Voice and gaming suck on Clear - Sprint 4G? HAHAHA

I've been using Skype the past week and there's no way Clear could be thinking of using this network for voice. The latency is so bad, there's huge delays in conversation and drop outs. Like everyone else with WiMAX, the ping to the first hop is 50ms and higher, and the very best rating I get from pingtest.net is borderline B rating, VoIP can suffer and videogames. So I've been videogaming, playing Quake Live and the only servers I can compete on with Clear are the Seattle servers that I get 70ms pings to. SF, LA, Chicago, Dallas, all these other servers my 100ms+ ping makes me easy picking for the other players. I could go back to Comcast and get 20ms pings to these same servers, but I'm stuck in a location currently where I can't get a wired connection. One thing that stumps me is why the Clearwire customers, who use similar and less sophisticated technology than WiMAX, are able to get 2-3ms pings to the first hop and pings on average, 40ms lower than Clear. Information from wimax.com suggestions there's a huge latency performance problem with Clear WiMAX.

quote:Quality of Service (QoS) is what determines if a wireless technology can successfully deliver high value services such as voice and video. The chief detractors from good QoS are latency, jitter and packet loss. Solve these issue and you have a carrier-grade service. Very simply put, WiMAX offers a very low latency across the wireless span. Most ven-dors have products where latency is less than 10 milliseconds from base station to CPE (and vice versa). To put this in perspective, latency must be measured end-to-end. VoIP, for example, is highly susceptible to latency. If latency exceeds 150 milliseconds for ex-ample, the quality of the conversation begins to drag. At or above 200 milliseconds many listeners may find a conversation unintelligible.

In the case of WiMAX, the large majority of latency will not occur on the air link be-tween subscriber and base station but rather on the wired portion of the connection be-tween the subscriber and what ever the "other end" might be (web site server, IPTV server or VoIP called party). The figure below illustrates how any latency on the wireless portion of a network is minimal relative to that on the wired portion of a network.
So what's the problem with Clear?

[General] Read the fine print!!!

A word of warning.
When I signed up for Clear I was told that I could cancel my account at any time, with no kind of early termination fee. Kind of important when you're signing up for a relatively new and unproven technology, and a major factor in me signing up in the first place. Finally, I found an ISP that's easy to deal with, straight forward and no-nonsense.

Well, I was wrong. Turns out they signed me up for some kind of long-term contract and put all the cancellation fee terminology into the Terms of Service Agreement (you know, that window that pops up with a months worth of reading every time you install something).

Fast forward less than a year later and I'm done with the crappy speeds and drop off service even with 3 or 4 lights on the modem (good reception), and I call to cancel the service. After about 4 hours of arguing and reiterating my feeling of being swindled the best I could get out of them was to drop the $88 ETF to the $35 signup fee.

Now I know it's not a relatively large amount of money (Quest DSL tried to squeeze almost $200 out of me) but the principal sucks. A company offers up a spotty, unproven internet service to a nervous customer who wants to be able to opt out if the service proves unreliable and straight up LIE about the feasibility of doing so. Had they been straightforward and even a little conscientious in their business practices I would have had no problem jumping back on the Clear wagon when the technology got to a workable standard (which, let me tell you - it currently is NOT) .

Clear is a shady, shady company with a sub-par product. Don't be a sucker like I was.

They should of put a external antenna port on the modem....

Right now im only get 1 bar on my clear motorola home modem. A quick fix would of getting a external antenna and hooking it up to the modem but theres no antenna ports on the modem so now im going to have to find a solution. Right now I got a plastic weatherproof enclosure that im going to try outside after finding out the clear tower is NW from me about 3.5 miles. I will post the results and pics of this enclosure that some co workers made for me but Im just wondering does anyone have any tips or tricks for the modem other then putting it near a window and turning it quarter turns till you get the best signal?

Thanks.

Just an idea i did with my customers when signal is weak!!

Direc TV or Dish Network dish and good LnB, rg cabling back to device needing a boost. Variable wattage amp connected, rg cabling to foil and then point the dish at the original signal.

I would start the amp at 2 wats and work your way up until you are good with results.

There are other options rather than the foil, you just gotta look for some answers on the net.

High Gain antenna mesh is another answer that works great.........

[General] Anyone using Vonage with CLEAR WiMAX?

Anyone using Vonage with CLEAR WiMAX?

I am a CLEAR WiMAX reseller and I have a customer that is having issues getting Vonage VOIP service to work with their new CLEAR WiMAX internet service.

Does anyone out there have this working in a similar configuration? I know I need to do a lot more homework on Vonage but I thought this would be one place to start.

An Alternative Answer is CLEAR WiMAX VoIP:

Any vacation hold option?

I haven't been in town in a while and won't be using it for a few months (for sure), does Clear offer any form of vacation service? I once remember being told there was (over the phone), but I'm not sure if that applies to those on contracts too or not.

Does it? :)

GPS on Clear?

So, Sprint's equivalent USB modem, the Franklin U300, is the equivalent to Clear's USB modem, the Franklin CMU300. While the hardware is identical, Sprint offers GPS when connected with 3G and its Sprint SmartView software while Clear makes no mention of GPS anywhere on its website.

Does anyone know of any open source software that could unlock the potential of our Clear USB modems?

I would love to have turn-by-turn GPS navigation!

Clear in Seattle

I received a Clear modem in Seattle today.
I have 5 bars and for a while I had 8 meg downloads.

I have comcast with several voip aplications plugged into my router.

I unplugged comcast and replaced the modem with the Clear modem.

Pings are around 200ms. My speeds are dropping like crazy.

My Sprint Airave wont connect at all.
