How long does it take DLS.net to contact you?

On the website you sign for a signal test to make sure your home is eligible for service. But how long does it take for them to do it? Also, how do you even know they got your information? They don't send an email, when you call they say there is no way to check when you will be tested.

Anyone know how to verify they even received your request?

Re: How long does it take DLS.net to contact you?

I've been up and running with DLS for about 3 weeks now, and the service has been up with consistently high speeds every time I've used it. Ping times are excellent as well. It took them a few weeks to come out to do the pretest. They told me that they are quite busy now processing these types of requests. I would continue to follow up with them to ensure they will process your request. I used to have IDSL...the DLS experience has been far better than what it took for me to get IDSL. (3 attempts with 3 different ISPs)

Re: How long does it take DLS.net to contact you?

Thanks for the response, I finally had my pretest done. It took about 3 weeks. I am good to go and am getting the service next week. I have another question.
When you say consistently high speeds, what are they? Also, what ping times do you average? I am pretty excited at this point. Also, I read that sometimes cordless phones interfere with the signal, have you noticed this?

Re: How long does it take DLS.net to contact you?

Speed rates have varied from 350K to 690K

I'm not so sure about ping times, but they're less than 100ms. I believe they're 60-80ms for the game server I use.

I have not noticed the cordless phone interference. I'll have to check that out.

Re: How long does it take DLS.net to contact you?

I just had my wireless connection installed a few days ago. It did take them about 3 weeks to do the pretest, and they were booked for about 2 weeks doing installs at that point. Now I get connection speeds between 260 and 700 kbps, with 350 being the norm. Even if it isn't the maximum of 1 mbps, it's still better than my previous dialup speed of 24 kbps, and that was on a good day. The ping times are phenomenal. I usually get 60-80 ms pings on most game servers.

Over all, I'd give DLS' service a 9 out of 10. The installers definitely knew what they were doing, and did everything they could to make it go as smoothly as possible and answer any questions I had. The only complaints I have are the slow response time for their pretest and installation, which is understandable, but they could have sent e-mail updates, and the first bill I received was not itemized and caught me off guard when it included both the installation and first month of service. All in all, the wait is most certainly worth it.

Bubba

Ahhh At last some posts on DLS. I signed up for prequalification two weeks ago, and since I didn't know any better, I emailed customer service last week asking how my qualification went. They responded by emailing me back saying I did not qualify, and that they left a voice mail for me. However I never got a message from them. (I just wonder if I got confused with some one else.)

Funny thing is... according to my wife, the DLS van was in front of my house yesterday. Which would seem to be on par with a 2-3 week wait for the pre-qual. I'll just wait and see if I get a call soon.

Re: Bubba

I send in a request for a coverage test over 3 months ago, and they never even called. I live in south elgin. I would think if they want to keep customers (there are 3 wireless providers in the area now), they would need to up their response time. I didn't bother follow up with them, just figured they did not want my money. Guess I will give it to someone else.

I just send in a coverage request yesterday (9/15) for foxvalley.net, and the were out today (9/16). So far so good.

DLS so far

I signed up for the pretest as well and the van was parked in my driveway less than a week later. They could not get me installed until the 13th of August, which is when they will start doubling up on the installs and should be able to hit more customers per day. I spoke to the people that came by to do the pretest and they said I had a very strong signal. I can't wait!! I will post again and report on download speed and pings and the overall installation process.

DLS.net, It's Great

I have been live on DLS for about 3 months now. I had a few problems in the first few weeks with slow connections but I have had no problems as of late. I fact, the called me once to tell me there was a problem with the connection speed and gave me 2 free months of service for the trouble!! I wasn't even online at the time!! I'm in the Southwind sub-division in Huntley. I use a router and share the connection between 2 computers in the house, they say they don't care as long as you don't share with people outside your house via wireless 802.11 access points.

Re: DLS.net, It's Great

I've had their wireless service for about a week and a half now and they just called me today. They're coming out next week to re-aim my dish because according to their scans, I'm running a little slow. I don't think 350-400kbps on average is slow, but I'm not complaining. The only problem I've had so far was yesterday when it dropped to around 30 kbps, but it was back up to 300 in about 20 minutes with no interruption in service.

DLS questions

Can any of you verify whether DLS works with VPNs? I telecommute and therefore need to connect with work through a tunnel. I currently use Speakeasy with IDSL which works well, but this would be much faster and cheaper (and it sounds like the latency would be about the same). Also, I've heard that weather does not affect the connection. Can anybody confirm that?

Thanks a lot.

Re: DLS questions

It does say in one of their disclaimers that weather nay affect it, but I have yet to have an outage due to weather. As for VPN, they said they don't block any ports, but they don't like people running servers. My SmoothWall router is capable of VPN, but I haven't tried it.

Re: DLS questions

Thanks for the info. I decided to send them an email and ask specifically. I don't need the VPN for running a server, I need it to tunnel into the office for work, so I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

BTW, I don't suppose you've had it long enough to comment on whether or not it is affected by snow?

Thanks,

Re: DLS questions

About a week and a half ago, we had a torrential downpour for about 10 minutes which didn't seem to affect it. Come to think of it, I've only had one incident where it bogged down below the 256 kbps minimum and that was on a sunny day strangely enough, but it was back up to normal in about 20 minutes.

i will have dls installed in my house in a week. the and the only concern is that i use kazaa and edonkey do get mp3, music video, game demos and movies sometimes. when i meen somtime, its probobly twice or 3 times a week, and i used to leave the computer on all night. do any of you know if there will be any problems with that. will DLS get mad or cut off the service. i will be paying $65 a month and i want to use it to the max.

Re: DLS use

They haven't said anything about my Kazaa habits yet, but it's a good idea to only do it at night (i.e. between 10 pm and 8 am), and disable file uploading and supernode capability (that really pisses off ISPs having that enabled).

Hi, I work for DLS and have been reading this thread for a while. I will provide some answers to questions that are posted here every once in a while and supply DLS's point of view.

Since I am speaking on behalf of DLS here I just wanted to caution you against using these applications excessively because DLS will lock you at 256 rate (minimum speed guarantee) if those services are used excessively. With respect to using 1Mb "to the max": 1Mb does not cost $65 - DLS does not get bulk bandwidth even close to this rate. If it had to reserve 1Mb for every user - this service would simply not exist.

They have a policy against running servers and Kazaa/Bearshare and all the other P2P file sharing programs, and I'm sure you understand why, with only 2 T1's to the w-pop and say more then 50 users per w-pop, you can do the math and figure out that 3Mbs/50 does not = 256k each, which is the minimum you should get. Typically its not a problem having 400 people share that much bandwidth (we do it at my work in a corporate environment) do to the fact that not everyone will be using it at the same time and the very nature of the web (connect-get page-disconnect). But if everyone ran a server and each let 10 people grab MP3s from them... If you were the one person NOT doing this and your speeds dropped to below dial-up you'd be pissed. I use Kazaa, but like the other guy, I don't share and I don't "super-node". In the end, if you don't degrade other peoples connections to the point where they call up and complain, in other words don't draw attention to yourself, you should be fine.

DLS.NET

I have been a dls.net user for about a month and a half. I wanted to post after a little usage. There has not been a bit of problem with the install of service since I have been online with DLS. I get over 1mb up and down. It is extremely quick. I moved 6 miles and was unable to get DSL or cable here. I was a bit worried about spending 350 and 65 a month. The installer was great, and tweaked out the system so I could get the best signal possible. I am completly satisfied and would recommend this service to anyone, and I am extremely hard to please. Good work dls.net

DLS.NET and VPN

I live in Algonquin and have been using IDSL from Covad out of a CO in East Dundee. My primary reason for waiting to get DLS.net service was that our company's internal IT department does not support wireless service (including DLS.net) because they are convinced that the latency and download bursts will cause Nortel's VPN connection to terminate.

After speaking to several DLS.NET technical support people they gave me the confidence to give it a shot and I am having great success so far using VPN over this service. The IDSL line speed made it tough to debug and/or troubleshoot software applications. Microsoft's Visual Source Safe was so bad that I made sure I turned of any VSS integration in any of my programming applications but with DLS.net its no longer necessary!

At this point I can highly recommend DLS.NET. The order to time to install was just over a week, the installer was very professional and did clean work inside. The setup with my Linksys router for my home network was painless, and I am getting around 700 kps up and down from the speed test here using MegaPath.

I also have plans for this large antenna I have on my house. I am going to encase it in a rectangular box and make it look like I own two fire places! O.K. I kidding with this - I could really care less about the outdoor antenna on my house.

Anyway, I am very happy with this service and that I am able to use VPN with it. After a month or so I plan to cancel Covad and send my results on to our internal IT support with my findings that DLS.NET is an option and much cheaper than Covad/IDSL.

Re: DLS.NET

I get ping times that average anywhere from 50-80 and thats with 1MB service, which is awesome for gaming. 10MB service is underway, and I wonder if pings will get even better.
10MB!!!! Isn't that about 3 times as fast as cable? Oh and cable........
Now boys and girls, we can all FORGET about getting cable modem within the next few years. Comcast has purchased AT+T cable and have suspended all internet expansion in our area.

NOW here is the good news, at least for LITH residents. DLS.NET is offering 10MB service!!! And it still costs the same!!! The only bad part for existing customers is you have to repay a 250.00 installation fee, which SUCKS, plain and simple.

Also, the sales lady, Cindy, has not been reliable at all. You have to call about 10 times to finally get your date setup.
I know they are expanding and are busy, but not calling someone back is inexcusable (sorry, my pet peeve). Cindy is actually a very nice lady, but she needs more help, I hope DLS.net sees this and gets her some

Tech support still rocks, Starvo and company run that ship, don't ever let them forget it. They rock.

I should be getting 10MB soon (If I can ever get a straight answer from sales) and I have a feeling I will never even want cable. 10MB service is definetly worth 65.00 a month.

Gaming is awesome, UT2002, Ultima Online, Warcraft 3, Dark Age of Camelot all fly with DLS. like I said before, the ping times are great. I am not sure how that xbox thing works, if you can connect it to your home network I think you can use it. I always thought that just worked with a modem.

I am getting 10MB service on December 5th, needless to say I can't friggin wait.

My question is: Is it as fast as cable? And what steady speeds can I expect? What about pings? Under current service in LITH I get about 50-70 or so. Will it be even better? Will my "pipe" be wider at all times?

Does DLS user PPPoE? I really have heard a lot of bad things about it and would prefer a provider that does not use PPPoE.

Also, I see they are planning on expanding coverage to Gurnee and Grayslake. Any ETA on that arrival?

Yes, DLS does use PPPoE and there's nothing wrong with that. Actually it's the standard for broadband subscriber authentication. Most DSL, cablemodem and fixed wireless providers use it and any decent router will support it.

Re: DLS.NET

There's nothing wrong with PPPoE. Sure, there's a little bandwidth overhead, but whatever. It serves the ISP more than it does the customer, because it makes it easier for them to manage their clients, especially with dynamic IPs.

Also, I was just reading their 'wireless fair usage' thing. Fixed wireless is shared bandwidth, just like cable is. So they don't want everybody running big servers or watching fullscreen res streaming video 24/7. It would appear that they have the ability to cap your bandwidth, but if everyone plays nice, everyone gets excellent speed.

Basically, if you want to be a client, residential service is fine. If you want to be a server, you should be paying for commercial service. However -- with dls.net wireless, they have some limitations even to commercial servers.

No Resp. on Pretest requests

I have asked for a pretest twice now and have not had any response. First request was back in August and the second request was in October. I see that a DLS rep reads this thread every once in awhile, please contact me at sid2jynx@hotmail.com. I am right on the current border of your service in McHenry IL, and would like to know if I can get your service as we just had another Wireless provider pop up and will go with them if I can not get any response from DLS. I was in the same boat. Never heard anything from them, so instead I just placed an order for the service. They are coming out next week for the install.(Although I am not very optimistic it will work in my neighborhood) In fact, I noticed on the website there is no longer a link to ask for a pre-test. Good Luck, hope you can get it. My friend just got it installed and said it is awesome.

According to an e-mail sent out to all their customers, they are no longer doing pretests. Instead, to speed things along, they are doing the pretest at the same time as the install. They're trying to keep up with the demand for their service. In fact they doubled the number of installs per day a couple of months ago. I had to call them twice just to get a tennative pretest date back in July. I live on the north side of Johnsburg, on the northern fringe of their service area. It ended up taking them over 2 weeks to do the pretest and another 2 weeks to get an install appointment. Just be patient. It's definitely worth it.

Well the DLS reps definately read this message board. They responded to me last night asking what my address was. I reponded with my address and was promptly replied to, stating that they did do a pretest and that I am out of range . Just got DLS

I just got DLS installed yesterday. The install was perfect. The installer was on time and had it installed and working in an hour and a half. Compare that to my experience with satellite where the installer was over 2 weeks late and it took over 4 hours to install.

Below are the speeds I am currently getting. These are more the 4 time faster than Sat. Average latency is 53ms compared to the Sat. service I had at 900ms.

Re: Download cap on Platinium Service?

I too read about it in the reviews but didn't see clear specification on it online. I occasionally download many megabytes at a time, and I do see my download speed drop slowly after an inordinatley huge amount of activity on my part, but the speed picks back up again after I stop and wait a while.

I've never measured it, I take it for granted that my speed is being throttled back (it's shared bandwidth, after all).

If you are considering the service, don't let this one thing bother you. I'm as pleased as can be with the throughput, reliability, and customer support as can be, and I'm a network support guy at my company, and so can be quite critical if need be.:D

Re: Download cap on Platinium Service?

Same here. If there is a download cap, it is not on their website. Maybe buried in the TOS contract? I took a stab and signed up for the Platinum service this week. I live in Gilberts (Timber Trails off Big Timber Rd) and I'm 1.5 miles from the tower off route 72. I'm getting just under 3 megabit up and down. But I started a 650 MB download last night around 9 PM and it didn't finish until about 10:30 or 11 PM. Seem to slow down around the 100-200 MB mark. I'll have do more tests and see when they throttle you back, unless someone can clearly point out what the throttle back point is in a large download.

Re: actual speed

Timber Trails is north of Big Timber, west of Tyrell Rd, south of 90 and 72.

I'm a few miles (2-3) from the tower according the map that the install tech was looking at on his laptop when they did the install a few months back.

There are other DLS.net wireless users on this board and one of them lives on the east side of Carpentersville. He is within site of the tower and gets 7-8 megabit up/down.

As you can see the speed depends on how close you are to a tower and if you are in line of sight.

Remember too that DLS.net only guarantees 256kbps up and down. That is a far cry from the max of 10/10 megabit up/down. But, compared to the alternatives out there right now, what else is going to give you (in my case) ~2 megabit up/down for $65/month? Not DSL or cable. It's just not available. Not now at least, in our subdivision.

Was wondering if anyone on broadbandreports.com knows of any apartment complexes that have/allow dls.net... specifically, looking for something in the 10/10 area. I pretty much work from home, and have drooled over DLS.net for about 4 years (if not more). Anyway, I thought this might be a handy thing for folks to know...

And to DLS.net: Get in gear! There's a whole metropolitan area you aren't covering! And we all want it!

Thanks!
-Andy

Potential new customer

We are in the process of purchasing a house. DSL is to far so I will be saying good bye to my SBC DSL:(

DLS might be a option. I did call there are no non-line of sight towers. I am within range of 3-4 towers. I west off 59 and north of belvidere/w rand road.

Wondering if anyone has coverage in that area and what package are you on? Also how is the latency to yahoo.com for instance?

Lake Villa Tower Users

Anyone served off the Lake Villa tower (45 and Grand) having speed issues lately?

Please post your tests? I'm in Round Lake Heights and have been seeing a 90% decrease in speeds (from 6000kbps on average to less than 300kbps, mostly in the mid 100's)

Let me know....

DLS is working the problem - but wanted to get other users tests...

On the DLS wireless, how is the connection made dynamic or PPPoE?

Wireless speed less but prices are up?

Tonight I just checked DLS's web site for what they offer for Home wireless. And the top tier offering is their Platinum which is 6 megs down and up for $59.95

The last time I checked their web site they had a 10 megs down and up for $55.00 per month?

So are the speed offerings going down and prices are going up?
