| 1mb by 128k ROcks in the STICKS! Well,
My experience with frontier was great. We called on Monday, I got my modem on Thursday. I couldn't believe service was available in Ggranville Summit PA ! (this is the BOONIES folks) The speedstream 5667 USB/enet is NICE - I use both ports simultaneuosly to feed two machines that are not networked. The whole shebang took about 10 minutes to install not including the extra phone line I ran for it (no , you don't need that). I average 100-140k downloading and 20-24k uploading. Absolutely no complaints for $39.95 a month!
Only complaints: The modem firmware is not accessible, I would have liked to reconfigure the router feature that is built in. BUT..... Who cares! just buy a cheapo Router/Hub (Staples - $80.00) - sell the old hub on ebay!
Best parts: DHCP makes it easy...no proprietary BS connection, no login / no anything. It's there and just on. Should work perfect under ANY OS. (I use Linux, Mac OS 9 and Windows) Customer service was very friendly, and NO BULLSHT rebate deals or wierdo plans. Just pay XXX for X months till the equipment is covered, then it drops down $5.00 (your results may vary)
;0) ~~Happy Customer~~ ;0)

Currently I live in Minnesota, south of the cities, in a mid rural area, and the only broadband option is Frontier DSL, which is 60$ a month, and speeds are 800/128 roughly 100K down and a very meager 12K upstream. It sucks being that I have no other options, IE cable where I could be paying up to 20$ a month less and have more less just as good of speeds, most of all a huge upstream bandwidth increase...I mean, I don't think it would kill Frontier if they increased the upstream bandwidth for DSL customers, I bet less then a quarter of the people even need more then 128, but for those who do it makes a lot of difference, specially for 60$ a month!

| Need help making server Visible to internet I have a 3Com 812 ADSL Router. This is what I started with. Now, in addition I have a 3Com Wireless Cable/DSL Gateway. Connected to the gateway are 3 wired computers and two wireless computers. One of the wired computers is a Server running Win2K Server Pro. I want to make this visible to the internet again.(This was visible until I connected the gateway.) In the 812 I have the NAT TCP set to the IP address for the server 192.168.1.230 issued by the gateway DHCP Server. In the gateway I have the firewall configuration set so this server is the DMZ Virtual Server and all unresolved requests will to routed to this unit. I thought!!! Can you tell me where I seem to be going wrong? I have checked and rechecked and have not been successful. If I put the server back on the 812 and assign an IP address it is visible from the internet but not from the LAN. On the gateway it is visible from the LAN and not the internet. Is the problem that I can't have it both ways or is the above configuration messed up. I'm confused. Any help will be greatly appreciated. | |

| Not happy here, FrontierNet Well, I have been very unsatisfied with FrontierNet.
First problem: when I called, I asked if it was 1.5M X 128K, and they confirmed ("Yes"). Well, the hardware tops at 1M X 128K. Not that huge an issue, but this was a foreshadowing of what was to come...
Well, I've had their DSL installed for about a month and my speeds (download) range anywhere from 13K to 800K. It has been very unreliable. And I'm paying $50/mo for this. I've been unable to connect on multiple occasions, which is VERY annoying since I do computer work, and when I need to get online and get files for a service, I don't like to put it off until my ISP fixes whatever problem they seem to have so frequently. And then when they do get back online, I'm lucky to average 30K on the downloads.
Well, so I've been lied to and underprovided to. They took my money and term agreement, and expect little be given in return.
In comparison, I recently moved here (Jerseyville, IL) from High Ridge, MO. In Missouri I had SBC (now merged with Yahoo) for my DSL ISP. They were fantastic. 140K-220K downloads, 15-20K uploads. All for $35/mo at the end (started at $50/mo when it first became available, and did I jump on it). And their customer service was fantastic, with the few little issues I had, mostly inquiries about doing this or that.

| Re: Not happy here, FrontierNet Here is a communication to which they did not reply. Also, the benchmarks: I find it ODD that my sub 300 benchmarks do not show up on the public charts. WHY??? _________________________________________ Now you tell me that 384K is my subscribed speed? I did not sign up for 384K. 1024K would be acceptable, but when I asked if I would be getting one and a half megabits per second download speeds I was told "Yes". And you tell me that 384K is acceptable?! I have found the customer service your company provides to be completely inadequate. I called to cancel my service, as I have had speeds as low as 30K on your DSL service. I was told that the previous mentioning of being able to cancel if "not satisfied" without any worries was not on record and in fact could not have happened. So I was then told I would be charged $50 for a week of unreliable and majorly underpowered DSL since I was terminating my agreement for one year of service (which I would like to state again was TOLD TO BE 1.5Mbps, not 30-500K). So not only was I lied to, but then I was treated as the liar because of one of your own employees misleeding me into getting your services. And now you tell me to upgrade my service! Why on earth would I pay you more money when you can't even provide me the speeds I was told I would be getting at this "standard" level? If you would like to see some of my benchmarks, they're under zipcode 62052. There you can see my excellent dialup speeds via your DSL. No other applications or network connections where present during these tests. And these speeds happen fairly frequently, giving me the dialup experience in my web browsing.
I would not suggest anyone do business with your company. You have blatantly lied about the speeds you would provide me with, as well as lied about my ability to cancel if not satisfied. In my book, this makes your company fraudulent. Go back to school and take some business ethics classes.
Unsatisfied,
Jon Silveus

I was told up to 1.5mpbs, and I noticed in my modem configuration menus that is only goes up to 1 mbps for it's max download speed. But even that would be better than what I'm getting. I can't even get it to 400Kbps, benching on your own benchmarks with my score around 350Kbps. This is horrible and not acceptable for $50/month.

In Rhinebeck New York Frontier DSL definately has the speeds they advertize, we have 2722/320 kbps dsl and it works well at that speed..... but that's only when we're connected. The servers in the area must be old or overloaded because we have frequent disconnects and considerable packet loss and high pings. For several months I was running the ping test here at dslreports.com and it was asking me if I was still in the US. because pings were over 1000. They recently fixed the pings but now we're facing large amounts of packet loss. I've ran tests and gotten 10% loss on the local servers.

| FrontierNet connection drops... just reboot Got the Frontiernet DSL installed. Very fast for our area (farm country) - but only when it works. After an hour or so the connection will drop. I called their support desk and was told that the IP lease will expire and the connection will drop... WHAT?! The woman on the phone didn't know that their lease is 18 hours - not 1 or 2. Why would they tell me the connection will drop - isn't DSL an always on connection??? Then she told me I need to reboot my PC when that happens. Just reboot - then all will be fine... Doing a trace route when it works shows that our area goes up to Rodchester. Saw a few posts from others in that area who have the same problem... maybe it could be more than just having me reboot?!! | |

| Frontier DSL is worse than dialup! I consider myself a very understanding and very patient person. I'm also someone who is a network engineer by trade so I am very familiar with the workings of a network, internet service and so forth. But the past 6 months of dealing with Frontier's service have literally pushed me over the edge.
At first in Oct 2001 everything started out fine. DSL was flying, I was able to get around 100k/sec which eventually seemed to get capped around 50k/sec. No biggie, speed tests continued to show me anywhere from 400-600 on a regular basis. Things seemed to get a tiny bit slower which I took appearantly as more customers signing on for DSL.
Then come January 2003. Speeds went from 50k down to 20k. Then from 20k down to 10k/sec. Of course this happened between january and march, but since March speeds have NOT increase. It was during the March time period that all customers were promised a 1MB upgrade so I had hoped to at least see 800+ on the speedtests, but unfortunately speeds actually slowed. As of right now my speed tests rarely get higher than 150/150.
Anyway since March I have been dealing with several high up people at frontier including an engineer and a lady who I have dealt with before and have nothing but positive words for her. Unfortunately due to whatever reason help has NOT been quick at coming. In August I discovered that our small rural area had been fed by a single T1 line to supply service for upto 60 DSL USERS! Talk about over provisioning. Frontier fixed that with a DS3 loop and afterwards I was able to get some rare speeds upto 40k/sec, but 15k/sec is the average.
What is worse that has been since the last week of August I have experienced such instable and unreliable connections, that I have given up DSL and am typing this on dialup! Disconnections are happening roughtly 10-15 times per hour with it taking upto 5 minutes to reconnect. While I have typed this on dialup, DSL has disconnected twice, twice interupting software I'm downloading to update a customers computer (I run a PC repair service).
I am to the point where I am ready to loose my cool and just blow up. I have lost literally a weeks worth of work due to this and when I have called frontier asking for help or a discount of price till it's fixed... I'm told "Sorry we don't guarantee speeds." I've had the DSL modem replaced, the NID box on the side of the house has been replaced, and the lines on the pole near our house have been checked out. I really don't know what to do.
I can't continue to pay $50 for service I'm not getting or is not getting fixed. I can't continue to flush money down the toliet like this when I'm also loosing out on work because I'm unable to do PC repair work or webpage design as well.
Does anyone have any ideas... any help?!

| Frontier is blocking all ICMP ECHOs (pings)
Frontier has decided to stop ICMP ECHO (pings) to any site. It returns a "destination unreachable" message to all pings. This , I assume, is in reaction to the latest round of denial of service attacks.
Unfortunately the AT&T VPN client fails to connect because of this.
They say they have to upgrade their routers but it has been weeks and no fix. I am going to ask for at least a one month refund.

I have asked a few friends with frontier, they are experiencing the same problems. Today they showed up with a new modem, telling me that this will fix my problems. No such luck. I am still experiencing up to 70% packet loss.. and being the online gamer that I am, i cannot afford to loose 70% of my packets! I am also experiencing upload speeds at less than 40 kbps. | Re: SOCOM online It's your Router. You Can't play ATV offroad Fury don't even try it..
I've got socom to work.
If you want FULL gamesupport your going to need a NEW router.
ZyXel 652r is the best hardware I've read about. The 645r will work with frontiers PPPoA I'm using it now. Complain to them that theitr rouiter SUCKs.. There is also a 3com modem that will work with alot of LINKSYS routers and DEAL with the PPPoA to Eathernet conversion, but those have been discontinued.
The SS 5200 has ICMP packet problems where it's automaticly set to DUMP Pings, for most internet that is useful for other services like GAMEs it's problematic.
By default (any firewal) the SS 5200 stealths all ports not set to your computer..
Also Note Frontier is on PPPoA most places and LynkSys routers as well as tuns nearly everything out thare doen't work with PPPoA. The Frontier modems/routers can't be set to bridgemode because of this. So your stuff with ....
1. buying a NEW 645r or 652, or Sticking with the 5200 and DEALING with it..
You could complain to LinkSys and ask them to support PPPoA, if you could get them to support a firmware that works with PPPoA "DIRECTLY" then you might have the ability to host well..
The 645r (not the best) is $165-$220, the 652 is $250-$300 My suggestion is to complain like I did that they charge twice as much as other DSL providers and have half as much COMPATIBILITY.
552r has more options and included LOOPBACK, so you can connect to your WAN IP.

Why, the only thing the active-x does is make the logo glimmer. It's not critical that the logo shines like it's moving. a Simple GIF logo would suffice.

The best ping I've EVER see to ANY server is about 70 ms, which is a terrible compared to Road Runner or any other decent ISP. During peak hours, the best I'll see is about 150 ms to any server. Absolutely terrible. When I check my trace routes, I see my ping to the first hop is well over 100 ms, which is TERRIBLE!. I shouldn't be over 20 ms to the first hop. They keep blaming me for the problem. Testing my lines, giving me new modems. But its their network, its trash. | You know, I finally got my web server up today and it is running on port 80 just fine so I am not sure if they really block it or not. I am sure if you bug them enough they will do just about anything you want, or so it seems to me.
I love how every time I call them and tell them I am getting 2.5 mbits download they tell me I am crazy and it is impossible yet its always there.
I was very impressed today by their service in getting my my new firmware, the guy even asked if I needed help setting it up, best experience I have had with them to date.

| Change Telnet Password?
Well after updating that firmware I started playing around some more and found the telnet server in the modem. Does anyone know the default password for Frontiernet's modems? I have tried the telmex password I have found here but it didn't work. Is it possible to change the default password? I just don't want anyone to be able to telnet in and goof around because it had a default password.
Thanks
