| | Online Backup Service I have been thinking about backing up to a cloud service. Anyone have any recommendations ? Pros & cons of the service you use ? Any help in picking one would be greatly appreciated.

You set everything up and it runs fine for a while and than you get errors that tell you to try again later and ultimately the solution is to delete everything and start over.
A backup is worst than useless if you cannot count on it when you need it. Any backup service should allow you to save a disc image as well as back up files in my opinion.
I ultimately gave up and bought a large USB 3.0 flash drive and back up often. It is much cheaper and more reliable. If you positively can't lose data alternate between two of them and keep the one you are not using in a remote place like your car or a safe deposit box.
Just one man's opinion.

| billh491 join:2001-08-09 Pomfret Center, CT | Chick do you get that backup out of your house? What good is a backup if your house burns floods or the thief spy's that nice drive to go along with the computer.
If you want a simple drop dead why to back up your files I think it would be Carbonite. The only thing I would do is take a very close look at the fact they do not backup .exe files or movies unless you take action to back them up. The default is for it to backup docs photos and music. I put my kids laptop on that as I do not have worry about it.
I will not use Carbonite as I am fussy about my computer and hate the red green or yellow buttons on my files icons. I know I am a bits nuts.
Here is what I do (note I run Windows 8 and Office 2013)First I have an SSD boot drive and a large spinning disc for large files. So I use the win7/win8 full image backup that is built in to windows and free. (I used it when I changed to a larger SSD it worked flawlessly BTW)
Then I use the built in windows backup program to back up my new or changed files from the ssd to the spinning drive every night at 7pm.
Then once a month I back up all the files in my user folder and public user folder to a hard drive that I bring to work I also put the files in a folder on the spinning drive. I have a removable drive bay so in fact two drives for it as such one is always at work the other home.
Then if that is not enough I am grandfathered in to a free 25 gig skydrive for free so I installed the desktop app for skydrive in Win8 and it syncs what ever you put in those folders to the cloud. So I have moved all my files to the local skydrive folder. Office 2013 integrates with skydrive.
So let me see I have my files on my ssd drive, in the cloud on skydrive and backed up every nite to my spinning disk. So three copies of every file safe every night at 7pm. Then depending on the time of the month I have copies my files on three spinning drives two in my computer and one at work that are between 1 day and 30 days old.
Wow that's nuts now you see why I tell normal people to use Carbonite.

| | Chick join:2000-12-27 Waterford, CT | Re: Online Backup Service Bill, Looks like we run similar systems and backup practices. I love the SSD boot drive it extended the life of my main box by at least a year. Sorry I forgot to mention Skydrive.
I take the view that it is not if a hard drive will fail but when, which is why I place a high value on back up disc images which I do twice a month in addition to file back ups once a week. Since I retired my files do not change as drastically as they once did. I totally agree that Windows built in backup is the way to go.
I keep a complete backup off site and one in the house.

| billh491 join:2001-08-09 Pomfret Center, CT | Full image backups are awesome I forgot to mention I update mine monthly as well. But while they are good for fast restores If something happened I am not adverse to doing a nice clean install either. | |
|
| | | It really bailed me out twice. Once when I had a drive crash and, even more important, when a bunch of documents went bye-bye due to a misunderstanding. I did have a local backup, but it was not 100% up-to-date.
I did verify with MC that exceeding the nominal monthly data cap would not be a problem (I was restoring a ton of stuff). There was no problem.

| | Modem Upgrade I had my modem upgraded to a Docsis 3.0 today by a metrocast tech, and my upload seems to slacking a bit. Prior to the upgrade I was averaging about a 2.3-2.4 mbp/s up speed.
As seen above I am now averaging about 1.9 mbp/s. It's not really a huge deal, just a little strange seeing as it is an improved modem.

I'm using the same computer as before the upgrade, I'm plugged directly into the modem, anything that may be using bandwidth is disabled including my antivirus. Ive tried serveral different speedtest sites and nearby servers all of which seem to get around the same result and the modem has been reset several times.
Anyone know why this might be happening?

| | 35 Mbps package not delivering what's promised
Now before I start, I know that the packages have the words "up to" before the amount displayed and that more often than not, you won't get exactly what is promised all the time. However... Only recently (within the last few weeks) I've been experiencing SIGNIFICANT losses in DL speed. When I say significant, I mean I am only getting 0.5 to 5 Mbps DL at best during random times throughout the day. Half the time I get around 16-22 Mbps (I've done tests through speedtest.net and the metrocast speed test) and the other half the time I am getting the 0.5 Mbps to 5 or 7 Mbps. Now this has been very frequent lately (2 times a day or so) and lasting upwards of 1 to 4 hours at a time. What gives? Has anyone else experienced this? Like I said, it's never happened before a couple weeks ago and now all of the sudden I will randomly throughout the day get drops down to 1/32 of what I'm promised. What is causing this? I have not changed any of my settings on my router. It's all the same as it has been since set up. Could I get any fixes/advice? I have already tried the unplug, wait 10 min, plug back in methods multiple times each time it drops and 9/10 times it does absolutely nothing. Also, the router is only a year or so old and is one of the expensive models at the time (Linksys E2000) and all of my wireless technology is running wireless N. So my hardware is not the cause of this (90% positive). Any help?

| | Unhappy customer I've had Metrocast for over a year now in the Philadelphia, MS area and have had 10mbps down and 1mbps up. About 3 months ago I noticed the speed jumped up to 25mbps with 2 upload. For the past month I had issues with my speed being at 1mbps to 3mbps at around 3am which is a non peak time. I called customer service about 4 times which at one point they recommended I get a DOCSIS 3 modem which I had to purchase myself since they didn't have any at the local office. They then said they were going to send a tech out to check the line. The tech never came but called and just told me that they didn't offer 25mbps in my area. Kinda weird since that was the speed I was showing when I ran a speedtest through several different servers. At the beginning of this month I noticed my download speed went from 25mbps to around 10mbps. I figured it was an issue like I was having before, but I decided to call them anyways. I was told by the rep that they only offer 9mbps in my area which I find pretty weird because when I signed up I was told I'd have 10mbps. Also it's weird considering I had 25mbps for a few months, I mean were they just testing the speed out and found an error on their lines or something? Least they can do is let me know if they are going to be doing this, then I wouldn't be upset with the service. So far this month though at least my speed is constant so that's a plus. I just wish there was another ISP in my area that I could go to, but I guess I'm stuck with this for now. | |

These men are good men, who put their heart and soul going up the poles, going into houses of not very happy people. They know all too well about how Shit roles down hill, and they take it, without incident. Some of these men have been there, a long time. They did not deserve to be treated like this at all. This company is nothing without its workers, and doing what they did, maybe hopefully one of these men, who are now worried about their mortgages, and other such living expenses can drive the Karma bus and be able to laugh at this some day!! My connection is usually great during the day, but the last couple of weeks it has been slowing to a crawl in the evening.
I wish there were more options for service in this area, but I am currently stuck using Metrocast.

| | Fox News Anyone hear chatter that MC may drop Fox News ?
I don't want to start any rumors, because I have no knowledge about MC intentions.
I would hate to have to switch providers. It's a pain in the butt to change emails and sell my DVR.

| | | Re: Fox News Where did you hear that? I cannot believe that is even possible with the way that broadcasters package their channels together.. | |

Just for the heck of it, I did a google on this subject, and aside from this posting found nothing. So I would say that it's just a rumor. Dropping Fox News would be a pretty stupid move on Metrocast's part, especially with Satellite & now U-Verse really turning up the heat on them.

| | buying my own hd/dvr converter I have a dch 6416 that I'm, renting from metrocast, I'd like to buy my own, and have seen a couple of dch3416's on ebay but need to know what the difference is?? I've read that the 3416 only has a digital tuner. Since all signals are supposed to be digital now, what's the diff??, I get digital cable from my company so shouldn't that be enough?? Regards, Rich | |
