Flapping routers

Don't use this ISP if you depend on your connectivity for anything. This
past month our DSL has gone down every Sunday. It currently has been
down for over 12 hours. Outages last anywhere from 1 hour to 12 hours or
more. Their support staff are not there on the weekend and during the
week they have one support person who has to handle anything. I signed
up to have my DNS hosted by them and I had to get on the phone and
hand-hold them through the records so they were correct. Took a week and
a half to get the MX record correct. Their staff are very nice once you
finally reach someone, but it is definately a "mom and pop" type
organization and not reliable.

impeccable

I signed up with DSL Designs about a year ago. The guy at the tech support line got me going in minutes and the service has been extremely stable since! There have been the occasional outages - Most due to the phone company - But much fewer than I had with my dialup service and the support staff were highly responsive. No busy signals, the price is low and the speeds are awesome - I can not imagine going back to dialup.

My favorite DSL ISP!

After trying in vain to get DSL for months, I found DSL Designs who got me on and running in two weeks!! When I read about the agony of DSL (especially from Pac Bell), I smile and I wonder why everyone doesn't use DSL Designs, Inc.!

Along with their reliability, their extra features (streaming video, Yahoo Broadcast and many others) make them a standout in the supplier of Broadband services!

Re: My favorite DSL ISP!

Maybe its because the address they give on their website is actually a convalescent hospital.

Re: My favorite DSL ISP!

16603 Lark Ave. is across the street from the Hospital. The address is clearly marked. Please call if you have trouble finding us. We will be happy to give you directions.

Re: My favorite DSL ISP!

You're at an opening in the fence across the freeway on ramp from the hospital. It would probably be easier to find if it was actually on Lark Ave.

Another reason why "everyone doesn't use DSL Designs, Inc" is that its not possible. You take orders for services that you can't provide and then have no status updates or any way to see how the order is doing. After 5 visits from PacBell to put the wires in, now NorthPoint says their DSLAM is full, so why did they take the order??? None of the services offerings on DSL Designs web site match the offerings when you call. The part of DSL Designs you can actually talk to is apparently in Tucson, Arizona, not Los Gatos, California. I recently found out the DSL Designs is actually a reseller of Zyan who is being sued by one of their other resellers for disconnecting all of their customers and has no qualms about cutting DSL Designs out of the deal if I would like to go direct with them. DSL Designs has almost no status on the job; Zyan has no status; NorthPoint has some status, but its almost impossible to get it out of them because most of their people will only tell an ISP what's going on; PacBell has a lot of difficulty figuring out which order it is because there are 3 companies between me and PacBell and the orders aren't tracked by phone number. You tell people that DSL will be installed in 2-3 weeks, but then you use NorthPoint who says they can't do anything to speed up the process until it has been 8 weeks.

Apparently you can only get positive reviews from people who work for you as evidenced by the @dsldesigns.com email address instead of @dsldesigns.net.

Re: My favorite DSL ISP!

I was a customer for serval months before I was an employee. DSL Designs was the only ISP offering DSL at a reasonable price in my home area. The installation was on schedule and my service has been more stable than any of the dialup services I have used.

Are they completely toast?

Like all the other Verizon-based DSL customers, I've had no service since Monday, and the DSL Designs "support" line just says "service is out due to a 'discrepancy' with Verizon". I called Verizon tech support, who verified that all DSL Designs customers were suspended.

I'm about ready to call Verizon and have the service moved to them. Any thoughts from other users?

Yo, They didn't pay their bill to Verizon. Also, word on the street is they are trying to get all their stuff outa the office after hours.
Someone has all the info and some pics of the kids and their cars from last night, I goto get ahold of that, im sure the police and the Better Business Beureau would love to meet them.!

Verizon said that they were "completely full" in Los Gatos and couldn't offer me service (though they did say that they'd have availability after they could reclaim lines from DSL Designs), so I've ordered from Speakeasy.

nodsl_now

@cisco.com
Nobody can switch the DSL service until they are
disconnected from your existing telephone. That is
the response I get from Verizon... they can't even
cancel my existing telephone line.

I've heard that they have 30 days by law to disconnect
you. But you have to notify them, I've called, faxed,
emailed, even stopped by their office. I guess I'll
be holding on to that bill I just received.

Anyone know how to get disconnected immediately, or
officially start that 30day clock ticking?

Looks like dialup time, meanwhile, it's time to flush
them out and hunt them down. Hiding from customers is
not acceptable.

My DSL Designs service was on my second phone line, so I don't have to wait for them to release the line -- I ordered the new service on my primary line. That didn't help with Verizon...they still say they're "full" for now, so it'll be interesting to see if Speakeasy can come through for me quickly.

I'm planning to send a certified letter to DSL Designs to officially cancel service; I've already stopped the automatic payment authorization with my credit card company.

Their status page (»web.dsldesigns.com/mrtg/router1/···3_0.html) shows a lot of traffic on their upstream link; wonder how long before that link gets pulled?

Just called their "service" line again, and the message says (as of 2:45pm Pacific 17 April):
The Judge has ruled. All DSL Designs Verizon DSL lines will be turned back on as soon as possible. Worst-case ETA is noon 18 April.
They also say they'll be fully-staffed tomorrow.

We'll see.

Mine's still out. Nobody is answering their phones. Haven't had internet access for over a week now. This provider is horrendous. Stay far far away. As soon as I get a hold of somebody, I am processing a disconnect request.

Losing my ISP??

Soon after I moved to CA from TN in 2000, I was burned in the Northpoint/Verio crash, and I'm still queasy about Covad since I was connected through one of their "modems." I did the panic looking for alternate ISP and there wasn't much choice despite that I am only a matter of feet from the Verizon CO... and I'm close to town! Anyway that's how I came to be a DSL Designs subscriber. I must say that when service is up it's pretty good. I am charged $128/month for 768/768 allocation (although when I tested speed today it came back at 360). But service can go down almost any time. In the beginning support was pretty good too, but then the CEO/founders moved to AZ (that's where I send the check) and I haven't been able to speak to a live human for months. It's a sad state of affairs when you have to find out about your ISP from reading the newspaper. The Los Gatos Weekly Times (www.lgwt.com) of 4/23/03 clarifies the "issues" which were reported on the tech line message machine last week (the whole Chapter 11 bit is scary). Since I was out of town for most of the outage, I only "lost" about 24 hrs. I maintain redundant access with an XO (formerly Concentric) dial up and I pay more than that is worth (XO only offers biz broadband). I am going to need some help choosing a new ISP if DSL goes down for good. I am looking at SpeakEasy, Covad, A-Link Network, and Bay Area Internet Solns if they can provide service in my area. I don't mind paying a fair price if I can only get reliable service and access to support. Seeking a long term relationship with a stable and profitable company.
Anyone got any ideas??

Re: Losing my ISP??

I do have an idea for you. As a foreword, this advice is shamelessly commercial, but here goes.

I work for a company called Transbay(.net), and lately we've been receiving a lot of phone calls inquring about our DSL service in Los Gatos. I honestly sympathize with customers that have been shut down and cannot get a hold of a live person at their ISP. At home (San Francisco), I have PacBell/SBC DSL, so it's easy for me to empathize with Los Gatos people who have their DSL go kaput. Our pricing is typical for DSL, but we shine in the fact that our customer service is top-notch. When our phone rings, it is almost surely a sales opportunity, and very rarely, it's a support issue such as someone's computer crashing, and they forgot the ip address or something of that nature. Obviously, I can't be objective, but I do know that we are stable, profitable, have been in business since 1986; in business since 1997 as an ISP. We do the whole gamut from dial-up & DSLto ultra high-speed wireless internet access. Since most of the people we talk with are using Fujitsu DSL modems, we are waiving our setup fee for DSL, bringing people over, and getting them up and running as soon as Verizon can re-activate their line.

I think Los Gatos DSL customers that have been recently left out in the cold by their isp should try Transbay.net.

As an experiment, call us during business hours, a human will answer the phone. In the case that your DSL went down during non-business hours, our outgoing voice message has our technician's cell phone# on it, so you can still get a hold of someone.

Please forgive me for this commercial posting, but many customers are being screwed and I am in a position to stop that.

I just activated Speakeasy on my other phone line; I called them last Thursday and the line was ready and running when my DSL modem arrived this morning.

My speeds seem slightly slower than the DSL Designs line (maybe 5%), but the idea of being able to reach a human being at any hour is very appealing. And if I'm lucky, I'll never have to call them anyway

Is DSL Designs still in business?

Does anyone know if DSL Designs is still in business? No one answers their phones and their home page seems to be down. When you try it you get the following error message:

Warning: main() [function.main]: php_hostconnect: connect failed in /home/neilr/public_html/index.php on line 52

Warning: main(»dsldesigns.com/header.php) [function.main]: failed to create stream: No route to host in /home/neilr/public_html/index.php on line 52

Fatal error: main() [function.main]: Failed opening required '»dsldesigns.com/header.php' (include_path='') in /home/neilr/public_html/index.php on line 52

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows what's going on. Thanks.

My DSL connection is down for over 4 days already, tried to call DSL Designs (support, sales, billing). Nobody picks up and the billing voicemail box is full. Their office is on my way home, will stop by today to check out what's going on....

Got an e-mail this afternoon that Verizon has pulled the plug. Tomorrow is the day they are done.

ONLY if you pay your entire bill to DSLDesigns, so I pay $50/month to them (I'm classified as a wholesale subscriber) so I lose out. If you pay $17 to DslDesigns and $32 to Verizon - you are supposedly ok - FOR NOW!

hope this helps

A new [LOCAL!] company is being formed that hopefully will pick up the pieces. Verizon won't assist with migrations, so everyone is SOL.

Let me know if you are interested in a wireless setup.

Just got a call (Fri, 6/26, 1530 hrs) from Roy at Silicon Valley Internet (garlic.com) in San Martin claiming that DSL Designs was 1) bankrupt, 2) discontinuing all service "soon", and 3) pulling the plug. He claimed that he was "authorized" to solicit all DSLD customers to switch to SVI post-haste. I received e-mail service agreement from James Alexander in SVI sales and I intend to subscribe as soon as I can verify a few facts. SVI pricing seems reasonable and I will check their reputation here on Broadband reports.
I had no problems with DSLD except for occasional down time which was a nuisance but not critical. When the line was up it was great. Service was not exactly terrific, but who needs service if it's working?
I need my DSL! I am tired of living on the edge.

DON'T SIGN UP WITH SVI!!! Verizon offers a better package for $34.95 a month. Once your line is released - they will give you 1st month free, next 3 for $29.95, then $34.95 after that! 1.5MB download with 128KB upload!

I got the same call froom SVI, they were too eager to get people signed so I looked at Verizon's site.

Also, SVI hasn't had the best reviews and I know someone that had them and finally switched to earthlink.

Just a FYI

Re: Is DSL Designs still in business?

I'm trying to sign up with Verizon, but they say I can't because I already have DSL. It sounds like DSL Designs still needs to do something to release my line. Anybody else come across this problem? Also, I tried calling SVI to see if they could do something about it, and every phone number they have gives a busy signal. Will this ever end?!

SVI

@216.139.x.x
You are somewhat right

Remember the old saying: Cheap, reliable, fast. Pick two. If you want cheap then SVI is probably not the way to go.

I apologize if the lines are busy. Needless to say, trying to connect all these customers has us going crazy. Verizon is only allowing us to do so many customers per day.

We do have open DSL slots and can handle requests. We are also adding another T3 to the internet to handle the load.

Drop a line to info@garlic.com if you have questions.

I have my server colocated at DSLDesigns and I have no way of getting it back. I drove all the way down there today (2 and a half hours) from santa rosa to see if i could catch someone but door was closed and there was a note there. I wouldn't really worry if i were a DSL customer cause i could just disconnect and use someone else but I have a 2000 dollar server over there that I no longer have access to. If any of DSLDesign's techs are reading this, please e-mail me at arvand@sbcglobal.net If anyone else can help me regarding this matter please let me know.

How can we get DSL Designs to release our phone lines so we can get alternative service??

DSL Designs emails are down, no phone support, and their partner does not know how to release the lines.

Any ideas? Can we call Verizon and authorize release ourselves?

dslless

@proofpoint.com
I signed up with SVI, but have not heard anything from them for a week. There phone lines are busy and no respond to any email. I have a feeling SVI is just another DSLDesigns, a bunch of amateurs trying to run a service. Does anyone knows if Verizon provides you with a static IP address?

dslless

@proofpoint.com
Since SVI internet does not give me any information about the status of my order, I called Verizon myself; appearenly DSLDesigns is removing their equipment from the co-lo on monday and thus allowing other to install their equipment.... Seems the Verizon deal is pretty good, way cheaper than SVI, only they don't give you a static IP address.

Trying to get service up soon!

DSL Designs is trying to get service up ASAP. Thanks to the great support of Jacob Cooper, former worker of DSL Designs and now owner of CoopLabs whose taking over all the linesm, is in the process of setting up a temporary backbone connection. They are working as fast as possible, and service should be restored soon.

Jacobs trying as hard as possible, so please have some patience as for the last 9 hours, work was going on to get your connection up. Calls after Calls, after Calls, deals, after deals, after deals.
