Speed: Puppy Linux vs. WinXP

This may be the wrong place to ask about this, but there are a lot of knowledgeable members on here. I just loaded Puppy 4.3 on my computer. It connected OK to the internet through my Netgear modem/router, but the speed is way off compared to WinXP (5 down vs. about 12 down). Also pings are about 130 compared to about 50 according to speedtest.net. Is there something I need to tweak to get Puppy's internet performance up to WinXP?

[CATV] USA HD Picture Quality Nearly Unwatchable?

Is it me or is the picture on USA HD in NE Connecticut completely unwatchable. We're watching wrestling. Every time there's any kind of bright light or high action, the picture immediately turns completely into block form. It's quite annoying.

[HSI] High Latency/Packet Loss

The past 2 days, I've been experiencing high latency and huge lag spikes in a few games I play, So I posted it on the World of Warcraft forums and I was told I was getting a lot of packet loss and to contact my ISP, I'm located in Whittier, CA. I was wondering if charter is having problems in this area ?

The screenshot he asked me to post:

[HSI] Moving to Charter territory, can't get a straight answer

I'm moving to a town (Dandridge, TN) that has an exclusivity agreement with Charter for cable service. I called last week to see about setting up service for our new (to us) home. I was told that the address was showing up as "out of area" but was also listed as previously having service. The house is already wired and has cable jacks in several rooms. He told me to order online during the week of my move to make sure a service date was available that worked for me. He assured me it would go through since someone previously had service there and we'd be up and running in no time.

Tonight, I get everything ordered online. Charter.com accepts my address, I get the bundle I want picked, I get my confirmation number, and I get the call to set up an installation date. That's when the CSR drops the bomb...

"I'm sorry sir, your address is 453 feet outside of our service area. Have a nice evening!" I ask him to check the records, that someone who lived there had been confirmed as having service previously. He keeps parroting the "outside of our area" line and says I need to call back during the service department's open hours to see if there is anything they can do.

Here's the problem. The house is 300 feet from my church, where I am the account administrator for our Charter Business account. The house is less than 200 feet from a business along the main road that has service. And, as I said, there's cable coming out of the floor in three of the rooms already...

My wife and I have gotten used to doing quite a bit of work at home in the evenings and on the weekends; her business requires her to have a dedicated high-speed internet connection. DSL is an option, but the price point for the horribly-named "DSL Extreme" 6.0mbs service is stupidly high and we do not use AT&T because of the harassment and trickery they repeatedly pulled on my wife's business.

We've got to do something, and Charter's inconsistency in the "do we have service or not" department is wearing our patience thin. We move in full-time on the 14th and had planned to have everything installed on the 13th. This is putting a kink in our plans. What should we do?

New 2 year offer with rate increase

Hi,

Just got letter from Charter detailing rate increases and an offer for a 2 year rate guarantee. Does anyone know - does the 2 year guarantee require phone service to be bundled with the package? I'm sure the phone service is fine but I no longer use a land line.

Email from Charter about adding Zip Code to login?

Did anyone else see the email from Charter about requiring your zip code now also as a part of your login, in addition to your email address and password?

I'm guessing that this only applied to the charter.net web based login, as I see no way to do this with a pop3 client, unless Charter is about to alter everyone's password?

Anyone have any real info on this?

Not that the charter.net web site is secure anyway, adding secure https access would have been a better idea. So would ssh access to the pop3 and SMTP servers, but I don't think Charter still supports this either, do they?
