Switching to Boost or Straight Talk

Yep...time to say bye bye to Cingular and all the high priced carriers. Boost is 50 bucks for everything and Straight Talk is 45 bucks. Straight talk also has a 30 buck plan that gives you 1000 min etc. Either of these beats my 550 min plan with cingular for around 60 bucks. My wife and I can get the $30 dollar Straight Talk plan for each of us for the same price we are paying for Cingular. Actually Cingular is more when you tack on fees and the charge for the extra line. I know some whine about the customer service and other little problems but the price is right. I also get unlimited text with the $45 Straight talk plus internet. I can't wait.

Anyone else make the switch? I like the phone that I can get with Straight Talk. Samsung R451C Phone

[SERIOUS] Huge gas explosion at Middletown,CT power plant

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35283135/ns/us_news/
A large explosion at a power plant on Sunday has killed an unknown number of people and injured many others, officials report.

Black smoke was seen billowing the plant along the banks of the Connecticut River.

Middletown police told NBC News that the explosion was 'huge' and there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The fire department said they were dispatching crews to the scene.

The explosion happened around 11:30 a.m. at the Kleen Energy Plant on River Road.
[House&Home] Demons as pets in Connecticut

My son was trying to take a picture of our pet cats. Until this picture we assumed they were very affectionate Siamese kitties. Now it appears they are either possessed, demonic, or our Palm Pre needs a red eye reduction feature. I thought it was worth sharing. What do you think?

[SERIOUS] Looking for an old Dell XP capable desktop (P4 or late

I'm trying to help out at my daughters school, which is a private religious school. The economy has not been good, and registration is down a bit. Spare cash doesn't exist.

My efforts have been to help replace older PC's (old W2K systems mostly) with slightly newer PC's. These would be desktops (no monitor needed).

If anyone has a working Dell desktop PC P4 or later, with 512MB of RAM or more, and a 5GB or larger hard drive with CD rom, integrated VGA video adapter and ethernet for donation, please IM me.

I am trying to find XP capable machines. I will re-install either XP Home or XP Pro based on the capabilities of the machine.

I'm in the Danbury area, but will be happy to drive a bit if you don't mind offering a working XP capable desktop PC.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

[House&Home] A note about shopping at Sears, Target, Wal-Mart, B

Recently I've been shopping at Sears using Bing cashback. You order online at sears.com connecting to it via bing.com and get a variable discount (usually from 8-20%). You must register with bing (who is owned by Microsoft) and always go to the site you want the discount from via a bing cashback link.

Today I got notice of cashback on a 20 cu ft upright freezer I bought online. The freezer was online and in store at 20% off and cost $758 (total) when ordered online, the total would have been the same at the Danbury Sears store. I was able to schedule the delivery date just as if I were in the store. Instead of the sales person picking the date, there was a pop up screen and I got to pick the date.

The good part, is today I got confirmation that $143 was coming back from Bing cashback. Sears took $714 of my sale and price (which was the price of the freezer AND the cost of delivery and pickup of my old freezer) then took 20% off that.

It isn't quite 40% off, but it's not bad. 20% off from the store then another 20% off the discounted price of the appliance plus 20% off the non-discounted delivery / pick up fee.

Sears runs 20% off sales intermittently, but if you need an appliance, the Bing deal is better than the friends and family night deal. As the F&F is only 10% off and doesn't discount delivery and haul away.

After Bing cashback, my cost for a 20 cu ft upright Freezer with all taxes, delivery and haul away fees will be $614, that isn't bad IMO. Even the normal 8% bing cashback is about as good as a friends and family night.

This has worked fine for me on 3 purchases, 2 were picked up at the Danbury Mall Sears, one was the delivered freezer. If you need anything from an appliance to detergent, it may at least be worth considering any possible bing discounts when doing a comparison. Note, Target does variable 3-7%, Wal-Mart only 2%, BestBuy variable 5-15%, Home Depot 5%, Barnes & Noble 10% (plus free shipping).

A Bing cashback is similar to a rebate, but without any paperwork. 60 days after purchase, you ask Microsoft (Bing) to either cut you a check, or to directly deposit into your checking account. For me checks have arrived in less than a week after request. Bing doesn't stack with some coupons and some sales. Often it at least covers the sales tax (usually a bit more).

[INFO] Saw a movie in Danbury today ... it was way too loud

I haven't been to see a movie in a few years at a theater (I think it was a Harry Potter movie, maybe #3 at the Newtown town hall theater). Today I couldn't resist and saw Avatar, new 3D technology seemed worth giving the theater a shot. I went the the Lowes Cinema by exit 7/8 (off I84).

Avatar was great, wonderful story, and the 3D effects were everything I could have hoped for.

Unfortunately the loudness of the sound system was difficult to take. I don't know how loud it was, but after a while it was painful to watch the remainder of the movie as it was just too darn loud.

We got there late, and it was a very good idea, the Danbury Lowes ran 18 minutes of previews before the movie began. If anyone is interested its a great movie, but unless you like very loud sound, avoid the Danbury Lowes cinema.

Bernie's files Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Bernies plans to close all stores.

Bernie's files Chapter 11 bankruptcy
By Cara Baruzzi, Register Business Editor

Amid mounting speculation that it would, Bernie’s has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to close all of its stores, according the company’s long-time attorney.

Bloomfield-based lawyer Marc Needelman said Bernie’s, which operates 15 stores including eight in Connecticut, fell victim to the weak economy and its effect on retail sales.

The company, headquartered in Enfield, is taking steps to protect its customers, he said, and is seeking permission from the bankruptcy court to honor customer deposits, gift cards and rebates.

All extended warranties sold by Bernie’s are with a third-party insurer and will continue to be honored.

In addition, Bernie’s is asking the court to allow it to begin going-out-of-business sales at all 15 of its stores throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Company officials plan to close all store locations, Needelman said, though it was unclear Thursday how soon they would close.

In Greater New Haven, Bernie’s has locations at 305 Boston Post Road in Orange and 410 Universal Drive in North Haven.

Rumors of a pending bankruptcy filing mounted this week, particularly after an online trade publication reported the company has pulled out of a Long Island-based buying group of 11 retailers which is it had been part of for years. This Week in Consumer Electronics quoted NATM Buying Corp. President Bill Trawick as saying Bernie’s is struggling financially.

The trade publication also said two of Bernie’s top three executives have left the company, as have many buyers. Mike Honeyman, the company’s president and chief operating officer, left the company soon after John Schlenner, a vice president of marketing and merchandising.

Those two were top executives behind Milton Rosenberg, Bernie’s chief executive officer.

Rosenberg’s father, Bernie, founded the business in a Hartford gas station in 1947. It grew to become New England’s largest independent retailer of televisions and appliances.

The company was sold in 1986 to Newmark & Lewis of Hicksville, N.Y. Later, when that company went bankrupt in 1991, Milton Rosenberg bought back the Bernie’s name and, once again, grew the company from one store, starting with a location in Springfield, Mass.
