Re: Anything affecting Putnam?

Odog posted that Plainfield was having problems and while I do not claim to know the full layout of the system there seems to be two major hubs myrock and plainfield. In fact when they rolled out @Home we in Plainfield and north were on the second half of the roll out.

So I would think Plainfields problem is Putnams problem.

Plainfield work

I'm going to light another link to Plainfield. This should completely alleviate the congestion and latency.

Should cause a small ~30 second outage this afternoon.

not even 30 seconds... maybe 10 seconds at most.

latency should be complete gone, sub 10ms to our edge.

Outages

Hello all,

This is my first post here. I have been loosing my connection very frequently for the last three weeks. I have tried calling the customer service number three times, but to no avail I am still having the same problem. I live in Wauregan and have had cable internet for just about five years now. I never used to have any problems until recently. I was told about a week ago by a tech named Eric that there was problems with some wires running from Rte 12 into town and that it was being worked on. Nothing improved and Thursday I called and talked with a tech named JJ and he said Nothing was wrong with my connection and I needed to have a tech come to my house. The earliest appointment I could get is Sep. 8th. I know of two other customers in town that I had convinced to get your service that are having the same problems. I don't see how this could be something with my hardware . I am hoping that one of you guy could shed some light on the situation for me. I am including my modem log from this morning in hopes it contains a clue. It has been very strange lately.

Question about the Metrocast buyout...

For those of us that don't have an HD Tv yet, I have not seen anything that would benefit me with the buyout. I have seen lower internet packages, which conerns me. The max internet speeds are 4/384 where we are 6/512 now.

Anyone?

Re: Question about the Metrocast buyout...

We are all looking at it and waiting to see. If they keep me where I am full speed 6 down I will stay but DSL rated at 6 down that will yield about 5 at my house for 40% of what I am paying now might be my choice. If things do change.

Where you live I would bet you could do as well.

I am planning on it if they try to drop the speeds. I was looking at the Digital cable channel list and I don't seem like I would really be picking anything great up, or any major changes.

Plus the reviews here are downright horrible for Metrocast.

Ultra not going anywhere.

I will also be updating the pricing sheet here, to reflect the new changes being made.

Residential packages will be

Acesss 128/64 $21.95 + $2.50(modem insurance, or BYOModem)

Internet 4000/384 $39.95 modem incluced
Ultra 6000/512 $57.95 modem included

Anyone currently subscribing to the "standard" or "ultra" gets free modem replacement as long as they are subscribed. It does not matter if you bought it retail or not. If the modem dies and you are subscribed to those packages we replace the modem.

The current 3000/256 static package, the 6000/512 static package and the two 6000/512 static "server" packages will no longer be offered. Legacy people will be left alone for the time being.

Packages should go live tomorrow.

As for the price increase on the Standard package, that package is also being increased by 1mbit down and 128 up.. I am sure that more then makes up for the $2

I am unsure on the $10 non-video charge, but I believe it is staying as-is. Odog can say for sure.

Modem replacements are only as required. You cant just come in say I want a new modem, and have at it.

For customers with Ultra (6mb package) and a Surfboard 3100 they should have already had their modems replaced at or just after their upgrade.

If you do not have Ultra (the only one that will not go fullspeed on a 3100), and your modem is functioning, then you would not be elegable for a modem replacement.

For now, self subscription is still in place, this may change in the future.

Re: Ultra not going anywhere.

I didn't know if the 3100 was capable of the supposed increase to 4 meg down, hence my question of whether their was any advantage to upgrading...wasn't just looking for a free modem. But it's nice to know I'll get one if mine dies.

Re: Ultra not going anywhere.

The Surfboard 3100 is capable of transfering approximately 5mbit per second (due to the 10Bast Half-Duplex port on the back), so it will not have an issue with the 4mb package, however you would only get ~5mbit on the ultra package.

New Metrocast plans

Looking at the new Metrocast page for former Eastern customers, it appears there are 2 problems with the new plans:

1. The $39.95 (for 4.0MB/384kB) does not appear to include the $2.95 "equipment and maintenance fee", so the total would be $42.90/month. True or not true?

2. The prices all say "w/ Expanded Basic Cable Service or Higher". YIKES. A customer who currently has limited basic will have to fork out an ADDITIONAL $30+ a month for that!

DSL anyone?

why is email addy changing ?

That's a bummer. I will have to change my email on a hundred or so sites. I will also have to retrain all my contacts.

I knew I should have started with Yahoo mail when @HOME stiffed us.

What is the downside in Metrocast maintaining both the new and old addresses forever ? Eventually all would be metrocast (when we are dead or moved-on).

I have noticed that nyc.speakeasy.net has been less and less accurate (probably due to its popularity and subsequent load)

Try downloading a file from someplace like microsoft.com, and see how fast it goes. It should be in the 400KB/s range.

Some Channels Blocky?

Over the weekend, quite a few of my cable channels have been coming in blocky (you know, the kind you see with a bad DVD or a stuttering webcast). The problem has been coming and going, and is most noticable on the expanded basic channels such as Nick, Disney, Spike, etc. Right now the problem is getting pretty bad as every other second there seems to be block artifacts all over the screen. Tried both TVs in the house and got the same problem (no converter boxes on either).

On a side, if/when can we expect to see Comedy Central, SciFi, and other channels added to the Expanded Basic... or was this the The Day getting it wrong again (I noticed they also mentioned Cartoon Network as a channel not available currently on EB, strange... I get it).

We purposly do not offer different selections during Self Subscription due to the fact that many people will select a different package, then wonder why their bill is so high, or their internet is so "slow".

We use the "one size fits all" package, and if people which to change from that, they will need to go thru the "effort" of calling in to change it.

MyEastern vs Metrocast

well its comforting to see two techs from myeastern still here. having researched Metrocast here when i first heard about the changeover i ALMOST ordered DSL but if MetroCast CT remains as good as myeastern has been for the last 4 yrs
then i'll be happy to stick around.

OT are there plans to offer free DVR upgrade to current myeastern subscribers

Re: MyEastern vs Metrocast

Just curious why is it that you would expect a Free DVR?

Direct tv and satellite customers always say how overpriced cable is and rates keep going up
well a free dvr would shut people up

I dont expect it i was merely suggesting a promotion like order/keep digital cable and high speed = get a free dvr upgrade so people wont start flocking over to satellite

Re: MyEastern vs Metrocast

Huh Ok got ya. Well Being returned from Direct in early March if you wanna here a horror story shoot me a PM but to save you the details. HD DVR which at the time no locals they wanted $499 plus the $5 a month deal and I don't own the thing. Now granted I do not own the DVR I have now from Metrocast however no contract and no $499 up front. I guess what I am saying is I don't think that there is much pressure from the Dish companies.

The DVR is actually "free" now, and really always has since you dont have to buy it.

There is an equipment maintenance fee which is slightly higher for the DVR box then it is for the normal digital box. (I dont have the prices handy, but I am sure that O will chime in at some point with them)

For the internet service, every single person behind the myeastern.com internet service has been retained with Metrocast (less a few people who retired at about the same time)

port restrictions

With the dawn of the Metrocast age have there come any port restrictions? I can no longer SSH into a computer I maintain for a local school.

Re: port restrictions

Yes, For all residential packages, SSH, Telnet, and FTP servers are now blocked on their default ports.

This only affects servers, not outgoing connections.

Newsgroup Access?

Is what we have with myeastern.com gonna change or stay the same or be eliminated altogether?

Re: Newsgroup Access?

So far, it has not changed. The server name may change at some point, but as far as I understand it will continue to be the same service we have had for the last few years.

TV guide

In the old myeastern.com website there used to be a handy dandy tv guide link - I can't seem to find it in the metrocast website. I went to tvguide.com and put in my zip code and it says this page has been either moved or removed.
