[CATV] My bill is $500.38

I have only been with charter for 2 months I have Tier 1 and 2 plus all the movie channels and 2 DVR's I was told my bill would be $175 a month ok last month my bill was $217 and I understood that with all the prorated charges it may be higher, well I added MLB:EI but after seeing I wouldn't watch enough games I canceled it 2 days later (was told I had 30 days to cancel it) I was suppose to get a credit, well this month my bill was $500.38 I called charter as well chat online with charter and was told I had $238 one time charges I asked what for and was told $199 for MLB:EI and $29.99 for an install charge adding the second DVR.

I then explained I had canceled MLB:EI but they were no help so I reached out to charter on Facebook they then had an upper Management call me on Tuesday he said he would look in to getting me a $199 credit since I never got a credit told me he would call me back Wed and I got no call he then called yesterday left a messege saying he was still looking into it and would call me back today and I still haven't got a call.

I just feel like I am getting the run around and I don't know what else to do.

Charter Business vs. Residential

Just wondering if anyone out there has switched over to Charter Business from residential to save money over the long-term. Specifically at least TV and Internet.

My current promotion is about up and from what I have been reading it is unlikely they will give me another promotion. I have been happy with Charter but a 50% increase in my bill is ridiculous.

If you have switched over charter business, how long of a contract did you sign? 3 years, 5 years? What price/package did you get with your contract? Do you know if you can get premium channels on Charter Business?

Or if you have recently renegotiated your promotion successfully what is the going rate, since they don't advertise it or post it on their website anymore?

Thanks!

Best new modem for Charter (California)

I saw that parts of California are starting to get 8 channels downstream, so I want to go ahead and upgrade my modem.

Currently I'm using a Motorola Surfboard 6120. My first inclination is to buy a new Motorola modem (like the 6180) since that's what I'm used to (and I like that most of the settings are least VIEWABLE online.)

However, I want to get the best modem that works well with Charter. I want a modem they're going to keep firmware up-to-date, etc.

Any thoughts, suggestions, etc.? Thanks!

[Speed Issues] Can't Use Internet Speed Test

I have two computers. On my main computer, the one the Ubee modem is connected to, I can not even complete the Charter test. I get a red error message. On my other computer, the test works fine, and download speed is 21.96 Mbps. Why can I complete the speed test on one computer and not the other?

Tom Rutledge supports Television Consumer Freedom Act

Charter supports legislation proposing ‘a la carte’ cable
Page ImagePage Content
Senator John McCain has proposed legislation that aims to address key issues facing the cable television industry, and he has our support. The senator recently introduced the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013, which seeks to give consumers the ability to purchase individual cable channels known as “a la carte” cable TV. "We applaud Senator McCain for introducing the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013,” says CEO and President Tom Rutledge.

"It is clear that consumers are being forced to purchase content that they don't want or need,” Rutledge says. “The tying together of networks by programming giants, combined with a lack of consistency in pricing for distributors and a complete lack of transparency surrounding that pricing, creates a no-win situation for consumers, who are forced to purchase large bundles of program content at prices that continue to escalate despite the myriad alternatives enabled by current technology. Giving consumers more choice in this difficult economic climate is the right regulatory path, and Senator McCain's proposed legislation is a logical step in that direction,” says Rutledge.

According to Senator McCain, the bill has three principal objectives:

1.encourage the wholesale and retail ‘unbundling’ of programming by distributors and programmers;
2.establish consequences if broadcasters choose to ‘downgrade’ their over-the-air service; and
3.eliminate the sports blackout rule for events held in publicly-financed stadiums.“My legislation would eliminate regulatory barriers to a la carte by freeing-up multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) – like, cable, satellite and others offering video services – to offer any video programming service on an a la carte basis,” McCain says.

On the Senate floor he concluded his remarks by saying, “In the end, the Television Consumer Freedom Act is about giving the consumer more choices when watching television.”

Inconsistent internet with new Charter Cable modem

Brief History:

I had 15 MBPS internet from Charter and had zero issues (ran wireless through a Cisco E4200 Router).

I upgraded to their 30 MBPS plan and they sent me a new modem in order for me to actually get this speed. Now I do get 30 MBPS most of the time, but my connection seems to drop off significantly during prime time.. I ran one speed test and my connection came to 1 MBPS... If it works at all. It doesn't stay like this for long until it goes back to 30 MBPS.

The main issue is playing game... obviously you can't play anything with an inconsistent connection like this.

Keeping in mind everything worked FINE with my old modem as far as the router goes... Charter is wanting to blame this problem on my router. When I call them they ask that I plug my modem directly into the computer. I have not left it plugged in to the computer for a significant period of time to see if it does the same thing but I am sure it would.

I am not sure what to do since Charter is pointing to the fact that I am getting 30 MBPS connection and basically ignoring the inconsistency issue.

Please help!

Thanks

[HSI] Think i'll be calling the Death Star!

Wow, I've been up here in SC for 3 months now and I am rarely off because of the way I'm set up here. Anyhow, this is about the 15th time my internet has been down in one way or another in the little bit of time I'm here. Wonder what happens when I'm not here? [/Rant]

This is new, and something that I personally haven't seen before and wondered if someone could help me identify what's going on here since Charter is playing dumb and "There are no system issues at this time, but I can't see your modem."

BTW, TV is working fine.

[HSI] WTF Charter.. Stop giving me a hard time

I live in a neighborhood that once had Alabama Broadband in it. Earlier this year Charter bought them. However, Alabama Broadband did not go all the way down my street..(newer neighborhood..) I saw a charter truck giving service on the street that leads to mine, I stopped and talked to him and he told me to call Charter and have them do a survey for my area.. I called Charter and they said my address was "serviceable" and I can order services.. I explained to them I don't have cable out there and she said she sees people on my street that have it and it shouldn't be a problem. That was on last Tuesday.. On Wednesday the installer came out saying that there wasn't a tab near me and the closet tap is .2 miles away and he needed to get a survey done. Also said that with this many houses it shouldn't be an issue and to reschedule my appointment for Monday. I said ok.. He said it would be on Thursday.. I said ok.. Called Thursday night to check the status.. they said the work order was till open.. called Friday and they said the work order was still open.. Called Saturday... was told it was going to happen on Monday.. I called Sunday because I need to know if I needed to take out work on Monday.. She didn't really know whole lot.. Is still plan on taking off this afternoon to see if they are going to be able to install it.. but is this something normally Charter would do? Run a tap .2 miles on the same day as install? How do they know if it is going to be worth their money to do so? Won't they take days to complete?

[HSI] Slow Night Time Speeds Northern Nevada

Since getting Charter Internet service a year ago I never had good night time speeds. They were always in the 10-12 Mbps range. Daytime has always been spot on. I accepted this as a status quo as I could live with that level.

But the last few months I noticed signs of very low speeds (like 5 hours to download a Garmin GPS map update) so I started to run and keep a record of my speeds both AM and PM.

After two weeks my night time speeds average about 4.5 Mbps with lows hitting 1.5 Mbps. So I finally called and they sent a guy out and of course there was nothing to do. In refreshing honesty he did say the area (Reno And Carson City NV) was suffering overload problems. They are "working on it" and it has been discussed at weekly meetings. They are ordering new equipment he says.

I don't expect any help on this as its a typical overload issue and there is nothing that can be done except to turn up the heat to get them to move faster.

What this post is about is trying to get others in the area suffering from this problem to help each other by complaining and hopefully get Charter to step up their efforts.

This is my first step by posting here. I plan on calling the BBB, demanding Charter give credit for bad service, writing the local government and state agencies and making a lot of noise. I hope if you are in this area and having similar problems you will join in the fun. :)

[Speed Issues] Unacceptable slow speeds during prime time

I know this issue is being discussed in other threads, so I thought you might be interested in an update based on my experience with CS on Sunday night.

After a couple of hours on the phone, I finally lost my patience and asked to talk to a supervisor. After it was all said and done, she gave me her email address and said that she would try to serve as an intermediary with a higher level technician.

Honestly, I have no idea if anything will come of it; however, I thought I would share my email with all of you.

quote:This email is being sent after a conversation on Sunday evening, February 25. The technical customer support supervisor requested that I send her an email directly with my issues and corresponding data. (I apologize that I cannot remember her name.)

My name is [EDIT], my address is [EDIT], Grover Beach, CA 93433. My security code is [EDIT]. My IP is [EDIT]. I have been with Charter high speed internet since 2008 (first in Turlock, California and now in Grover Beach, California.) I am an advanced user with experience using cable modems since the early 2000s.

Here is a synopsis of my issue:
1.	My Internet DOWNLOAD speeds are reduced to a *very* slow rate from approximately 5-7 p.m. until around midnight local time. During this time, I rarely get above 5.0 Mbps download speeds, with most speedtest results being around 2-3 Mbps. (This compares to 25-35 Mbps during other times of the day.)
2.	UPLOAD speeds do not seem to be affected. I am getting a solid upload rate all hours of the day.
3.	This issue has been persistent (every night) for approximately 3-4 months. I had been hoping it would be resolved by now, but it appears as though Charter is unaware of the issue.

Now, I’m very well aware that I cannot expect 30 Mbps during prime time. However, I do expect to be somewhere in the 15-20 range (50-60%), especially given that I am paying a special surcharge for higher speeds. Prior to this issue becoming a problem, I was always slowing down during the 6-midnight timeframe; however, it was somewhere around 15-20 Mbps. 2-5 Mbps is just not acceptable for a solid 5-6 hours every day.

Please note that I have found multiple conversations on this issue on a forum for advanced users. These threads indicate an almost identical problem to what I’m talking about. And, I think there are users here in my area of California in specific (NOTE: the URL says ‘dslreports’ however, the forum is specifically about “Charter Internet/TV”)

Now, it’s pretty obvious to me that there is a capacity problem affecting my area of California. I’m not sure if it’s a small radius or a large radius; however, clearly there is something that needs to be fixed. As I mentioned before, I know that getting really high speeds at night is not really possible with the current infrastructure; but, I do think that getting 50-60% of what I’m paying for is something that I should be able to expect.

My hope is that you will forward this email to a high level technician that can review the data that I am providing (at the bottom of this email, below my signature) and that he/she will be able to quickly see the problem and dispatch someone to fix it, either by adding capacity (hardware) or adjusting software settings on your end.

If you, or anyone else at Charter needs additional information, or if your technicians would like to contact me directly, I am happy to provide any data needed. I know that direct contact with high level technicians is akin to a conversation with God; however, in this instance I think it might be the best way to isolate this problem and determine the best course of action. I feel that having a low level technician visit my residence in the middle of the day would do no good at all.

Thanks,

[EDIT]

========================================================
Below is data that I gathered in the past 24 hours using http://speedtest.charter.com If you look closely at the timestamps, you can see the issue that I am describing very clearly. If you want additional days’ worth of data, please let me know. (NOTE: Unfortunately I could not be home before 9:30ish tonight, and I started fairly late the night before, so this particular set of data does not include the slow speeds from about 5-9 p.m. For your reference, the speeds are pretty consistent from about 5 or 6 p.m. until around 11:30 p.m/midnight.)

Also, this tool does not provide “packet loss” information; however, in all my ping tests, I have noticed no packet loss at all. Latency is very high at times; however, I’m never showing time-outs or packet loss. So, I’m thinking this is probably not a routing issue (but, I’m not an expert on that subject.)
