| | A bit of BritSys confusion... I am currently living in the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina, and I have been using Bellsouth 1.5/256 aDSL for about 4 and a half years. I have, obviously, liked the service thus far, and have never had any problems. Speeds have been VERY constant, and I get good pings to gaming servers. However, just the other day I stumbled upon BritSys, the new light in my eyes. I was attracted to their 1.5/768 for $45 a month package, since I am paying $55 NOW for a 256 upstream. I went to britsys' prequalification script (»prequal.britsys.com/prequal/prequal.jsp) and I ran the test. Unfortunetly, I am not able to get Worldcom dsl, according to that. According to this (»Company entry - Dedicated Network Solutions LLC) worldcom is the only one providing my desired package.
Here's my confusion part... what exactly is BritSys doing? If I am buying the DSL from worldcom, why am I doing this through BritSys? Do all small-scale ISPs buy their DSL service from larger corporations, then sell it to consumers? Also, is there any possibility that Worldcom IS available where I live, and I'd be able to get my 768?
Don't get me wrong, like I said earlier, I love my current connection. It has been more reliable than anything I have ever owned. And I am very involved with gaming (on a competitive level) so pings are important to me, that's the only reason I would even consider changing service. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

There are 2 types of Wcom resellers, some connect you to a wcom site locally, some shuttle you off to a pop that is regional. In my case, Britsys has a local site right here in town. | | | I'm no expert, but to your original question, yes all DSL providers resell other services to you. You can't buy DSL directly from Covad or Worldcom, I don't think, though Covad, I know, runs one of the major networks. Another major DSL backbone co. went out of business a few years ago: Northpoint? Anyway, the game all along has been a dance between the retailler (your ISP), the backbone provider, and your local telephone co, all of which have to get to the same page eventually. Which is why it used to take weeks (sometimes months) to get a connection up (I haven't done it lately, don't know if it's improved).

The Cable Buster! Hmmm pricing and speed sound excellent. Lets talk about the package. Worldcom is offered by a couple of your Competitors in our area. One Competitor offers 5 email addresses and 1 static IP and the other offers 15 email addresses and 5 static IP's. With the first one you can sign up for 18 months and get service for 39.00 per month. With the second its month to month for 49.00. So, I ask, Why not dare to be different. Lets see 44.00 per month w/ 12 month term, 3 Static IP addresses and 10 email boxes. No installation fee or setup fee and free equipment. This would position you right between the two worldcom Competitors in our area. (Lagrange/Brookfield, IL.) Come on, What do you say guys ready to talk turkey?

I guess as far as the email and IP's go? Who doesn't want the most they can get for there money. I suppose when you leave the office at the end of the day and stop at store your not looking for the most expensive item with the least amount of product. It's human nature I guess. I personally could find a use. Web pages, FTP, Gaming and such also have a large family to utilize the email. But I think of it like a rebate, just because you offer them doesn't mean everyone will use them

| | Britsys DSL? I currently have Speakeasy 768 SDSL. It's quite expensive but reliable at least. However I am wanting to get a second SDSL line to bond with via a Nexland/other router.
I have been looking at Britsys 768SDSL via a Choice One DSLAM. Dose anyone have any experience with the Choice One network? I am looking for VERY solid reliability and throughput (ie no over taxed network, down for days, etc). Or would I get a more reliable line getting the WorldCom ADSL 1500/768?
My lines are very clean so I am looking for reliability from experience of other customers. I'll gladly listen to any Britsys employees. But let me know if you are one as I want to hear customers views too.

If you qualify for the Worldcom ADSL i would recommend it as it is a solid line with excellent throughput but it does require local phone service from the ILEC.
The SDSL from Choice One is also good, we write bandwidth guarantees in all of our agreements to ensure your line is always operating as you expect it to.
We have numerous businesses on Choice One lines throughout the north east with no problems with bandwidth or outages (except some SDSL line outages from ice storms)

If the speed you saw was one of the following it means that your loop length is too long to support the 1500/768 ADSL.

I can manually qualify your loop and tell you the length in MCI's database if you wish.

Does their router pump different IP's through to the connected machine? eg, ethernet port 1 = IP 1.1.1.1, and ethernet port 2 = 1.1.1.2? I guess my question really relates to how does the server, behind the firewall, get the distinct IP addresses?

What plan did you order?
If you order is shipped with the Cisco 678 then it is configured with NAT by default.
You will need to connect a hub or switch to the cisco for multiple machines.
Once the line is up we (BritSys Support) reconfigure the Cisco remotely so that you can use all the IP's you ordered assigned directly to your servers versus using port mapping.
e.g. - Your IP's
Gateway 65.21.1.1 (Assigned to the Cisco) 1st IP 65.21.1.2 Second IP 65.21.1.3
I hope that clarifies it. Let me know if you have more questions.

| | Where to get Worldcom/Cable Buster
I am moving to Columbia Maryland, and the Cable Buster deal looks great. I don't have a phone number there yet, but I tried to prequalify some of my neighbors at britsys.com, and Worldcom came up as failed. But I see people on DSLreports from Columbia that are using MCI/Worldcom as their CLEC. So, is there anything I can do to make sure that I get a phone line that I could get the Cable Buster through? It looks like my closest wire center (according to dslreports) is CLMAMDOB, which is about 7000 feet away, so that should help.

| | Seriously looking for DSL service. Ok I was really hoping to get the Worldcom DSL service. But after a lot of searching it looks as if there is no Worldcom DSLAM in Xenia.
So that leaves me with two alternatives. I currently have a Speakeasy 768SDSL line and I'd like to get another line. I KNOW there are Covad and SBC dslams in our central office. I do not know if Choice One which reports back "Error" every time I use it. However I'm on a really tight budget so I need to find the most "up" bandwidth at a decent price.
So it looks like my next choice will be ChoiceOne 768SDSL or Covad 1.5/768ADSL. I had THOUGHT Brisys had a ClearChoice SDSL768 line in the range of $74-$79? However when I checked back it's $94? Did the price go up?
Right now I am trying to weigh in my best options.

The zyxel router supplied has NAT, DHCP, port mapping capabilites like the linksys.

If I went with the 3Mbit/384K ADSL package w/ 5 IP's how would I set that up so each computer has its own WAN IP address? (NAT?) I don't recall the Linksys router I have, being able to do such a thing.
Also, if I bought the 3Mbit/384K ADSL package and I find out that the speeds aren't 3Mbit - 20% overhead, can I just switch to the 1.5Mbps package under the same contract? (ie. not being charged for canceling service or changing service)

| | | britsysBritsys.Net Support join:2000-08-28 New York, NY | Re: How close to get 3mbit package?
It is possible that the DSLAM in your CO is not configured for the 3000/384 DSL. I can manually prequal the address if you want to IM it to me.
If you order the 5 IP package you can either assign 1 static IP to each machine of you can purchase something like a sonicwall that can handle multiple WAN IP's. Many people use a linux machine to do the same thing.
With all of our business class packages we guarantee 80% of the sync speed after 13% ATM & TCP/IP overhead.
The 3000/384 would be 2088/267 at a minimum. We have a few customers using it and getting about 2600/350 in speed tests.
There is usually a charge for downgrading the line but we may be able to get Covad to waive it if you cannot achieve decent speeds consistently through their network.

I beleive that all UUNET traffic leaves Denver via St. Louis, MS. Its just the UUNET topology.
Why would they do this when UUNET has two major access points in Denver? One is downtown and the other is in DTC.

| | Should I get Cable Buster or Residential? What is the fundamental difference between these two service levels. The money is not necessarily an issue, my company pays for my dsl connection. But whats the deal with the stunted service guarantees???
It makes me think that Britsys is going to seriously oversell their bandwidth....
|
| britsysBritsys.Net Support join:2000-08-28 New York, NY | Re: Should I get Cable Buster or Residential? Main difference is additional services included with the Residential, the physical lines are the same with all the plans but the speed guarantee levels are different.
Residential includes 5 email, Cable buster includes 1.
e.g.
If you order 1500/768k ADSL (Cable buster), you sync at 1500/768 but you are getting 700/450 speeds then we will not open a trouble ticket with MCI for speed problems as it is within SLA of 50% throughput after ATM & TCP overhead.
If you order 1500/768k ADSL Residential, you sync at 1500/768 but you are getting 700/450 speeds then we are obligated to get your speeds to 900+/550+ which is over the SLA 70% throughput after ATM & TCP overhead.
It cuts down on work for us and MCI with speed related trouble tickets which are common, and usually due to bad hardware (linksys etc..) or operating system setup.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

| | | | Re: Should I get Cable Buster or Residential? Are we talking about sync speed or actual throughput? If the latter, how do you guys measure throughput?
One more thing, if you can help me. Can you verify the fax number to send in my order? I tried sending my order in yesterday but the fax wouldn't pick up.
I'm thinking I'll get the residential service, since a 900/500 SLA is definitely worth the extra 15 bux or whatever. Do you credit accounts until the bandwidth levels have increased above the SLAs value?

We always try for the highest sync on all ADSL plans, but it does depend on the loop length and quality of the line.
Fax number is 919-490-6901
If you cant consistently get the 70% guaranteed throughput we will adjust your billing accordingly.

| | Speed change if I switch? We currently have ADSL with another company. The lines are BellSouth lines and throughput is consistently tracked at 1.1-1.3. I am seriously considering switching to BritSys.net to get a static IP address and to cut current cost. Since I currently get 1.1-1.3, will my speed remain the same? | |

As long as your circuit is provisioned out of a main central office and not a remote terminal we should be able to get you the 1500/768 ADSL.
You can IM me your full address with phone number and i can tell you the loop length between your office and central office.

| | Chicago BritSYS I am moving to downtown Chicago, how is the BritSys DSL service Cable Buster package down there? Do people gernally get a good connection? How far is the office for downtown? | |
|
| | | Re: Chicago BritSYS I got my service installed Tuesday and it is excellent so far, 1.5/768.
You need to call britsys and find out what speeds and packages you qualify for.
