Latency Problems - Rutledge, AL

Just ran a line quality test... these are the results. Provisioned for 3.5/768.

Sometimes it runs like a rocket, other times, it is like the "slowsky's" from Comcast... :)

http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2591402

I intend on calling Centurylink about this... what would be the best way to explain this so they will understand what the problem is?

Thanks.

Availability in metro cities.

I live in Las Vegas, NV. I am on the south end of town where a lot of new development is blooming. I just switched from Cox Cable's 12mbit/3mbit plan, with power booster of 20mbit burstable to CenturyLink. Main reason is Cox Cable is extremely expensive. I am really disappointed cause all CenturyLink had to offer was a cheesy 3mbit connection. Sure it is better than dial up. But I am a computer programmer, and I download a lot of stuff. Specially running Linux with all developmental type software, as I am a huge bug tester for a lot of open source programs, like KDE. So 3mbit really doesn't cut it.

I live in one of the most popular and populated cities in the United States, and the area I live in has huge amounts of residential housing and businesses. So I really don't understand why I can't get the 10mbit service, or hell, even the 5mbit service. I really think CenturyLink needs to expand their availability in areas like this if they ever plan on dominating the cable industry for internet.

CenturyLink's NOT so 10Mbps upgrade

Well last week my 1.5Mbps service was upgraded to CenturyLink's 10Mbps Internet service. Last Tuesday my connection dropped as expected since that was the day my service was scheduled to change. Unfortunately when the Internet came back I was down to .8Mbps download but up to .75Mbps on the Upload. I called multiple times throughout the day for an update and the Helpdesk couldn't give me any info other then my ticket still stating in Progress.

Wednesday I get home and I'm still at .8Mbps so I call again and the Tech says to unplug my modem for 30 seconds and plug it in again. I then hit 3Mbps then 7Mbps which he then says that's what I should expect and I need to live with it since I have a variable service. Hmm everywhere I looked it said 10Mbps and nothing about a variable service. Too bad we couldn't also get a variable bill!

Anyway, Later Wednesday night I'm again back down to .8Mbps so I call the help desk again and they had me reset the modem then asked which modem I had. Turns out I needed to upgrade to a newer modem. Sad part is when I upgraded my service I made sure to ask if I needed to upgrade my modem at the same time giving them all my Modem info which I was told I was OK. I also love the $23 shipping charge that cannot not be avoided or minimized.

Friday Modem comes but they sent me the wrong one, I instead received the wireless router so I called back and then had to wait till Monday for someone to drop off the correct modem since now the shipping bill is coming out of their pocket and they didn't want to pay it either. LOL

I installed the new Westell 6100 and my Download jumped finally to 10Mbps. Woot Woot!! But it didn't last.

My Internet has been up and down, MOSTLY DOWN, to .8Mbps and lower. Tonight my 10Mbps Internet is only running at .65Mbps!!!!!

I'm kind of livid right now at this horrible service and am in need of some suggestions. When I called the upgrade in they mentioned that this would require someone to come out to my house and do something in the box outside but I had the day off and never saw anyone.

I also finally received a response about my e-mail I sent about this so called “Variable” 10Mbps connection which basically says as long as I’m over a 3Mbps connection they can charge me my full price. The best part is that they send me a survey link and when I click on it I get

The web site you are accessing has experienced an unexpected error.
Please contact the website administrator.

Looks like I’m not the only one with issues. LOL Ok Now that I have vented I feel much better!

Anyone have any ideas where to go next?

Hookup DSL Modem Wireless Router

I received our DSL modem today and we are scheduled to be activated with CenturyLink tomorrow (model EQ-660R ADSL). Currently, I have our HughesNet satellite modem hooked directly into the WAN port on my Apple Time Capsule, which is also an Airport Extreme Wireless router.

The instructions have you hook the modem directly into your PC. Will I be able to just plug it in to my wireless router same as I do the satellite modem?

    Thanks,

New to C Link; pages not loading properly

Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+
2.00 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM

I've just had CenturyLink dsl for a couple of days. My speed is good and if I can get this problem worked out, I think I'll be very happy with it.

I'm finding that some (~25%) pages will not load on a first click...some will load load on a 2nd, 3rd and/or stopping the load and clicking again. A few won't load at all until I restart Firefox. Also, the little "progress wheel" on the tab will not stop turning even after the page has loaded. A few times the tab has frozen and I can't do anything but close the application. Firefox then appears closed but I get an error message that it is still running if I try to restart it. I then have to restart Windows. Ctl,Alt,Del shows nothing running. I had never had a problem with pages loading with the cable. (There was a connection reliability problem...that's why I changed)

I spoke to CenturyLink's tech for quite some time night before last. He checked all my resources and everything was fine. He had me restart Windows, turn off the modem and restart. I reinstalled Firefox with no difference. Today, after connecting via live chat, I tried installing a previous version of FF with the same results.

At first I also tried logging on through Internet Explorer, thinking if it's a Firefox problem that I wouldn't encounter the same problems on IE, but it's the same.

The tech wants me to borrow a laptop, connect the modem with it, install FF and see if I have the same problems with a different computer.

I will borrow a laptop, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else has had a history of this problem? Could it be a mouse problem that has popped up coincidentally at the same time I switched to dsl? I'm flummoxed. :)

If anyone has any ideas on what might be going on, I'd appreciate it. Is there anything else I should try or just check back in after I try another computer? Thanks in advance.

How do I find out how far I am from the CO?

I have CT DSL and am considering a speed upgrade.
I'm pretty sure we're quite far from the CO, although my margins look pretty good. The last time I talked to a CT rep, she could not tell me how far I was from the CO.
Is there a number to call to get that info?

CenturyLink DSL Availability

I am a CenturyLink (former Embarq) customer for local phone service and live in a rural area north of Kansas City, MO. Currently I have HughesNet for internet access, but I have a very old dish that I think is getting close to needing a new transmitter (lots of transmit errors and service interruptions).

I'm very interested in switching to DSL with CenturyLink, but according to the web site the service is not available at my location. I've called a CenturyLink store to try and find out how long it might be before DSL is available for me with no definitive answer other than, try and hold out for a couple of months.

Is there a number I can call to get information about how far I am from DSL service or to do a location check to see if it's close to my location?

I really do not want to invest in new HughesNet hardware or get back into another one or 2 year commitment. However, I'm not sure how much longer it's going to hang in there!

    Thanks!

Unusual latency

I'm in O'Fallon, MO and since Thursday or so (11/12/09) I've been having fairly significant fluctuations in my latency. My wife and I are WoW players and we started noticing random spikes in our latency relating to delayed cast times and a few disconnects. I ran a few speakeasy bandwidth tests to Chicago, Atlanta, and Dallas.

We are on the 15Mb/3Mb fibre plan and generally get 20/3 in speed. My Dallas test was okay but Chicago and Atlanta barely broke 9Mb on Sunday. Last night I rand them all again and they were better but still around 12/2 each. I also ran a tracert to the WoW server we play on in the Dallas datacenter and not hop was over 58ms. In game, however, our latencies jump from 158ms (normal for us) to over 380ms. Even when out latencies are fairly normal we're getting some casting/loot lag.

WoW forums as well as other guildies' lack of problems indicate this isn't a server issues. I'm on a WRT54G that is about 3 years old and lacking one firmware update (to be applied tonight) and since it's fibre I have no modem. I've not had any issues until mid-last week.

Is there any sort of known issue on CenturyLink's network (upgrades/maintenance) that might be giving me this? Could it really be the firmware or is my router and/or additional 10/100 switch going kaput? The latency spikes are killing us. Any ideas are appreciated. I'm at work sadly so not able to try anything until I get home.
