| Anon | I'm happy...so far
I've had Zoomtown for about two months now and I'm very satisfied. Istallation was a breeze and I had my connection up and running within about an hour on the day promised. The speed is not blazing but it cranks compared to my dialup. My only issues have been with the wiring in my house (I already new that it was messy). Cable might be faster but I have less faith in Time-Warner than CBT.

| | $pecial $etup Fee$
Cinci Bell often runs specials on Zoomtown [3-4 times per year I understand], usually with your option of: 1) No setup fee or 2) 2 months free service. I highly recommend waiting until they run the special before getting set up.

| | Random Disconnects
Wondering if anyone has had similar problems, and a solution if so.... Every couple hours my modem will disconnect and the ready light will blink 1-3 mins and have to reconnect. I am using a Westell Wirespeed Modem (Model #: B90-211010-04). I called tech support and they it had to be on my side cause the line test showed no problem and I show that I am connecting fine. I have tried with 3 different computers, same result each time, Cincinnati Bell refuses to help since it is my problem. Retraining the modem doesnt help, I have unplugged the phones in the house, tried with USB and Ethernet, etc etc, all with the same results.
Any info would be appreciated.

| Re: Random Disconnects How long have you been on the service? I was having this problem right when I got hooked up (a while back) and it ended up being some old, unneeded telephone line testers in my junction box. The tech came out and cut them off, and since them my disconnects have been few and far between.

| | Anybody have 1536/768 Anybody have the hyper speed package? I have had it for about 2 months now and my upload has fallen off a bit. I talked to CBT and they said it was because they were redesigning my particular CO. My modem (Celpipe) is training at 1536/576 instead of 1536/768. | |
|
| | | Re: Anybody have 1536/768
I have that package and I notice, when testing, that the modem upload speed drops every so often to close to 300 kbps. Then I have to unplug and re-plug the dsl modem to get it to retrain at the higher speed. I'm wondering, since the speed and get lower, why can't the modem (Lucent) or a different modem, that will auto-retrain to the higher speed.
But I also have another problem. I have two lines run into my house. Each line is a twisted pair. On the second twisted pair I have a voice and a dsl signal. Everytime I get a phone call or even make a phone call the modem loses connection and the WAN light flashes for about 30 secs.
They come Monday to try and figure this out. I think either a bad dsl modem or possibly they will need a full dsl/pots splitter on my line, or worse interference/crosstalk from the other phone line.
|
| | | | Re: Anybody have 1536/768 Because I did the Self-install I missed something. The phone company use to use a MTU (maintenance testing unit) for line testing and this was causing all my connection problems when I received or dialed my phone. Talking to the tech who came out to remove the MTU, he told me that the unit almost always causes problems.
so MTU + DSL = bad | |
|
| yockTFTCPremium join:2000-11-21 Miamisburg, OH kudos:3 | I had these testing units on my line as well. They were causing disconnects whenever someone picked up the phone. It also can't hurt to run the site connection tweaks. It won't fix ping times, unless you're experiencing packet loss due to packets dropped on your end. This may be a problem if you were previously configured for Dial-Up internet service. -- BBr SetiBBr Folding BBr Gaming Clans Big In Iowa | |

| | Cisco 675 Problems
I have a Cisco 675 and I've had Zoomtown for at least a year now. In the past 2 weeks, Zoomtown started randomly disconnecting about once daily. The modem shows no signs of disconnecting and they said its on my computer's end. They suggested I remove my networking card drivers and reinstall them. When I did this, I hosed Winsock and fixing that required regedit, so Zoomtown tech wouldn't help me and I had to call Microsoft the next day. Now they tell me that my networking card is bad and I need to buy a new one, granted they aren't expensive. Has anyone else had a problem with Zoomtown dying like this? Microsoft suggested that the problem was Mcafee firewall because it interacts with Winsock directly, which they weren't supposed to do.
|
| yockTFTCPremium join:2000-11-21 Miamisburg, OH kudos:3 | Re: Cisco 675 Problems I haven't been experiencing any connectivity problems lately. Is the Cisco modem itself losing connection (green WAN link light going from solid to blinking) or is the modem staying trained and your computer is losing connection? Awesome! Can't wait for the upgrade. Should easily get over 300k/sec since I already reach close to the max transfer rate on our 768Kbps connection (which means line conditions are good and I'm relatively close to the CO). | |

quote: What are we doing to increase your speed?
We are upgrading our entire Network to make your ZoomTown service even faster. All the work is being performed by our Network team so there's nothing for you to do. You will receive an email notification from us 48 hours before your service upgrade. On your scheduled date, we'll make the necessary changes to the network during the night and you'll wake up to an even faster ZoomTown connection the very next morning.
When will my speed increase take affect?
Over the next few weeks we will be upgrading our network for everyone. We anticipate completing the entire upgrade by the end of the 2nd week of March. We will send you an email approximately 48 hours before your scheduled date and let you know when your service will be upgraded. There's nothing for you to do, nothing to download, nothing to install. Just enjoy the increased speed!
Will this speed increase cost more?
Absolutely Not! We're increasing your speed, but not the price. The regular price for ZoomTown remains $41.95 and the discount package prices will also remain unchanged - including our new You Add, We Subtract bundles that include ZoomTown. In fact, if you add additional Cincinnati Bell products and Services, your ZoomTown Bill each month may even cost less than it does now.
I have ZoomTown's 1.5Mpbs HyperSpeed, how will my service and price be affected?
This speed increase affects HyperSpeed customers as well. We are doubling your speed from 1.5Mbps to up to 3Mbps. Even better news - your price for your ZoomTown service is going to be lowered to $41.95 per month! Talk about a great deal - faster speed and lower price! In fact, if you take advantage of our new You Add, We Subtract bundles that include ZoomTown and purchase additional Cincinnati Bell products and Services, your ZoomTown Bill each month may even cost less than it does now!
Will I have to download anything or install any new software?
No. We are doing all the work on the network side. Your speed increase will take place overnight on your scheduled date. There's nothing for you to do, nothing to install, nothing to download. You'll wake up the next morning and your ZoomTown service will be faster than ever before.

| DeathKPremium join:2002-06-16 Cincinnati, OH | Got off the phone with tech support again (called twice). This time I was able to get somewhat useful answers. The first guy mentioned that a problem with the higher speed could be arising since I don't have filters on each individual phone. What I have set up is one filter on the incoming phone line. The line is then split up into all the lines for around the house. Hasn't caused any problems with the 768 connection speed. The guy credited five filters to the account and I can pick them at the nearest Cincinnati Bell store (about a mile away).
However, I don't think that could be the issue. I disconnected all but one phone in the house and hooked up a filter to the one phone. I called tech support again and explained all of this and to get the guy to try the higher speed again. He tried, but it still didn't want to train at the highest speed. I was watching my Cisco Commander on my puter here while he was doing it and I saw a few different number combinations: 952 up (again)/400 something down, 1028 down/600 something up, etc. He said if it's not the phones here cuasing the issue then it may just be my distance from the CO is too far (which I highly doubt since I live right next to a large business district). He's sending the problem to the repair guys to have them run a line test. If they run into an actual problem they'll call, but if they don't I can call back in the evening to get the results, ie. if I'm too far from the CO.
This is getting tiring. I just want mah speed Anyone else using the Commander software.. what's your line quality under Link say? Mine's 28db.

DeathKPremium join:2002-06-16 Cincinnati, OH | This is getting out of hand I'm sure a number of you remember the issues I've gone through with my connection and Cincinnati Bell (look at the Zoomtown upgrade topic if you don't).
Well, it's been a few months since the connection increase and my speed has been getting progressively worse over this time. It's like they could care less about the maintaining of their equipment on their end, or the line quality has gone to hell and back. It was bad enough I couldn't even pull 1.5Mbps download speeds after the "upgrade", but now I'm pulling speeds nearing the old speed (ie. less than 800kbps). Speed tests reveal speeds less than 100k/sec, actual download speeds are in the low 100's or less. This is absolutely pathetic.
I know if I call tech support up and bitch them out about this that the problem's not going to really get solved. They may do something on their end, but then it's just going to get worse again. I really hope they haven't resorted to secretly throttling download speeds.
As much as I dislike cable I really wouldn't mind switching over to it at this point in time. At least I'd get decent download speeds (with the business package from Road Runner at my work I've seen download speeds of over 300k/sec.. average is around 250k/sec). However, my dad detests the cable company for some reason and will not ever get it again (we had cable TV a long time ago).
I'm really getting tired of this
|
| | | Re: This is getting out of hand cable isn't bad at all, in cincinnati there r 3 diff cable services that offer 3mbits download for $45 a month normal price. theres adelphia, roadrunner, and theres earthlink. i think u should try to convince your dad to switch somehow, couse cable has a much faster download speed than what u have now my friend gets 2.9 mbits download speed with roadrunner while i am getting about 2.6 with zoomtown. cable has serious advantages over dsl, with cable u can live over 30 or 50 miles away from your co and still get near capped speeds. but with dsl if u live more than 13 or 15k feet from the co or have crappy lines your speeds maybe much slower than the caps. | |
|
| | DeathKPremium join:2002-06-16 Cincinnati, OH | Re: This is getting out of hand Speeds are almost back to normal now. Haven't tried any real outside downloads yet.
Earlier today I saw a CBT guy down at the junction box at the end of the block. He might have been doing some maintenance, I'm not completely sure. Anyway, I'm a bit happier now and I hope it stays like this instead of going downhill again.

I used to have SpeedStream 5667 modem and never had problem with this modem, but during electrical storm fried my previous modem.. I called and request a new modem, but I still'd have to pay 2nd new modem for 99.00 which is no big deal.. that time I didn't know which kind modem was it, since I didn't care to ask. Next day I received the package, I saw the label on the box says WESTELL, and once I opened the package.. I never thought this modem was so such filmsy and all outer plastic, once I plug everything in and I keep hearing creaking noise every time I move around.. that make me think this is so really cheap modem compare to my previous modem... I kinda like it at first becuz it has 10/100.. my old modem only has 10/NA, but anyway I just now notice that modem keep disconnect every once a while, and reconnect at longer time. Than my previous modem.. it doesnt disconnect, and it does reconnect immediamately. I had really terrible latency, pings, connection at this time. At other end and couldn't even ping me at all.. During that time I request for speed increase.. from 384/384 - 1536/768. Once it has been processed the order.. speed increase went on effect immediamately. So I ran off speed test site.. and came back the result to me and shows 651/171.. I did everything I could, no luck so same for at other end..they check curcuit and everything.. nothing has work every well.. I just gave up and next day I went to bestbuy store.. and bought new bridge ATM modem which is SpeedStream 5100, and I set up everything.. all of sudden Im getting excellent latency, pings.., 100% stays online and I re run speed test and result shows 1508/756.. Im all satsify with my another new modem..
Thats pretty obivously WESTELL is the one causing such BS and waste my time to figure what the heck wrong with it..
Btw I'm not Verizon Online DSL customer, I notice VOL customer have WESTELL modem.. and I don't have PPPoE.. thank god!

Are you guys throttling certain ports? I know when I use Bit Torrent to download my game patches I have to use the transparent proxy that you guys have us on, and I even open ports on my router to allow traffic through. It seems though that I still have issues with the speed on certain trackers. I know I have everything setup correctly on my end and I'm sure the tracker im going to is ok because one of my friends runs it. Any info you can give me yes or no I would appreciate. Thanks.

| | | | Re: ZT tech support I know of no ports that are throttled by us, however a few are blocked.
23,445,5000,37737 and 31137 to name a few.
What is your isp? I'm assuming you are using fuse. However you can also use one.net (previously nuvox). I know they don't block 445, and the leet ports, plus a static ip from them is $14.95 last I checked. If you had a static ip then you would bypass the whole DSLAM to VRF to NRP crap that causes VPN issues. (Not that it is crap put NAT (network address translation) can cause problems with a few things, VPN to name one and the NAT might be what is causing your issue with certain trackers.

| | | | | Re: ZT tech support I found my problem. I had a old version of the torrent client I was using. Fuse kicks ass out here, i've got no problems with them. I do have to specify the transparent proxy's IP in the torrent client before the torrent will take off and fly but that's not too bad of an issue. You don't know why the transparent proxy's IP changes like every 2 or 3 days do you? Not a gripe, just curious. Thanks for you reply man. I appreciate it sir. | |

| | Can't access zoomtown mail from out of town! I have been trying every way I can think of to log on to the zoomtown home page from Ky so that I can check my e-mail. I have not been successful. If there indeed is a way to access from out of town, it needs to be more obvious. I will be changing to a more user-friendly mail service when I get home. What am I paying for? | |

| | adsl2+ info? I read with interest the info about possible Zoomtown upgrades in the coming months. I've been thinking about dumping roadrunner because of the anemic 384kb upload.
Unfortunately, Cinergy's BoP offering is not currently available to anyone with underground wiring, as per their response to my query.
Zoomtown's 768kb upload looks attractive; assuming I place an order, what can I do to insure I maximize my upload speed (even if it means trading off againt download speed)?
I already plan to use a 'whole house' splitter just after my SNI to minimize house wiring impact. Should I request a particular modem? Would I be better off with a CAP based modem (cisco), or one of the DMT based modems? And which modem(s) will support the upcoming upgrades?
As I understand it, the number of subbands used for up vs down is fixed with DMT modems, and DMT modems have higher latency due to the complex DSP algorithms?? Conversly, the DMT modems always operate in bridge mode, whereas the cisco's include built-in NAT/PAT support??
FYI, my current intention is to get a static IP; does this decision have any ramifications for modem choice or speed?
Thanks | |

| | Any Suggestions? 588/594 »/speedtests/60···04808110
Well that's my speedtest and it has been like this for a few months now. I e-mailed technical support and they told me that my line looked ok.
It really bothers me that I'm getting these speed when my package is 3Mbps/768Kbps. I'm happy with upload. It usually is around 600~.
I don't want to switch to cable and there isn't any other options that I have unless BPL comes through (in terms of cost).
