommate's name is on account.

When he called Centurylink yesterday, person said it was $15 to switch, so we said no.

I just called today and the woman told me: "well we wouldn't charge you, but others would." I'm like, "what? why?" She says some call centers charge others don't. When I expressed my irritation about this, she gives me the "have a nice day" like somehow it's my fault that her company has insane policies and practices.

I couldn't get the thing set up cuz my roommate isn't here right now and they need to talk to him (of course they did talk to him yesterday...)

Meanwhile I'm looking at VoIP reviews, and apparently many of them rip you off too.

Is there any hope for getting respectful telecom service these days? If not, what is the source of this situation?

Avilla, IN Service quality bad again. Fixed 1st time by FCC

During peak hours 5pm-12:30am.

I usually will ping 30-40 to chicago, google, yahoo with 10 down and .78 up.

I just started having problems during peak times on 4/28/2013. Even during non peak hours everything is at least 10% higher on pings and 10% lower on bandwidth.

They said in order to consider this a problem you have to average 300ms on the ping... which 100ms ping isn't acceptable to me.

If for whatever reason they won't fix this issue within a 24-48 hour window as I was told on the phone after arguing to get the line looked at,

I'll file my seconda(2nd) FCC complaint against Centurylink.

I've documented everything since I started having poor service and I won't hesitate to file after the 48hr window.

I cannot get to my actual junction box since i'm in a condo but would i be better off just paying for a service call to see if CL can resolve the issue? The only reason i'm concerned is i've been using my Dish Sling adapter a lot lately when out and about and it usually streams at 2-3Mbps for HD

[Embarq] Bridge Mode Problem Since Storm

I bought a new house and had CenturyLink DSL installed just a little over 2 months ago. I have no other choice for internet here. I got the 10Mbps speed, which is the highest they offer in my area. One of the first things I did after the tech left from the install was to put the PK5001Z into bridge mode because I have my own router. It's been rock-solid from day one, and speed tests always showed right at 10Mbps.

Yesterday late afternoon/early evening we had a really bad storm and the internet went out. I had a red DSL light on the modem. It was still out this morning, so I contacted support. They said there was an outage in my area, they were working on it, but they had no ETA as to when it would be fixed.

A little while ago I noticed that the DSL light was green again, but the internet light was flashing red/green. I did a couple power cycles (about an hour apart), but it still came back up to the internet light flashing red/green (all other lights green). Just for the heck of it I tried a factory reset on the modem, and after I did that everything was green and internet was working. GREAT!

So...I put it back into bridge mode and I got the red/green blinking internet light again (all other lights green) and no internet. I've tried several times now going back and forth. Every time I do the factory reset everything works fine. As soon as I put it back into bridge mode I have no internet.

It's been rock-solid and I've had no problems at all with it in bridge mode for a little over two months, now bridge mode gives me no internet. Anyone have any clues as to why it's not working now? I'd much prefer it to be in bridge mode like it has been.
