Fioptics HD

Hi all! I have been looking to switch from Directv to something else. Since I have wireless service and zoomtown already I decided to look into Fioptics TV and switching to the internet service also. It seems that I can get the Fioptics internet, but not the TV yet. So this gives me time to research everything, which is a good thing. I have gone over the channel guide a few times and see most if not all my channels are there.
But I do have some questions that I am hoping can be answered.

Is there any time frame till Fioptics will be getting Fox Soccer in HD and what about getting FOx Soccer Plus?

Are HD upgrades to existing channels pretty regular? For instance I see BBC America is still standard def. HD has been available for awhile now. Any plans on that?

Thanks for the time and answers in advance.

Re: Fioptics HD

BBC America will be available in HD on channel 665 from June 25.
Fox Soccer will be available in HD on channel 607 from June 25.
No word on Fox Soccer Plus.

The HD additions above are part of 20 new HD channels in June. Total number of HD channels will then be around 100.

If you are being offered a Fioptics internet service but no TV then I suspect that you would not be getting a real fiber connection. In the past year or so Cincinnati Bell has been deploying Fiber To The Node (FTTN) rather than Fiber To The Home (FTTH). FTTN uses the existing copper pairs for the connection from the node to the home and runs VDSL on that leg.

Re: Fioptics HD

Thanks for the speedy answer!
That clears up my only real concerns. Since Fox out bid Directv for the UEFA Champions League and Europa League there is no real need to stay with them. Plus their pricing is getting to be outrageous!

While I'm here I might as well ask about GolTV. Any word on getting that channel? And I have also heard that Cincinnati Bell is working out a deal to support watchespn.com. Any truth to that?

If Cincinnati Bell is doing that FTTN what does that do for my chances of getting Fioptics TV? I am in Westwood.

Thanks again!

Those are a part of Duke Energy's new "smart grid" they're deploying. They're supposed to read and transmit data from digital "smart" meters installed on customer premises (we just had the new meter installed last week) and relay outage information among other things. Well I went out today in search of fiber optic near me.
Is this what I am looking for?

Re: Fioptics HD

This unit would be used for FTTH - i.e. full Fioptics service. Although copper (telephone / DSL/VDSL) aerial enclosures look similar the easy clue is the row of 12 connector ports on the lower edge. The connectors are used to avoid aerial fiber splicing when hooking ap a new subscriber.

Pls Help! 1080 switched to 720 resolution; now no picture

We just got the fioptic installed today but the screen resolution was not great; it was stretching the image and the menus were expanded so we could not read the top, bottom, left, and right of the menu. I played around with 1080i vs. 1080 standard and there was little difference. I set it to 720p and now my TV won't recognize a signal at all. How can I get the DVR to reset so it recognizes it should be 1080 when I can't even see a signal on my TV? After that, how do I adjust the resolution so the aspect ratios are correct for programs and menus?

Zoomtown throttling now?

In May 2011 cbt installed a remote dslam down the street and my signal levels and speed have been GREAT.

Yesterday (6/6/12) around 2:30 I sort of lost connectivity. "Sort of" because even though the modem was still synced at the full 5mb, with still great signal levels etc, I was getting NO traffic through it. Then about 3:00 it started working again. It did this a number of times for varying periods. At NO point did I loose sync or incur errors. (I run the westel modem utility continuously on my 'network server' box logging statistics, so I KNOW it didn't loose sync or take signal hits.)

Things have settled down now but I've noticed a significant change in the behavior of my line. When I kick off a download (say the 3GB Windows 8 preview iso), instead of the line saturating at around ~4500kbps, I'm seeing this range-bound behavior where I get a minimum of ~2Mbs (which can go for varying periods) with spikes / ramps / segments at the line max.

Now that sort of sounds 'normal' (ie network congestion sometimes slowing down the transfer) but please believe me, the graphs (Task Manager Network tab) I'm looking at are NOT normal. For example, if it was congestion, I would NOT see a rate 'plateau' at ~2Mbs. What I am seeing looks like some sort of bandwidth management algo, where I'm being guaranteed a 2Mbs MIN xfer, with higher rate bursts as 'something' decides there is available bandwidth.

So... Has anyone else seen anything like this recently? Try a big download and watch the Task Manager Network tab. Does your line saturate, or are you seeing a lower plateau with spikes to the line max?

BTW, I've had four conversations with zt support so far; in the most recent one the rep said basically, 'you are getting between 768k and 5M, there is no problem'.

PS - It isn't just HTTP downloads being affected; newsgroup binaries, torrents, even Netflix and YouTube streams are being throttled.

Re: Zoomtown throttling now?

There is no intentional throttling as far as I know. I'd look into equipment malfunction (probably on the other side of the bridged connection). There is a CBT representative that posts on here that you may want to try and contact. Here's a post example with the contact info: »Re: Cincinnati Bell FIOPTICS - intermittent tv/internet drops

What speeds does speedtest.zoomtown.com show?

anomynous

@fuse.net
Thanks for the contact pointer; I may pursue that avenue.

Speeds shown by the zoomtown speedtest range (they used to be VERY consistent) between 2000k to 4400k depending on what 'the system' decides to give me. Attached is a quick snap I just took; the first segment is a speed test (gave 2900k), the second one is me starting a download of the win8 iso.

FWIW, I swapped out the modem (westel 6100) this morning. The new 6100 has updated firmware (so none of my links to the previous version's hidden pages work anymore). Also, the "Westel Modem Browser" monitoring utility doesn't seem to be able to find the modem now (is there a newer version?)

The new firmware shows:
Model Number G90-610060-20
Serial Number
MAC Address
Software Version VER:5.01.00.05
Software Model ProLine Modem
Description ProLine
Boot Loader Ver:01:00:06
Configuration 096-900251-00A

(I blanked the serial / mac above)

Last night about 4AM data throughput went to zero again (modem was synced fine). I poked at it for a while this morning (made some 'interesting' observations which I'll post later) and decided to swap it out just to make sure. As you can see in the
attachment, I'm back to the throttled behaviour again.

Oh, and here are the current levels.
   Transceiver Revision : 3.3.2.2.0.1
   Vendor ID Code : 4D54
   Line Mode : ADSL_2plus
   Data Path INTERLEAVED

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
   DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 5052 764
   Margin (dB) 24.8 19.6
   Line Attenuation (dB) 9.8 5.1
   Transmit Power (dBm) 18.3 9.9

Downstream margin is lower (used to be 31db) and upstream is higher (used to be 13db). Transmit power is a bit higher, too.

This is very frustrating :(

PS - I wanted to put the pic at the bottom; how??

The previous snap was at 12:20; this one was at 14:20.
Same sequence - speedtest (~2800k) then win8 iso dl.

In the first snap I was obviously being strongly throttled to ~2Mb. This one has opened throttle up some, including a segment at max line speed (~4500k).

And roughly two hours later (16:10), I started yet another copy of the win8 iso (no initial speedtest this time). You can clearly see the throttle fully kick back in. (Note: Task Mgr running at Low update rate to compress horizontal scale).

I really hope some other ZT users, in particular those in copper-based 'Fioptics' areas (with remote dslams) will try similar tests and report back. (FYI - I'm on Mack Rd in Fairfield)

Re: Zoomtown throttling now?

Comparing with copper based VDSL2 Fioptics customers probably won't help because on those connections the internet access component is throttled. e.g. the line may be synced at 50 Mbps down but the internet connection is throttled to 10/20/30 Mbps down while the IPTV traffic can use the line speed.

Don't ya wish 'congestion' was always this well behaved?

Monday morning I finally got past the Philippine script readers to a senior support rep, who within 2 minutes also concluded there was a problem (gasp) and elevated it to 'engineering'. Called back this morning, and they've concluded they need to roll a truck, which will be here Wed. AM (almost a full week from initial incident).

This 'change in behaviour' I'm experiencing has at least two aspects.

1) There are times when the line is basically useless. I mentioned earlier about some interesting observations; well the most significant is that the 'no throuphput' events are frequently extremely slow throughput events. For example if I ping my modem's default gateway and specify a huge timeout, I will often actually receive the echo. I've gone as high as 60 second timeouts and seen some replies hit 59.9 sec. I've also tried & seen cases where file xfers or speedtests report sub-dialup speeds. But note that my dsl signal levels stay excellent and dsl error rates are practically non-existant. I've been focusing on this aspect lately as it seems easier for 'them' to understand.

2) The other aspect is the 2Mbs throttling (like above). Over the days since this started I'm also beginning to see time-of-day related aspects to this. (more on this later).

You may notice I'm posting this via TWC/RR. Saturday I signed up for a 3Mb/$20 special, which has made testing much easier (as well as providing some sorely needed connectivity, sigh).

@fuse.net

Re: Zoomtown throttling now?

Well, that was interesting...

CBT repairman arrived, examined and tested line etc. He found one phone that was not presenting as high of an on-hook impedance as it should have (not a full blown short, but out-of-spec). Other than that, line, signal, etc was damn near perfect (31db margin, 24+Mb capable) and unplugging that one iffy phone made NO difference.

The guy was obviously a 'telephone repairman' and not a networking type (for example, at one point I had to explain 'packet'), so I had to walk him through the problems. Luckily my line was pretty much operating in mode 1 (above) while he was here, so it was easy to show that despite excellent DSL connection, internet access was impaired. He called some of his support folk; none of them had any suggestions on how to tackle it. ("To a carpenter everything looks like a nail").

We talked about the possibility that the problem was at or past the dslam. Only thing he could think to do, which is what he ended up doing, was to rewire my entire line from the CO switch on, connecting me to new ports at both the CO and remote dslam. We also swapped modems again (got an E90 now, so Westel utility works again, yeah!)

End result - everything seems to be working again. However, no one at this point has any REAL idea what / where the problem was. For that matter, I'm not convinced it was even the physical port moves that fixed it vs the software reconfiguration of nearly all aspects of my circuit.

Anyway, given my observation above about very long ping times, out of curiosity I ran a ping scan on the /16 subnet I was in, looking for other instances. Obviously an imperfect approach, I nonetheless actually found a few other customers whose lines APPEAR to be experiencing the same issue mine had. Of course I can't run speed tests through their modems remotely, but the ping behavior looks similar. For those curious, here are a few: 74.215.131.162, .170.47, .237.51, .238.190. Just make sure to set the ping timeout high, say a minute or so (ie PING -t -l 0 -w 60000 74.215.x.y). Let it run for a while and observe times (and don't assume a series of timeouts means modem is off - let it run a while).

And in response to my original question: I still don't know whether cbt is throttling or not. 'Mode 2' above sure looks like it (graphs), and even 'Mode 1' could be considered an extreme case of throttling. However it seems more likely there is some sort of obscure failure / misconfig going on. I feel sorry for other folk in the same boat, given the battle I had to wage to get my line fixed...

Well at least yours is working again.....

I tried trace route to some of those IPs from Level 3 in Cincinnati. One odd thing is that the path was: Level 3 Cincinnati, Level 3 Atlanta, Level 3 Washington, TiNet Cincinnati, Fuse Cincinnati. Odd because pinging speedtest.zoomtown.com from the same location takes a single hop......

The pings certainly showed as a lot slower than "normal" Zoomtown circuits on the final hops!

Re: Zoomtown throttling now?

It makes absolutely zero sense for them to intentionally "throttle" the comparatively low-end connections. What makes more sense are the numerous issues that plague an aging copper network and CBT doesn't care enough or have enough resources to sort them all out (at least in a timely manner). DSL connection speeds dialing down on their own are due to error from malfunctioning/poorly-maintained equipment or any number of line quality issues along the loop (which may not be apparent with end-user diagnostics).

I had a number of speed and connection issues back when I had DSL. All were due to either equipment problems or line quality.

Re: Zoomtown throttling now?

Guess I should wrap this up...

Second repairman arrived Monday. Ran tests, measured a ground on line. Ran a TDR which pointed to a spot about 200ft from residence. Further investigation located problem between 'my' pedestal and the 'next' one (all underground wiring). He checked some other pairs, didn't find any other problems, so decided to move me onto a new pair (which I believe meant some rewiring at the remote dslam).

At this point (unless I misunderstood) the only part of my loop that has NOT been rerouted is the final 50ft segment from pedastal to sni. As I am original homeowner (pushing 30 years here) I guess at least PART of my recent issues WERE due to "numerous issues that plague an aging copper network".

I'm thinking that I may have been throttled or held back in some way. My wife and I have both noticed that our Internet connection has gotten slower over the past couple of years, but it was fast enough to get by, so we did nothing about it. Recently, we experienced pretty frequent lags and drops and speeds about half of what they were a year ago and thought it might be our router. A new router was purchased and installed, but the speed was consistently around 1.3 Mbs. Just this morning I talked to a customer service rep at Cincinnati Bell and asked him what speed we should be getting at our location. I also mentioned to him that we had scheduled an installation of an Insight cable Internet connection to "try them out."

The customer service rep told me that he would try to "optimize" our connection. He told me to turn off the modem for a couple of minutes. When I turned the modem back on and re-established a connection to the Internet, my speed (as measure by both speedtest.zoomtown.com and speedtest.net) had jumped to 4.5 Mbs! I asked him what he had done to "optimize" the connection and he said that he could see our line could handle a higher speed, so he simply set the speed to a higher setting. He said they need to "observe" the connection for 24 hours to see if it is stable.

Just thought someone out there might like to know what a phone call can sometimes do to help your connection speed.

Fioptics ZyXEL bridge mode help

Hi I just recently switched from Time Warner Cable to Fioptics and I really like the speed, but they gave me a modem/router hybrid device VSG1432-B101 from ZyXEL. I already have a high end Dlink router I already have customized that id like to keep using.

The problem is since it runs through two NATs now I cannot correctly host video games and such through DMZ or port forwarding. Its a shame to finally have tolerable upload speed of 5mbps and not be able to host a giant 10 player RTS game you know?

»img.techpowerup.org/120625/router.jpg
I believe there is the key to setting this router in bridge mode and I have already had near successful attempts by setting the ethernet one in bridge mode, but another problem shows up.

They put my HD TV service that my whole household runs on through this same modem/router. My Dlink uses one ethernet, while the TV uses the second port that runs to a device that converts to coaxial. When I bridged the ethernet, the Dlink router got the IP properly, but only 1 TV worked for a time, then none.

Do you guys know how to setup this bridge properly? Or do I have to ask the setup guys for a option that doesnt make the TV run through the router?

Re: Fioptics ZyXEL bridge mode help

Only the VDSL interface is relevant - you could even disable the other 2 on a VDSL installation.

The problem is that the TV service uses multicast so if you use your own router it has to support multicast proxy which your DLink unit may not do.

PM me if you really want to pursue this - it can be done but is obviously not supported by CB.

Re: Fioptics ZyXEL bridge mode help

You could delete them but it won't make any real difference. The one which needs to be in bridge mode is the VDSL interface.

However, unless you can support multicast (e.g. IGMP proxy) on your router you can't put the modem in bridge mode.

The ZyXel itself can do port forwarding - maybe a cheaper solution than getting a multicast capable router which are typically in the $75-$100 area.

FiOptics Review and Disappointments- From an IT Professional

Had FiOptics installed yesterday under the guise of beautiful picture on the televisions (which is true), an all digital streaming solution (also true) and uber-fast, low-latency internet....which is a swing and a miss.

Issues "punch" list so far:

DVR does not work. Never did. Can't pause, rewind, playback, or record anything on either tuner. Calls to support have all been handled in the Philipines, and exercises in futility. Their ACD supposedly called my AT&T iphone (with full signal and no connection issues) today on my scheduled appointment and got no answers. Basically - I've got nothing working right, and they don't care.

Tuner GUI is abysmal; very slow, very non-intuitive.

Channel selection is so-so, but most of the HD basics are covered.

-----

We're here for the net though, right?

I purchased (what I was told) is 20mb down, 5mb up. I believe this is actually 20/2 - but I'm holding them to it.

My install was done with all new cat5, no coax. I have a cat5 run to one tuner, and a split cat-5 run to the other DVR and my personal Cisco E1000. We have no home phone, nothing else is on the copper. ORM is less than 200 yds from my demarc. Zyxel DSL modem/wifi is inches from demarc. All cables are home-runs, except for the non Hard Drive tuner, as dude measured the cable about 20 feet too short and snipped an RJ45 jack and RJ45 socket on two cables to build a connector. I'm sure there's some DB loss there, but he would hear nothing of it.

Wired speedtest: 30ms latency, 16mb down, 1.6mb up.
Wireless (using the Zyxel only) speed test, 4mb down, 1.8mb up.
Devices: iphone4s, ipad3, MacBook Pro i5 N, Dell Latitude E i7 N. Consistently AWFUL wireless.

Wireless (using my Cisco) 8MB down 1.5 MB upload.

Reconnected to my Insight 20MB cable.

Insight - Religiously on wireless or wired - 22-24MB download, 1.1 - 1.3 mb upload.

---

Price difference: FiOptics is about $45 a month cheaper than Insight equal package, and should offer double or better upload speed.

---

Conclusion: Cin Bell support sucks. It's pathetic they've shipped it all off shore.

Cin Bell techs not available after 4PM on Saturday or on Sunday at all.

DVR/Tuners Suck.

Zyxel wireless device, even when limited to 20mhz or 40mhz only and locked down to N wireless only - sucks.

-----

Would be curious if anyone has Zyxel access point info they'd share on the proper config for ideal throughput and latency, and any familiarity with these POS tuner boxes and how to vary on the DVR functionality of the units.

For the price separation, I'll give them a chance; at least if after I talk to Insight Monday, they elect not to drop my bill by $30 or more per month and up my I/O. I'd pay more for the Insight stability AND US based support.

Re: FiOptics ZTE router gaming issue!

The ZyXel VDSL modem can certainly be used in bridge mode and I suspect that a ZTE versuon can too - but if you have the TV service your router would have to support multicast which is used for the TV service.

Perhaps looking for a DMZ option on the ZTE modem and seeing if you can use your existing router as the DMZ device might be easier.

Fioptics nerf upload speeds?

Hi folks:

I'm still not in an area that's served by Fioptics yet, but am eagerly awaiting them doing something in my area. However, I thought originally that the upload and download speeds were advertised as being the same, but now I see that it's like ADSL and the upload speed is seriously less. Is this a recent change or am I hallucinating about them originally advertising a symmetrical connection? What I'm really interesting is getting a much higher upload speed as 768K just stinks if you are trying to upload.

So as Fioptics uses IPTV technology, one can get the streams on PC if the PC is on the same network. I have searched all over the net but am still unable to make it work. I have used softwares such as DVBlink for IPTV and VLC player but had no luck.

Anyone successfully got this working? Any ideas?

FIOS and cable cards

I signed up for FIOS a couple weeks ago after having had Time Warner. I have set up my own media center using Windows Media Center and a Ceton Infinitv that worked great with TW. It has now been 2 weeks and I still don't have a working setup with my cable card on CBT, and am convinced that no one working there knows how they work.

So it started when they first came to do my install. The guy shows up and he doesn't have a cable card. He says he was out (I was later told that they do not keep them on their trucks at all) and when he went to the main office, they told him they were out as well. So he installed everything and set me up with a standard HD box so I could at least watch something. I immediately called support about getting a cable card. The person I talked to told me she couldn't find me in the system, probably because my setup was so new, so she would call me back the next afternoon to confirm about the cable card. Of course, the next day I didn't get a call, so I called them back. I talked to someone who said that I would have to schedule an appointment to have someone come out and install the card. When I inquired about self install (as I had done with TW) I was told that wasn't possible and someone would have to come out and install it. Of course an appointment wasn't available until a week later.

So the guy comes to "install" my cable card. He knows nothing about them, but that shouldn't be an issue, since all it is is plugging it in and then calling in the information. I can tell the people at the central office don't have much cable card experience as well, since they are discussing whether they need to enter the cablecard id, the host id, or the MAC address. He talks to quite a few different people, but it keeps giving the error that it hasn't received the validation signal. Eventually he gives up and leaves, since he can't get a hold of the people he needs to and tells me he has left messages and someone should contact me to troubleshoot.

Of course, no call back the next day so I call tech support. The guy I talk to doesn't even try to troubleshoot the issue. He didn't even ask me for the information to verify they had the IDs right. He comes back after putting me on hold for 5 minutes and insists that they have to schedule a tech to come out. I tell him that unless he is going to replace the cable card (which isn't a bad idea), there is absolutely nothing for him to do on this end, but he just keeps insisting that he needs to send a tech, and of course no one can come out for 5 days. He was probably the least helpful tech support person I have ever talked to. The poor tech comes and of course there is nothing for him to do except call the main office and have them trouble shoot. At one point, someone from the office talks to me and tries to tell me that the issue is that they switched their signal from MPEG2 to MPEG 4. When I tell him the error is clearly the validation signal and it isn't even getting to the point to receive the signal to decode it, he tries to tell me that sometime it gives "weird errors". After about 2 hours the head end finals tells him it is the cable card. He doesn't have one (since they don't keep them on the truck), so he is going to grab one and come back first thing in the morning. He comes back with 2 cards the next day. The first card also doesn't work but the second card finally does get the validation signal (after waiting for it to update the firmware). So once it gets the validation signal, it now doesn't have the CP Auth (which the old card that didn't get the validation did get). So I can receive all the regular channels, but I can't get the music channels or HBO (for some reason, ShowTime does come through though). The tech gave me his number so I could call him when I got home from work if it still wasn't working, since again, he couldn't get a hold of the people he needed in the main office. I came home to the same thing, gave him a call and he called the office. Throughout the night my card rebooted 4 or 5 times, showing they were trying something, but it still doesn't have the CP Auth, so I cam going to try again tomorrow.

It has been 2 weeks since it has been installed and it doesn't doesn't fully work right. No one at CBT support will talk to me, it all has to go through a tech which does nothing but waste their time (especially since I know more cable cards than they do). Their cable card support is the worst I have ever seen. Of the people I talked to, most didn't even know you could use a cable card with Windows Media Center (multiple people actually told me they had never even heard of that). They are about 1 day away from me just cancelling and going back to Time Warner. As bad as TW was, they could at least get a cable card to work, which CBT can't do at all.

My advice, if you are going to do anything with a cable card, stay as far away from CBT FIOS as you can.

Cincinnati Bell Fioptics

Well I just jumped off board of Time Warners Roadrunner and got this new Fioptics and am having problems with things I used with the Dynamic IP service Roadrunner had. Can anybody tell me of a work around for the following....I have a Linksys/Cisco E4200 (which by the way will do MAC cloning if I knew it was sucessful in cloning CB's ZTE Residential Gateway router) and before the switch I was sucessful at accessing my E4200 router thru port 8080 via the dyndns.org service. I understand Fioptics is not dishing out a real world IP and their RG issues out a 192.168.200.1 address for my E4200 to link up with. Also all my port forwarding settings must be changed in the E4200 to allow access to my in house DLink network cameras..another dead link..UUGGHH..anybody have any success at seing the inside of their network after getting Fioptics? I even tried to check the "enable Remote Access" box in the ZTE residental gateway finding I need a admin password.

Re: Cincinnati Bell Fioptics

I just had this same problem. Here's a link to the posting that helped me get my Linksys router working properly with my Cinci Bell Westell 7500 set to Bridge-to-Bridge mode:

»[modem/router] 7500 won't stay in Bridge mode

Skip down to the entry from Bytebender that starts with "That's what it sounded like to me too". It's the "tip" in that posting that fixed my problem.

The normal setup for the scenario you mention is that your Cisco router would plug into the RG. The RG would provide a private 192.168.200.x address to your router. Your epuipment would then continue to function as it normally would. You could even configure a static private 192.168.200.x (2-19 are reserved on the RG) IP address to your Cisco router from the RG.

I would suggest a static Real World IP address from CBT's network to your equipment. CBT offers a single static IP or 5 static IPs. CBT can configure the RG to use the static route through the RG assigning the Real World IP to your router in your network. This maintains the managability of the device as well as allowing your router to have a static Real World IP address.

Check the comments in this post. It refers to the ZyXel residential gateway byt some comments may also be applicable to the ZTE gateway.

Questions about Cincinnati Bell FTTN Fioptics Service

I wanted to know what are the limitations of Cincinnati Bells Fiber to the node are. I would need two HD DVR's and three HD Boxs and wanted to know if Fiber to the node could handle it or am I better of staying with satellite TV. Cincinnati Bell just installed fiber to the node in the Village of Fairfax October 9 at 8:30 in the morning. My zoomtown modem is now maxed out.

Refurb ZTE TV Boxes on New Installs!

I am putting this out there as a reference for everyone. Had FiOptics installed last week. Immediately upon the tech leaving, I started having TV issues. I had to Tweet Cincinnati Bell, Work my way through the phones in the Philippines and back to Cincinnati, and then go through two more people here, because the first person was clueless, and call my salesman to avoid having to wait a week to get my TV working correctly from an install the day before! That's pathetic for customer service! I had crap TV service for the first 14 hours after my install. Here is the important part. If the installer shows up with a DVR or Receiver out of the box, it is probably a refurb. The bigger problem here is some of the ZTE boxes take a 750mA Power Adapter, while some of them take a 2A Power Adapter. If your ZTE is locking up, crashing, and giving blank screens, this could be your issue. My installer was a contractor, and not a CB employee, and he and another contractor were able to figure it out. This is exactly why CB should not be sending out unboxed refurb equipment into the field for new installs! Take the time to review the equipment correctly, or don't do it at all! My personal preference is don't give me someone else's garbage, and don't complain when I want new stuff. Crap in, equals crap out!

Fioptics Speeds all over the place

Is Fioptics a shared service with the neighborhood or what? One day I get 30 down 10 up then the next I get 4 down and 10 up. It's all over the place. Anyone else have this problem? I have only had it two days (Delhi, OH), but I thought I would get what I was paying for as far as speed.

thanks

FiOptics ZTE Router/Modem...

Does anyone here know how to set this router/modem into bridge mode so I can use it as strictly a modem and then use my currently owned router as my router? The setup on this ZTE is pretty terrible and not straight forward what-so-ever.

If anyone knows how then please let me know.

Thanks.

Fioptics Fiber to the node question

I had a Cincinnati Bell salesman knocking on my door 11/17/2012 which was a Saturday letting me know that Fioptics was available in my area. I told him I did not want to make the switch yet I would have to think about it and do some research about their service. He left me with his business card and said he would call back Monday. I wanted to know is FTTN a good service or is it prone to problems. How is it different from fiber to the home. I see mixed opinions on the internet. I would at least use four tunners at one two on the DVR one in the bedroom and another in the family room constantly. I would have a total of five TVs

Re: Fioptics Fiber to the node question

Reading the forum you can probably get some feel for what people like / don't like. Channel selection is good and improving. Set top box software has been poor but is getting better. Offshore customer service nobody likes....

In a way it depends what you are comparing to. e.g. Fioptics FTTN is less affected by weather than DirecTV (slight interference rather than total signal loss).

I have looked over the forums and I decided to try the service. I went ahead and called the sales person using his business card and signed up for TV, Internet, and Home Phone.

I choose the Fioptics Max Package and I got one whole house DVR and four HD Boxes. I also got the 30MB Internet package and also got the Home phone with unlimited long distance. They scheduled the install for Monday November 26 2012.

Re: Fioptics Fiber to the node question

The 2 places I've seen it installed, they run a new line to the house. Some day they will bring it down my street.
Today I see they lowered my zoomtownMax 10Mb down to zoomtown and gave me 5Mb without sending me anything. Still paying xtra for it

They installed everything. The HD Picture quality is way better than Time Warner Cable. I would put it on par with Satellite's HD Picture quality if not a little better. Internet is fast and low ping times around 35ms.

Closed captioning delay.

I just had Fioptics installed and am running into a big problem. My wife's hearing is tracking downward and we use the CC a lot. Problem is I'm getting a delay on the CC text that goes anywhere from 5 seconds to a streamed movie that was running with a delay of minute or more. Defective box??? Connection problem???

I have the 20 mps download speed. Speed tests appear to be as promised.

Re: Closed captioning delay.

It would be useful to know which set top box you are using and which channels you are seeing the effect on - that way others can perhaps check if they are seeing the same issue.

Fioptics-Month Two

I'm on my second month and overall I'm very happy. I had a CC delay that was solved by 1. Reboot on Setbox 2. Reboot on cable modem 3. reboot on the set box again. All of this was necessary in that order.

I'm only left with two problems (if you don't count the lack of HD on Demand for HBO or Cspan 3 not available).

Problem 1: When I turn on my equipment everything comes on fine, but then it seems to go into some "rest-time" mode where the very basic keys: Volume, Channel Change, Guide do not react. Within about 3 minutes they again become enabled and everything is fine.

Problem 2: When playing shows on the DVR if I fast forward anywhere passed about the 75% finished mark, it dives immediately to the end of the recording. The resume doesn't work. I am forced to start at the beginning and FF my way all the way through to where I was. (I have a repair order on this which they said they could probably fix without coming to my house. We'll see).

The desktop box is Cisco equipment B703V3A.

Whoops, one other gripe: no way to set up a fixed "turn on" channel that you would prefer it enter when you first start up equipment.
