C.O.F.S. 1, Bellsouth 0

COFS definitely came thru with what they promised. They even scheduled to have my NID replaced, (free of charge) and it happened without me even being home, and its been smooth sailing ever since. GREAT SPEED, really FAST, they gave us the needed static IP addy's for our WebServer, DNS service, email@hotmetalradio.com, everything we needed at the LOWEST price we could find ANYWHERE.

Our particular business DEMANDS CONSTANT FAST connection to the 'net, and thats what we have thus far!!

A very good business class DSL service overall. Oh, and switchover time from BellSouth was SUPER fast, like TWO days!!

I'm just thinking that it may not be quite as easy for other Snappy customers to find this forum as say the old DTV forum or some of the other "big guys" forums. Perhaps Snappy could add a link to here from their website? In the members area or in the support area.

So far things are fine with my connection. It seems my ping times for BF1942 are somewhat hight with SnappyDSL than with DirecTV but I haven't tried it since Tuesday, so maybe that has improved.

Faisal

Well, it appears that my connection is smoothing out nicely. Last night I didn't hit a web page that didn't load within a second or two, much the opposite of the day before where 1 out of every 5 pages gave me a "page not found" error. At some point yesterday, I wrote an email to support at Snappy about my issue, although I prefaced it with a warning about how it may be a little early to scrutinize my connection. Around 9pm the phone rang and it just happened to be Faisal. We spoke for some time about what the problem(s) might be and some remedies, if my connection starts deteriorating again. Just plain excellent customer service!!! Thanks Faisal!!

Snappy is a Great Choice in the Atlanta area

Snappy had me up and going in 10 days. I have a static IP address and the speed is great. I called tech support to have my email activated and my hold time was very short. Wish I had went to Snappy first after being disconnected from DTV. Would have been up and running a lot sooner. Thanks Snappy.

Yes and a few other domains that we picked up as a result of some acquisitions in the past.

However, we officially recommend that you use @snappydsl.net since all of the others will go 'away' with time.

LQ vs tracert produce different results

here's an interesting observation(trivia). it appears that the "host100" we were questioning only shows up in the line quality test from dslr. i have not seen a "host100" in any tracert i've done in a dos box. "host98" shows up in those occasions. also, a tracert to "host100" skips my gateway address while a tracert to "host98" goes thru the gateway address. both "host" addresses take 26-28ms but "host100" has ttl=63 while "host98" has ttl=253.

Game ping times

Anyone here playing online games? What type of ping times are you getting with Snappy? I was getting in the 30's on Directv, now the best I'm getting is in the 60's... with many of the ones I used to get faster getting pings in the 100's.

dtvdsl just charged my cc.

i'm obviously not hooked to dtvdsl anymore, bs knows it, snappy knows it, the dtvdsl news server knows it, but the normal billing date was the 22nd so there it is, $49.99 for the upcoming month of service. the billing dept must be on autopilot. dtvdsl site says they will be shutting down on 1/31/03. funny part of this is the phone number listed next to the billing entry. call that for a laugh, it says we don't want to hear from you, good bye! i told that to the cc service rep, he says that he'd heard that more than once and issued a credit. now its upto dtvdsl to prove i have their service.

Advanced Properties of the Modem

Since we are finally out from under the heavy hand of DTV, has anyone had a chance to look at the Advanced options of our modem yet????

Is it tweakable???

I plan on looking at it sometime this weekend, but was curious if there were any other adventurous souls out there besides me.

Suggestion for FAQs Regarding Snappy DSL

I thought maybe we should see if we can get a FAQs sticky or a permanent link to FAQs for our new board here. Like maybe a Help Desk, or General Setup page or just plain FAQs about SnappyDSL.

So are there any suggestions as to what should be included in the FAQs????

Any thoughts???

(I imagine we will have to get a mod to help us put it in, and we will likely have to petition Justin as well.)

What FAQs? After the modem arrives, wait till the day they promised you service, hook up the modem the way they tell you and surf.

Re: Suggestion for FAQs Regarding Snappy DSL

Hmm.....if you bother to check the DTV forum there were many questions in the Many SnappyDSL threads that could have been averted if there were FAQs. Obviously we were soo new at the time, and it took Lobbying by you and others to get us this far, that no FAQs were available to help any of us.

Also there is no documentation in anything Snappy sent us concerning what is attached to the Modem, and what might happen if you remove it. (If you find said documentation in your paper work, please post a copy of it because mine was lacking.) I am sure there is more stuff that is not documented that a New User would like to know of before their current service dies. Not that the FAQs should try and be all encompassing, but it should contain what a new user should expect.

If SnappyDSL already has this fine....maybe we can get a copy put here or a link directly to it on their site. It makes no difference to me at all. However, since this is our little corner of space on the net why not set our FAQs apart and try to do something unique.:)

That said.....lets get the FAQs started shall we.:)

_____________

-When should I hook up the modem???

Ans.

It depends. If you have received the modem, got an e-mail from SnappyDSL, and it is the day on which your service is scheduled to go live then you can hook the modem up. But don't be surprised if you hook the modem up and try to surf, that you can't. This is because of some last minute updates to Databases and maybe even a few connections being made. If you hook it up in the morning and set everything up according to the E-mail, then hopefully by the time you get home from work you will be able to surf the net.

If not call Tech support and they will get everything fixed up for you.

-What is the device that is connected to the back of my Modem when I pull it out of the box?????

Ans.

That device is an Excelsus Swapper model S-L1/L2, and it helps the modem Sync up for DSL Service. If you remove it your line will not Sync.

-Will I be able see the Statistics Page of the Modem???

Ans.

It depends on whether or not your LAN setup is in the same IP range on the LAN side of the Modem. If it is then yes when you type in 10.0.0.138 you will be greeted by the Welcome Screen of the modem, and you will be able to browse to the statistics page using your browser.

It is not necessary for your network to be setup in the same IP range of the modem unless you soo desire.

-Where should I go to check my E-mail???

Ans.

It seems SnappyDSL has many sources for you to check your e-mail. They would like you to use "mail.snappydsl.net."

______

This is but a few questions I could think of at the moment. I am sure there will be more, please post your questions and/or answers.:)

Re: Suggestion for FAQs Regarding Snappy DSL

FAQ additions:

-How do I get additional e-mail addresses??

Ans.
Fill out and submit the Snappydsl form linked here:
»snappydsl.net/Snappyweb1/Support···mail.asp

-How do I get the Personal Web Space (ftp space) included with my Snappydsl??

Ans.
Personal Web Space is setup upon request. Send an email with your full name and account, to support@snappydsl.net or call tech support.

-Will I be charged for services from my previous ISP after my line is live with Snappydsl??

Ans.
Experience says this is not a yes or no answer. It is best to notify your previous ISP Billing Dept as soon as your line is live with Snappydsl. Technical Depts and Billing Depts are separate and additional charges may accrue because the Billing Dept was not notified.

gt, slight expansion. Most phones use two of the four wires in the RJ-11 plug. The Alcatel modem is set up to use the other two wires for some reason. The swapper is necessary to get the incoming signal to the modem by swapping it from one pair to the other.

Also, it may be necessary to take your router out of the system, set the computer to the correct ip and hook directly to the modem from your computer to get into the modem.

The only mention I could find about the swapper is in chapter 6, page 44 of the manual for the Alcatel.

"ADSL Connector Pinning
Depending whether a Central Splitter or Distributed Filters are applied, the ADSL Line can be terminated on different pins of the ADSL wall socket(s).
Therefore a cross-over adapter might be necessary."

There it is clear as mud.:)
(After reading this again, I guess Alcatel expects all of us to run a whole house splitter and use the second pair as a clean line for our DSL. This way the swapper would not be needed.)

news server limitations??

any one here use the news server?? have you noticed limitations on speed or amount per day?? i was just catching up with a few text based groups since moving from dtvdsl a few days ago. i use free agent and have noticed "stop and go" action downloading new headers and messages. netpersec shows high speed bursts followed by much slower downloads. the activity seems erratic.
