I need some CableOne help.

A few days back my account was shut off for DMCA violation. (I did a stupid thing, downloaded a TV show, apologized, waited patiently, and my connection was reactivated.)

Yesterday I decided to pull down the Fedora Core2 Test2 DVD image (finals are almost over, so now I can play with my Linux box again.) Any time I start up BitTorrent it runs for about 10 minutes and then both of the computers connected to my cable modem simply drop offline. Power cycling the cable modem fixes the problem. I've tried this 3 times over the last 2 days and it does the same thing every time. I finally gave up on BT altogether and fell back to the mirrors, and am currently pulling down the same ISO via ftp, and have been transferring for almost an hour wihtout any trouble.

I've read their ToS and understand the bandwidth throttling provisions, but I'm not coming anywhere near their limits - I usually get another 100 megs or so down (and maybe 10 or so up) before it gets shut off.

I hesitate to call support - guess I don't want to look like a crook, even though, given the circumstances, it would be hard not to appear that way. Is it normal for CableOne to disable BitTorrent access in a situation like this? If so, is it permanent?

Re: I need some CableOne help.

isn't fedora core a free thing? if so I would try finding a site that has it up for downloads rather than a torrent.. I know my friends used to have troubles with bittorrent shutting off their connection, but I've never had a problem.. I believe it's because of my Linksys BEFSR41 router... One of my friend's got a router too and I don't think he's having problems with it any more.. I believe it's just a flooding issue, It probably happens when you have too many connections to too many computers.

Wow, another reason I can hate this ISP

So beginning on Thursday, my speeds went to hell, I'm getting about 200-400 kbit/s... I call cableone, and they think It's my connection by itself, so I told them, "no it's not, because I also talked to a friend that is having the same problem." so then he makes me do a bunch of crap and make sure it's not my connection, which was useless, then he goes, "let me talk to my "Senior Advisor." He goes and does that for 5 minutes or so, then he comes back and tells me, "oh yes, we've been having some troubles, expect your regular speeds to be back in 2 business days. Excuse me? We're paying for about 1/10 or our speeds we're supposed to get, oh yeah, what happened about that saying on their commercials, "Watch us make you smile" hahahaha, what a joke, I'm certainly not smiling at the fact that my internet connection has been about 1/10 of what it should be in the PAST 4 FVCKING DAYS!... I think they need to get a clue about what they are doing, because if the act where dsl providers can provide through cable lines ever comes through, they won't be getting good business if they keep this crap up.

Re: Wow, another reason I can hate this ISP

Well, here I am... again.. Wednesday now, last call was Sunday, I just called them again, Same BS stuff, "oh yeah.. we have a problem we're trying to resolve with one of our providers." yeah.. like I'm buying that one, I'm sure a company the dishes out OC lines is messing up the pipelines that are providing CableOne *cough cough* anyways, again, the reply was, "wait a few more days, if it's not up by then, then call back here in a few days..." mmhmmm, I'm sure the next time I call is when I call to see if I should pay this month for all of their stupid mistakes.

Must be something local to you. I've been getting 3000 down / 300 up continuously since the implementation. No complaints here. I've called the support people a time or two and always thought they were fairly knowledgeable and helpful.

Have you talked with the GM of your local Cableone office?

Re: Wow, another reason I can hate this ISP

well, they say it's a "provider" problem.... anyways, just about anyone else I've talked to that lives in Idaho is having the exact same problem, and I'm not talking about in just one town... Have you tried a speed test lately?.. If not, I suggest you do and see what you turn up just to be sure, And usually no... I do not call the local office because it's some unknowledgable lady that probably doesn't even know what the difference between kilobits and kilobytes are, so I usually just go straight to tech support, but they did tell me it was a problem with their provider, so I don't see why It wouldn't be affecting you If you're routed through the same ISP.

speeds for N. Miss.

I just noticed that the advertised speeds for the $60/mo plan (if you don't have cable tv). has changed from 1000x200 to 3000x300. i noticed occasional d/l speeds speeds of 300KB/s a while back, but it still seems as though they are capping it at the old speeds. mostly in the past few days. right now for example i'm stuck at 120KB/s andi just ran a speed test that came in at 815.

before i counted my blessings when i got the higher speeds, but now that i'm actually pay for it i'm a little peved when i'm not getting it. (still paying more then i did when i had Bellsouth)

i'm curious what other users in the area have noticed.

Re: speeds for N. Miss.

you are paying for what you are getting, as stated in their EULA (End user liscense agreement) after you download 675 MB or upload about 60 MB, you will get capped for an hour. Trust me, I'm pissed to at their little scam games, all they do is try to advertise that speed as a market plan so people just like you will think they're going to get 300 KB/s, but after a while they find out it gets capped and get pissed.. You can only really hope an HONEST isp comes to your town, I'm hoping for the same here.

Need router setup help

I've got an elderly client who will be moving to Prescott AZ in the next 60 days. She's going to get CableONE broadband access. I want to put her behind a Linksys router so she has some protection. The plan is to set up her PC and router here in Calif so that hopefully she can just plug it in and be up and running once she gets the broadband installed.

So I need to know what sort of settings to use on the router and any other details unique to CableONE.

I presume they use a dynamic IP system but do I have to do anything like MAC cloning or hook the PC up first without the router?

Any help would be appreciated because I don't really want to go to AZ in the middle of summer for what would probably be a 30 min setup job.

Like to know what I'm getting into...

I'm going to be getting CableOne in Boise, ID in the next month or so (switching from Qwest DSL). Anyone have any opinions or advice one way or the other?

* re: cable modems- what kind does CableOne provide? Should I use that, or get my own?
* re: Support- do they seem knowledgable (read: BBR readers)?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: Like to know what I'm getting into...

I've have pretty good luck w/ CableOne over the last few years; Decent support, low down time, and quick speeds: 3000/300.

However, you'll always find folks like "nboy22" bashin' this ISP due to the "caps" that you'll get if you download/upload a lot. To me, this is only an issue if you're the type of person that feels the need to have an upload and/or download steam going 24/7. I never feel bothered to be capped at 1MEG (what cableone was at) for one hour if I should happen to cross the magic line.

Re: Like to know what I'm getting into...

I live in Meridian also, and have tried both Qwest and cableone, I kept cableone and immediately got rid of qwest. The service I'm getting so far is far superior to qwest. My ping times were a joke with qwest, and with cableone they are about as good as you can get with cable. I am very happy that they are as good as they are. With cable, in my experience can be very bad. No where near as good as it could be. You won't be dissapointed with cableone here. If you have any other specific questions you can PM me if youd like. I used cableones provided modem for a month or so, and it worked fine, I dont remember what it was, but I went and bought my own so I could save the 5 buck a month rental fee. They have a list of supported modems somewhere on their website. The support I've had to use a couple of times and they were helpful and seemed to know what they were doing Thank God

As for cablone, sure, they're the best thing in Idaho right now, but no, compared to tons of other ISPs, they're not good. So, your best bet is to go with CableOne, but don't be surprised if you find things out that you don't like.

Re: Like to know what I'm getting into...

I'm on the 1.5 mbit package, and I think the caps are still ridiculous.. the reason I can't look into qwest is because I've called them and I'm too far away, therefore I'm STUCK with cableone as a broadband choice unless I wanted to get a satellite, which I don't. Even with the 1.5 mbit package they should just keep that as a standard and leave it uncapped. It's plenty fast, and customers that are like me, would not look into switching to a different ISP.. So yes, I would go with a different ISP if I could, but I can't, unless I want dialup. Cableone is ok, but it still seems like they're lying to customers because they don't tell them up front when they sign up for the service, so basically they only increased their speeds so they could increase business, but at the same time, they're tricking their customers a bit because most customers would believe they are getting the actual non-capped connection, sure, they have their EULA, but most customers don't read those things. I think a more logical plan would've been to cap the connections at a planned time such as rush hour, then leave them uncapped for unlimited use in non-rush hour periods.

As soon as BellSouth tells me I am available for the FastAccess Extreme package I WILL be going to BellSouth.

I HATE Cable One, and there caps. Period. I run gaming servers and it requires me to upload/download lots of packages/files; including log files. I was downloading them faster on BellSouth's 1.5 Mb connection. (Time wise)

Cable One can have there bandwidth.

my thoughts exactly le roy... cableone should've just kept the caps off, they would've been looked at as a greater ISP in my eyes and a lot of other peoples if they just wouldn't cheat their customers out a bit. But, It's the only thing available in my area that's decently fast.. as soon as a dsl switch is placed near my house I will definately give dsl a try right away.

Only 1.5 mb?

Were you on CableOne when the speeds were 500kb and 1mb? This was back in April and guess what; the prices were the same. Now they increased their speeds 3 times and how much as the price increased??? Yep, you guessed, it... NOTHING!

So quit complaining about the free boost in speed.

Lerxst, I'm not complaining about the boost in speed, I'm complaining about the caps they put on it. and yes, I was on it with the 500k, but when downloading big things there isn't much difference cause of when you get capped it only equals out to be like 30 more KB/s than the 500 k package.

Service Area

Cable One service, from what I've seen, is very good - if you can get it. I live in/near Cleveland, MS and can literally see cable lines about 1/2 of a mile from my house, but Cable One will not run service to my area. I've contacted their office several times and get the same old "we're constantly expanding blah-de-blah" answer. There are no less than 30 households in my area (within 1 mile from their existing service) that I know for a fact would sign up with them if they would just expand their service to our neighborhood.

Well, after constantly trying to get more information from them, I finally got a response from their G.M. Yep, no plans for serving our area. After discussing it with him via e-mail, my opinion on them is that they are making enough money that they really just don't care to expand and offer service to more residents. I realize it costs money to expand services, but they could make that up easily in this area.

Sorry for the rant, but this situation really bugs me. Surely everyone can understand. And if anyone from Cable One reads this - EXPAND YOUR SERVICE AREA - you have a good service, why not pick up more customers?

If I'm out of line for posting my rant here, please let let me know.

Cableone + Online Gaming = Bad News

Allright, first off, I'm a gamer. I was on a local wireless 1 M connection for awhile and was just not satisfied with the speeds. With 3 computers online, there was just not enough bandwidth to go around. I ended up moving, picked up Cableone's 3MB service and am now the only box hooked up. I had used Cableone's 3MB before and was very satisfied. It's been 2 weeks now and I'm pissed The cap's are aggrivating at the very least for people who like to download large amounts of data. It's pure hell for hardcore gamers however. I stayed away from Qwest in the area due to the interleaving (+32ms on any ping for those that arn't familiar with it). Now I'm reconsidering. After some testing and some math, I came to the conclusion that at my current 3000/300 speeds with Cableone, and the current limitations, I can download at 95kBps and upload at 8.5kBps, yes, that's right, 8.5kBps, constantly without hitting my limitations. Wait though, if I do hit that cap, then I still get a good 120kBps down and 35kBps up... so why bother limiting my downloads to slower than the cap? Oh well. I'll deal with the cap while I'm downloading... now what if I go play some Halo2 online? Well, for the first while, everything goes great. Suddenly, there's lag everywhere, I can't find a decent server. Suddenly it hits me! The cap! I must have my downloads going. But no, no downloads, no activity on the computer at all. I do some more checking and come to find out that through XLink Kai (a free alternative to Xbox-live, check it out!), Halo2 uses 13kBps upload constantly with 1 player. So after 2 hours of Halo playing, I'm done. No more. This may be allright for some people... but once I'm on a roll, I keep right on going... until a lag glitch tosses me off the sides in Lockout. Then I'm pissed. I called Cableone... let them have a few choice words, and asked if there was anything I could do... I even suggested that maybe I'd upgrade to a business account if it would get rid of the caps. They advised me that no... the caps exist even on the business accounts. Now if I was a business with Cableone... I know that announcement would have driven me elsewhere instantly. After some more tests and some playing around, I've given up. I see that Microserv offers a 1500/1500 wireless in my area... I don't like wireless but I can't argue with that kind of upload speed. If anyone has any experience with them, I'd love to hear about it. I know they're expensive, but so is what I'm paying Cableone for nothing but a runaround. If anyone else is really interested, this link ( »www.sandvine.com/news/pr ··· sp?ID=65 ) will take you to a great article specifically on the effect of Halo2 on Broadband Providers. I think Cableone had better listen up before it's too late and they go the way of Prodigy and Compuserv before them.

GRRR Cable one sure ticks me off

For the past 2 weeks my internet connection has been like a roller coaster ride. Just about every day it would go down for anywhere from 1 hour to 9 hours. Yesterday(12/23) at 1AM CST it went down and did not come back up until today(12/24)at 6pm CST. There tech support could never give me a rough time frame when it would be back up.

Apparently the local office had gotten allot of complaints cause I decided to call them and the phone was very very busy all day long. If there is any Cable one tech guys that read this board here is a little advice. Tell us what went wrong instead of saying "well we are working on it".

They had been good the whole year and then they all the sudden they started to have problems. It really looks like that someone is either not taking care of the equipment by doing Preventive maintenance on it or they unplug something they were not suppose to. Oh and the connection is acting kinda slow right now too.

End of Rant.

Speed Cap?

I have read several of the posts on this forum, have come to the conclusion that cableone has some kind of speed cap for it's users. I am a cableone user, and do not have this problem however. I am on a 1500/200 plan (29.95), and everytime I use my connection, I get approximately 1500/200 speeds. I frequently download large data files, and use bittorrent more often than is reasonable, but I do not seem to have a problem with this speed cap. Could anyone explain to me what this cap is all about? By the way, I'm from Emporia, Kansas

Cable Deals

Hey all, I'm from Fargo, ND (going to school in Rochester, NY) and I will be spending the summer and fall in Boise working at Micron.

I'm wondering what the best internet deals in Boise are (unfortunately, it's looking like I'll be stuck with Cableone just like I was in Fargo...).

If Cableone, what's the best approach to getting cheap internet or free periods? Since I'm only going to be spending 6 months there, think I can get them to give me 3 or 6 months free service by saying I'm going to go with DSL (or something else) instead?

Thanks!

are these fvckers ever gonna increase speeds?

i've had the 3mb package since january 2004, been a subscriber since oct. 2003. other broadband providers are increasing speeds every 6 months it seems. is c-1 ever gonna step up and give it's "loyal " customers a speed increase?
