Websites/programs not loading properly w/ Actiontec GT701D

Hey guys,

So, just got CenturyLink 10 meg DSL set up in my place. Everything's working fine except a few things:

- Images from imgur.com will not load.
- I cannot log into reddit.com. I get an "error: 0".
- I cannot download the Heroes of Newerth client from their site. I can download other programs from other sites fine. And when I did have the game (I uninstalled to try to reinstall) I couldn't update to the newest patch, it just sat at 0%.

I think my problem is stemming from my new modem, an Actiontec GT701D because I have played this fine on cable (at my previous house and at my friend's house). I tried forwarding the HoN ports but that didn't work. And I have no idea what to do about the imgur.com problem.

ANY ideas are gladly welcomed.

Thanks!

[CenturyTel] Is this normal? Columbia, MO.

Hi all, I've been experiencing a *lot* of issues with my DSL service for the past 18+ months, and have finally reached the point where I'm considering switching to cable. So I'm writing here today to see if what I've experienced is truly beyond my control and is simply "the way it is" and if I should go ahead and roll the dice with a new service.

Apologies in advance for the wall of text :D

Basic info - I live about 750 meters from my CO (according to techs who have visited) and that was supposed to be a real perk. So I switched to DSL about 5 years ago because our cable internet was slowing down significantly in the evenings and suffered frequent day long outages 2-3 times a month. The DSL worked great, and until last year I had no complaints other than the slow up speed.

My service plan is a 10 MB down, 1.5MB up - which has never, ever been the case in terms of up speed.

[att=1]

This test above is actually higher an upspeed then I normally get to sites like youtube, Mediafire, or other hosting sites which is about 80KBs max. It's only been recently though that the upspeed has been an issue as I want to upload 720p or 1080p videos and they will take days, or find it impossible to maintain a positive share ratio on some torrent sites

However, poor upspeed hasn't been a deal breaker. I can live with it.

The crux of the issue is dropped packets, disconnects, and crazy pings, which CT tech support have fruitlessly danced around with no solution.

In the past 2 years, I've had the modem replaced 3 times, had techs out on half a dozen occasions to test the lines and replace various things from a box in the yard, the cables leading from it, to the phone jacks and wires in the house etc. I've also replaced my network card, tested the connection on other computers, and (hopefully) ruled out my own PC as the issue.

It has gotten to the point now when I call, they simply say "This is normal."

[att=2]

Maybe it's because they just ping my modem 4 times and it works fine those 4, and doesn't show all the drops like a longer test? I don't know, frankly I'm not that technical.

But I can't play online games reliably, can't stream down any youtube content above 480p, have to refresh web pages to get them to load and my frustration level is getting critical.

The new Charter cable they've laid in the neighborhood promises 25 down, 10 up, and I'm seriously thinking it's just time to switch. Is there a fix for this?

[CenturyTel] Westell327W: Can't access wired device from WIF

I am on CenturyLink 3 Mb DSL with Dynamic IP and use the Westell 327W modem/router. I have a DVR-based Security camera plugged into the 327W with an Ethernet cable. I have a WIFI network established with the 327W that is fairly reliable. I cannot access the DVR with a smartphone using the WIFI network. I am able to access the DVR with a smartphone using the 3G connection (from outside the 327W). I also have a Trendnet WIFI camera with the same issue.
Are there any settings that would stop a device on the WIFI network from accessing a device hard-wired to the 327W? I have screenshots of every page of the 327W set-up that I could attach if that would help.

I appreciate any and all comments.

Who can I talk to about upgrades to infastructure

I live in Downtown Denver and the only speeds supported are up to 12Mbps/840k. I was hoping there might be a way to contact someone in order to see if/when upgrades might be made. I would love to get 40/20 or w/e speeds or even up to 20-25 Mbps. In my building there's only two providers, both dsl and both the same speed and price really, so its just a bit frustrating. Ya i know there'e people with less, but I live in the middle of a major city and it just seems a bit ridiculous.

[Embarq] Line quality gripes and packet loss

Throughout the month I've been dealing with high ping and low, erratic connection speeds unsuitable for anything but basic chatting and web browsing. Now, thankfully, this has been an intermittent issue, usually lasting several hours once every two weeks before seeming to resolve. Since last time it happened during the early AM hours, I'm not inclined to believe this is a congestion issue.

The line quality test paints a clear picture:

http://www.dslreports.com/pingtest/a89c49862a82/3038867

And here we have another test I ran earlier in the month during a similar episode:

http://www.dslreports.com/pingtest/5326c77a8b59/3032209

Now, I'm not an expert, but I'm willing to wager the problem is being caused by faulty hardware at 173-248-66-237.centurylink.net, hardware that no one has thought to fix or replace yet.

Well, like clock work, CTL is slowed again in the North Texas area to a crawl at times I want to use it. It has been this way now for at least the past 5 months. I've only just reached the point to where I must get on here and put it out for everyone else to see.

Last I was told by CTLJoey, a few months back, is that there is a known issue down the line and it will take a few months of engineering to correct.

Any update Joey? I can barely game at night with high pings yet alone watch any streaming services.

The power light goes out for several seconds, then starts blinking and continues to boot up. I've written an Expect script to generate the list below. So I see the options as: bad modem, bad line (last mile), bad DSL card about 1 mile from here, bad something in the CO, attempted hacking, CL doing something ... . CL says "We're working on the problem.". Thoughts? Ideas? I had the same problem with my old PK5000.

[CenturyTel] Does Centurylink ever fix its network issues?

Our DSL has been terrible every afternoon/evening for 2 straight months now, and there's never been even a hint of improvement. High pings and speeds sit around 0.2mbps for hours and hours at a time, but we're told there's not enough customers in our area to cause bandwidth exhaustion. The problem has apparently been handed off to the engineers and we call the local supervisor every day, but this is just getting ridiculous. What the heck goes on at this company that an issue that causes an entire area to be barely able to send email for 10hours a day can go on for months on end? I mean I know this is kind of a rant, but seriously, do they ever fix these kinds of problems or is switching to cable if it ever becomes available the only way we'll ever get decent service again?

[CenturyTel] Connection Issues

Could anyone tell me if anything is out of the norm here?
I use CenturyLink DSL... I have the 15mb package.

I've also been having problems for years. I mean real big problems.
Have had several technicians out to try and diagnose but to no availability. My connection constantly drops, I never get speeds anywhere close to what I pay for, and I'm lucky if my internet works longer than 1hour a day.

I've had several new modems, so I know that's not the problem. The technicians tried to say it was the wiring in my house. Have never had any problems with the phones or anything. But he ran a new line straight from the box outside with a female rj-45 jack, and it still does the same thing. So I believe that would eliminate it being the wiring in my house?

But here are some stats:
Transceiver Revision : A2pB030m1.d23a
Vendor ID Code : 4D54
Line Mode : ADSL_2plus
Data Path FAST

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 5260 691
Margin (dB) 4.4 6.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 40.5 26.8
Transmit Power (dBm) 0.0 12.6

[Embarq] Rebooting DSL Modem Update

I was bad about not following up on the forum posts but do have an answer to why I was needing to reboot the modem every few days. Turns out I was having line issues and accumulating errors. By rebooting the modem I cleared them. One day I was talking to a support specialist for another question about bandwidth restrictions and mentioned the rebooting issue. She did an in-depth look at our line, ran some remote tests and suggested sending a tech to investigate further. He arrived several hours later and split the data line and voice line installing what I think was a filter at the outdoor box. He said we could leave the DSL filters in the house installed if we wanted but they were no longer needed. This indeed has cured the issue. It's been weeks and the speed has been consistent. We're rated at 8Mbs and tests show consistently just barely under. I'm quite happy with our service and quality of both voice and data. Centurylink has saved my sanity.

PPPoE on fiber works from PC but not from router

Hi,

I have 10mbs fiber from Embarq, now Centurylink, in SW Florida that worked with router using PPPoE until a month ago. Since then it will only connect if I use PPPoE connection directly from the PC, but will not connect using PPPoE from router. I myself tried 3 different routers, and CL tech also made me purchase official ZyXel router. Hours on the phone with CL, and tech visit to no avail.

My connection is PPPoE, not DHCP, but I tried both anyway.

The login that always worked and still works from the PC is username: [mod edit -- removed for privacy reasons -- fatness] with generic password [mod edit -- removed for privacy reasons -- fatness]
I tried other usernames as the important part is @earthlink.net.

Directly from the PC it connects in 2 seconds and I get WAN IP address. If I load the router web page it shows 10mbs connection but no Internet ie IP address is 0.0.0.0. Status shows auth failed.

Anyone knows how to fix this? Anyone knows how to escalate to networking department?

Bonded DSL, DDR2200, and VOIP

Is anyone successfully using this combination? I found one topic from a year ago with a similar problem, but no solution reported and the OP hasn't been back since then.

We tried setting up some VOIP phones today over a bonded DSL connection with a DDR2200 router. This is a Prism setup, without the TV service activated. The internet works and the modem stats are good on both pairs. It's a 20/2 connection. I get 19.5 down and 1.5 up on various speed tests. The DNS resolves and the phones download their config files and images, but are unable to register with the VOIP server.

I found the password and was able to login as admin. We disabled the SIP ALG, and tried setting up port forwarding. The only suggestion CL Support offered was to put the modem in bridge mode and try a separate router. We didn't have another router at the site, so that's the only thing we didn't try.

Any comments or suggestions?

I just started having problems during peak times on 4/28/2013. Even during non peak hours everything is at least 10% higher on pings and 10% lower on bandwidth.

They said in order to consider this a problem you have to average 300ms on the ping... which 100ms ping isn't acceptable to me.

If for whatever reason they won't fix this issue within a 24-48 hour window as I was told on the phone after arguing to get the line looked at,
