Just wanted to post something here in hopes we can get a Mesa Networks Thread started.
I just got service from then and am very happy so far. I got the residential plus package: 1m down, 500k up. I'm getting about 33ms of latency but it's better than the Qwest/MSN service I just gave up. -- »stan4d.net

| question about the monthly caps Hey, we (two computer geeks) are thinking about getting the mesa residential "plus" package, but I've never measured our usage before ...
We have several machines and occasionally download CD images and such. We certainly surf the web a lot, and there's a lot of gaming going on, too (stuff like EQ, planetside, counterstrike ...)
Could any hard-core computer users speak to the adequacy of 10GB/month? Is it enough?

| Response to Limits Since I can't respond back to another older post, I'll post info here. The 10GB data limit is more a formality than a ridig guideline. I run servers, etc, and I use several GB (8 or so). So, it all depends. And... overage is very cheap! -- My Website | |

| Mesa to increase residential speeds in 2004 Mesa is preparing to do something very cool in 2004.
They are currently testing out a speed increase to residential customers. I know that it will affect the residential plus account. The speed should go from 1M down / 500K up to 1.5M down and 500K up. At this time it appears to be a free speed bump but official details haven't been released.
Look for more information from Mesa in January. -- My Website

| Re: Mesa to increase residential speeds in 2004 Here is the official notice:
Dear Mesa Networks Customer,
Over the past couple months, we have been busy making improvements to our service offerings to provide a better value to our customers.
First, we recently upgraded the download speed of our residential service plans. These changes are currently in place.
The $58 per month service is now up to 1,500 Kbps download by 500 Kbps upload.* Previously, it was up to 1,000 Kbps down and 500 Kbps up.
The $44 per month serivce is now up to 1,000 Kbps download by 250 Kbps upload.* Previously, it was up to 500 Kbps down and 250 Kbps up.
Second, we are in the process of migrating to a new e-mail/web server. The new server will add new features such as spam filtering, a much better webmail application, and will be easier to use. As a result of this migration, we will also be slightly modifying our email and web site packages for the better. This migration will be completed in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more details coming soon.
The Staff at Mesa Networks

So, I thought I'd start a list of known routers that work with Mesa's service.
/28 + /29 Capable + NAT/DHCP •All Linksys Routers
NAT/DHCP Only •All D-Link routers •Motoral VT1005 ATA + Router
Incompatable by themselves / Require router above to work •Cisco ATA186 - Requires NAT+DHCP Router •Switches and Hubs
Rumored to work but untested • Buffalo routers - supposedly /28, /29 compatable • Netgear - NAT/DHCP

| AT&T Net Client/Dialer/MTS Ports
For those of you using the AT&T Net Client (and there are many of you), here are the ports that need to be open on your firewall in order to allow you to use Mesa Networks' service.
•TCP 21 •TCP 50 •TCP 80 •TCP 389 •UDP 500 •TCP 709 •TCP 5080
Typically (almost 99% of the time), the problem lies with UDP port 500. If you get stuck in "negotiating keys" then this is the problem. There is a program which will allow you to change UDP ports. I'll try to post it here when I get to my work computer. -- My Website

It might be close. The Mesa folks are reporting this loveland coverage area which, if I recall correctly, is the othe side of the street from HP. You might give Keith at Mesa a call and see. The Loveland tower went up because enough people asked for it.

| hello from Broomfield Hello all, I'm a new Mesa Networks user via VillNet.com (builder Village Homes). I'm pretty happy with the performance now, but the antennae had to be installed a second time (moved to the other side of the house) due to occasional (but very annoying) connection drop-outs. On the plus side it didn't take long for them to diagnose the original problem and offer to come out to fix it.
Interesting that residential basic is 1000k down now. I thought I was getting 500k down but after the second install, I noticed speeds upward of 900k. I guess I should start expecting that to continue, eh?

| Is Mesa really worth it? I have a bunch of friends with Comcast's cable and they never have reliability issues. Comcast kills Mesa on downloads, consistant 315k/s is what my neighbor usually gets as opposed to my 175k/s with the 1500/500 package.
Is it really worth the $58? I'm very close to pulling the plug and going for the faster, cheaper internet...
Thoughts? | |

| Mesa in S Fort Collins I've had service in Fort Collins (Fossil Court East - just west of College and a block or so south of Harmony) for a couple months now. I've got the 1000/250 service - which includes a static IP for just $44/month.
I haven't had any problems. When the installer came, he noted the house was in a bit of a valley and wasn't 100% sure we could get service - plus we were the furthest away from the main antenna that he'd installed, although he did say he was new at the job.
Anyway, with an extra $50 install charge, we got a dish (just like a sat TV dish) instead of the regular antenna and he got us setup just fine. Speed tests indicate we're getting the full published bandwidth.
I intend to upgrade to the 1500/500 service soon, and get a /29 subnet (5 public IPs) because I have my own web/email server that's currently co-located in a previous employer's server room! I need to move that to my house, and the Mesa service definitely seems up to the task.
All in all, this is a very good service. Yes, the bandwidth for the price is a little less than Comcast (and possibly DSL?) but Mesa has a clue, and services like static IP and /29 subnets definitely make up for it.
BTW, the FAQ says the bandwidth limits are fairly flexible - they won't just charge you a ton of cash when you go over if you're pretty close. Their tech support say this too. I'm pretty sure I went a little over last month, since I downloaded a .tar file of the whole disk on my server (about 5G usage) plus a 4-CD set of Fedora Core Linux, plus regular Internet usage, plus some other smaller incremental backups and testing. I didn't hear anything from Mesa about this.

| Problems with Tech Support at Mesanetworks This doesn't have anything to do with connectivity issues, which are usually way above average. It's a tech support issue. I have an email account with several addresses at mesanetworks, and they use some kind of spam filter at their data center that grinds my emails to a halt every couple months or so. My email slows to a trickle, and in the process I usually miss dozens of important emails from customers, clients, family, and friends. These are all confirmed missing emails, as I will get phonecalls from irritated people demanding to know why I haven't answered their emails. I can't use their webmail, because it doesn't even make it that far. This time I have recruited several friends around the world test my email by sending me a certain # per day. Most never arrive. This time around I have spent literally 3 WEEKS writing Mesanetworks every single day about my email problem, and they still have done absolutely nothing about it except an occasional email saying something like "we have a ticket into the data center, we'll update you when we hear from them". How is it an email problem can take nearly a month to fix? They know it's their spam filter. I'm not a tech, but I can't understand why they can't they do something in a day or two, max. Fed up, I finally signed up for an email account elsewhere and access my mail via the web. Unfortunately, most of my business-related stuff has my mesanetworks address printed on it. The tech support is way below sub-par at Mesanetworks, in my opinion. | |
